The name 秀味亭 (pronounced 'Sumijeong' in Korean) combines 秀 (su, meaning 'excellent'), 味 (mi, meaning 'taste'), and 亭 (jeong, meaning 'pavilion'). Essentially, an 'Excellent Flavor Pavilion!'

2. Ambiance & How to Order

Inside, K-pop music played softly, creating a familiar atmosphere. There were a few other patrons, many of whom seemed to be Korean-Chinese, and it was comforting to hear them chatting in Korean.

Both the staff and the owner spoke fluent Korean, making ordering and communication incredibly easy and comfortable.

Ordering is convenient via a QR code at each table, and the menu boasts a wide array of Korean dishes.
From hearty soups like Sundaegukbap and Somori Gukbap to popular side dishes (anju) like Jeyuk Bokkeum (spicy stir-fried pork) and Hwangtae Gui/Muchim (grilled/seasoned dried pollock), plus a selection of beers, it felt more like a cozy Korean pub (pocha) than just a restaurant.

I ordered three dishes: Sundaegukbap for ~$5, Sundubu Jjigae for ~$6, and Haemul Pajeon for ~$5. The prices felt very reasonable.
3. My Dish Reviews
⭐[Sundaegukbap (Blood Sausage Soup)] |

Let's start with the Sundaegukbap. It arrived, and I was pleased to see a full array of condiments on the table: gochujang paste (dadaegi), salted shrimp (saeujeot), black pepper, salt, and perilla seed powder. This allowed me to customize the flavor to my liking.

Instead of various pork offals, this Sundaegukbap featured pork liver. The sundae itself was distinct; it was a glutinous rice-based Chinese-style blood sausage, rather than the more common Korean glass noodle-filled variety, offering a unique texture.

The broth itself was savory and clean, free from any strong gamey flavors or overpowering spices. However, adding the gochujang paste instantly brought a delightful kick and umami depth, transforming it into a spicy and robust Sundaeguk.

The side dishes included kimchi, which had a distinct local Chinese flavor, and kkakdugi (diced radish kimchi), which was perfectly seasoned. The young radish kimchi (yeolmu kimchi), however, tasted a bit too salty from the salted shrimp.
⭐[Sundubu Jjigae (Soft Tofu Stew)] |

The Sundubu Jjigae was ~$6.
The stew had a rich, savory broth with a thick consistency. The gochujang (Korean chili paste) base was prominent, making it taste more like a spicy gochujang jjigae than a typical Sundubu Jjigae.

Interestingly, the distinct aroma of chili oil, often found in Sundubu Jjigae, was barely present.
It contained no seafood, focusing instead on soft tofu, mushrooms, and an egg. This made it a great choice if you prefer a simpler, lighter stew without the strong seafood flavor.
⭐[Haemul Pajeon (Seafood Pancake)] |

Finally, the Haemul Pajeon (seafood pancake) came in at ~$5.
The batter was made with buckwheat flour instead of the usual wheat flour, and the seafood consisted of squid and imitation crab meat.

The green onions were sliced diagonally, giving it a different character from the Haemul Pajeon commonly found in Korea. Despite these differences, its chewy texture made it surprisingly addictive.
After trying all three dishes, I left with the impression that Sumijeong is definitely a noteworthy spot.

I also ordered some Soju and Makgeolli (Korean alcoholic beverages) to accompany the meal, and they paired perfectly as drinking snacks.
4. Who Will Love Sumijeong?

The Sundaegukbap broth is clean and mild, making it very approachable.
