Strahov Monastery Prague 2026: Library Hall Tickets & Visit Review

After enjoying brunch at Café Savoy, our first sightseeing stop of the day was the Strahov Monastery. I went there with high expectations, as it's famous for photos of its library halls, but it turned out to be a little different from what I imagined once we explored it.

After our monastery visit, we headed to Prague Castle.

1. Location and How to Get There

Strahov Monastery is nestled on a hill in the Hradčany district, where Prague Castle is also located.

If you're taking the tram, hop on line 22 or 23 and get off at the Pohořelec stop.

From the tram stop to the main entrance of the monastery, it's about 200m, a pleasant 5-minute walk.

It’s a great spot to combine with a visit to Prague Castle, but we chose to explore the monastery first before heading towards Prague Castle.

The reason is simple: the monastery is situated higher up on the hill than Prague Castle.

Walking downhill is always a bit easier, isn't it? Uphill can feel much more challenging!

Especially in summer, climbing a hill can get you quite warm, so I highly recommend you start with the monastery and then make your way down to Prague Castle!

There’s a sloping section between the two sites, so it's a good idea to allow plenty of time for your walk.

As you approach the entrance, you’ll first notice the main gate with its pale pink exterior walls and Latin inscription, offering a serene contrast to the more opulent gates of Prague Castle.

2. Ticket Office & Types of Tickets

Circuit 1: Library, Cabinet of Curiosities, Gallery, Monastery

Circuit 2: Library, Cabinet of Curiosities

Opening Hours: 9 AM - 5 PM

Looking at the price list on the ticket office window, the circuits were more detailed than I expected.

Circuit I includes the Library, Cabinet of Curiosities, Gallery, and the Monastery itself, priced at 390 Kč for adults.

Circuit II is a route that only covers the Library and the Cabinet of Curiosities, costing 220 Kč.

We opted for Circuit II, purchasing two adult tickets for the Library (Knihovna/Library), which came to a total of 440 Kč.

During our visit, the opening hours were from 9 AM to 5 PM, and the sign indicated that the last entry for Circuit I was 4:15 PM and for Circuit II was 4:30 PM.

Next to the same sign, there was also a separate ticket for Gallery Miro, which included a contemporary art exhibition and a glass of wine for 100 Kč.

Due to time constraints, we only visited the library circuit.

Upon receiving our tickets, we noticed a small print on the back indicating a 10% discount at the monastery's attached restaurant.

3. The Library Halls: An Unexpected Disappointment

Here's one thing I didn't know beforehand.

It was that standard library admission tickets do not include entry inside the Theological Hall and Philosophical Hall.

To protect the ancient books, frescoes, and furniture from humidity changes and dust, general visitors are guided along the corridor and can only view both halls from the open doorways.

I had expected to see the magnificent bookshelves and frescoed ceilings that I often saw in photos from inside the halls, but instead, I had to take them in only from the doorways.

Even from the doorway, the sight was utterly captivating.

The golden bookshelves stretched seemingly endlessly, and the frescoed ceilings, filled with intricate art, looked as if they opened up to the heavens.

4. The Monastery Courtyard and Brewery Bistro

After finishing your visit, a spacious courtyard unfolds before you.

The white-walled buildings enclosing the square courtyard created a fantastic photo spot, and a few cars parked in one corner gave the impression that this wasn't just a tourist attraction, but a living, working space.

As we walked across the courtyard, a sign for a beer garden and bistro caught my eye, emblazoned with "Sv. Norbert."

Strahov Brewery is a place within the monastery complex that sells beer and food, and the sign there also listed craft beers, bottled beers, and even takeout options.

Unfortunately, due to our schedule, we didn't get to experience it.

If I ever visit again, I'd love to unwind with a beer here after exploring the monastery.

5. Visitor Tips

Near the entrance, there's a large rack filled with tourist information brochures, not just for Prague but also for various smaller towns across the Czech Republic.

There was also a brochure for the Strahov Monastery's own Treasury, which we didn't have time to explore this visit, but I'll definitely check it out next time.

The day we visited was a Saturday,

and as luck would have it, there was a wedding taking place in the monastery's church.

Seeing guests dressed in suits and gowns gathered at the church entrance made me truly realize that this is still a vibrant, active space where ceremonies are held today.

It was an unexpected sight during our visit, and I think it will stay with me for a long time.

The wedding was a special occasion that day and didn't significantly overlap with our tour path, but we made sure to pass by quietly to avoid disturbing the ceremony.

Even on the walk from the monastery to our next destination, Prague Castle, there were sights to behold.

As we strolled down a sloping alley, I suddenly turned around and discovered a viewpoint that offered a breathtaking panorama of the Prague city center we had just passed, along with the spires of St. Vitus Cathedral.

The scenery during this short walk was just as memorable as the monastery visit itself.

Travel Tip

With a standard library ticket, you cannot enter the Theological Hall and Philosophical Hall; you can only view them from the open doorways.

Tours that include entry inside the halls are pre-booked, guided tours with limited capacity, so if you really want to step inside, be sure to check the official website for availability and conditions before your visit.

The official recommended duration for a standard library visit is approximately 40 minutes.

If you have some extra time near Prague Castle, it's a wonderful idea to combine a stroll through the courtyard and a visit to the brewery as part of your Strahov Monastery itinerary.
