Strahov Monastery.
It's a great spot to take a tram up to and then walk to Prague Castle.
I'll cover the library entrance fee, how to visit, and the recommended route for you.

How to Get There by Tram |
Strahov Monastery is situated on a hill, so it's much more convenient to take a tram up rather than walking from the Old Town.

Take tram number 22 or 23, get off at the Pohořelec stop, and it's about a 5-minute walk.

And if you're planning to visit Strahov Monastery, I recommend taking the tram up and then walking down towards Prague Castle after your visit.
Moving in the sequence of Old Town → Tram → Strahov Monastery → Prague Castle will help you avoid climbing the same hill twice.

What to See: Library, Church, and Brewery |
Strahov Monastery is more than just an old monastery building; it's a place where diverse attractions converge, including a library, a church, and a brewery.

Strahov Monastery: Nearly 900 Years of History
Strahov Monastery dates back to 1143. It has undergone numerous wars, fires, and reconstructions, and today, monks still live and work within its walls.

The most famous highlight is the Strahov Library.
When you search for Strahov Monastery,
the images you'll most often encounter are of its magnificent library.
Here, ancient bookshelves beautifully blend with breathtaking ceiling frescoes,
making it a popular spot for those who seek not only books
but also dazzling spaces and stunning architecture.

The most iconic areas are
the Theological Hall, dating back to the 17th century,
and the Philosophical Hall, from the 18th century.
The Basilica and Strahov Brewery
Upon arriving at the monastery, I first explored the basilica.
Afterward, I made my way to
the Strahov Brewery, conveniently located within the monastery grounds.

Strahov boasts
a brewing tradition that dates back centuries,
and even today, you can enjoy handcrafted beer right within the monastery walls.

| An Itinerary to Combine with Prague Castle |
Strahov Monastery
is ideally situated to be paired with a visit to Prague Castle.

After exploring the monastery, a downhill walk towards Prague Castle will lead you
through the charming Hradčany district,
directly to the castle itself.

| Minnie's Planning Pointers |
1. Best Time to Fit into Your Schedule |
Visiting Strahov Monastery in the morning
and then heading down to Prague Castle in the afternoon
offers an excellent flow for your itinerary.
If you opt for a half-day Prague Castle tour,
remember that tours usually start at 9 AM or 2 PM,
so you can easily align your other plans around it.
2. Recommended Time Allowance |
For a general visit to the library, budget about 1 hour.
If you plan for a comprehensive visit or a leisurely stroll around the area,
consider 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours.
And if you're planning to enjoy a meal or a refreshing beer at the brewery,
it's a good idea to set aside extra time for potential waits.

3. Efficient Route for Getting Around |
Old Town → Tram → Strahov Monastery → Prague Castle
By moving in this order,
you can minimize walking uphill again, making your journey much smoother.
| Overall Verdict |
Strahov Monastery is definitely a place worth adding to your itinerary
if you're keen to witness a truly magnificent library
or wish to combine another remarkable spot with your Prague Castle visit.
The unique charm of Strahov lies in the fact that you can experience a monastery, library, basilica, and brewery
all within one captivating location,
setting it apart from other Prague attractions.
If you're eager to explore the interior of Prague Castle
with in-depth historical explanations, a half-day guided tour is an excellent choice.
But if you prefer to wander freely without a strict timetable,
yet still desire detailed insights into the sights, an audio guide might be more your style.
Be sure to compare them to find what perfectly complements your travel preferences!
