During my trips to Prague, Czech Republic, Charles Bridge was easily the place I visited most often.

By day, it buzzes with the vibrant, unique energy of Europe, filled with street performers and vendors. As night falls, Prague Castle twinkles in the distance, transforming the bridge into an incredibly famous and picturesque photo spot.

Construction on Charles Bridge began in 1357 under the reign of King Charles IV. It's a vital link connecting the Old Town with the Prague Castle district.

In medieval times, kings would cross this very bridge during their coronation ceremonies to enter the castle. It also served as a busy thoroughfare for various modes of transport, collecting tolls along the way.

Today, it's exclusively a pedestrian bridge, a beloved pathway for both tourists and locals.

Location & Accessibility

You'll naturally find yourself crossing the Charles Bridge as you descend from Prague Castle into the city center.

Serving as the main connection between the Old Town and Malá Strana (Lesser Town), you'll likely traverse it multiple times during your Prague explorations.

This means you can effortlessly experience its charm in the morning, afternoon, and at night, without making a special detour.

Bridge Tower Viewpoint

As you begin crossing Charles Bridge from the Old Town side, you'll encounter the Old Town Bridge Tower, which operates as a stunning viewpoint. There's an admission fee, typically around ~$8.

Climbing the internal staircase of the tower rewards you with a panoramic view encompassing the Old Town, Charles Bridge, the Vltava River, and Prague Castle.

While I didn't go up myself, if you appreciate cityscapes from above, the view is absolutely gorgeous and well worth the small entrance fee.

Popular photo opportunities include capturing the tower itself, or posing on the bridge or at its entrance with Prague Castle as your majestic backdrop.

Legendary Statues

Among the many statues gracing Charles Bridge, the **Statue of St. John of Nepomuk** is undoubtedly the most famous.

If you look closely at the photo, you'll see a particularly shiny, worn-down section. Legend has it that if you touch this spot, close your eyes, and rub it with your right hand while making a wish, **your wish will come true**.

Beyond St. John, you'll encounter a diverse collection of sculptures as you cross, including statues depicting Jesus and King Charles IV, the very monarch who initiated the bridge's construction.

Prague's Enchanting Night Views

Experiencing Charles Bridge at night is an absolute must-do on any Prague itinerary.

While it varies by season, if you venture out around 9 PM, you'll be greeted by the sparkling Prague Castle and its illuminated towers, standing out even more brilliantly against the darkened sky.

Even after sunset, the bridge is bustling with tourists eager to capture its beauty. Prague is known for being one of the safer European cities, and with plenty of people around, you can feel secure exploring at night.

You'll also notice countless 'love locks' adorning the iron railings, left by visitors from all over the world. Taking a photo here with Prague Castle in the background is another popular photo op!

While it only takes about 10 minutes to cross the bridge, understanding its rich history and symbolic meaning truly transforms the experience.
