Among the many fantastic eateries in Songdo 8-Gonggu, Maragongbang is hands down our family’s favorite. We first discovered this gem through a promotional event, and since then, our kids have fallen head over heels for it, making us regulars. This time, we decided to switch things up and ordered the Malaxiangguo.
Honestly, it was our first time ordering Malaxiangguo at a Maratang restaurant; we usually just make it at home with store-bought sauce.
Outside & Inside

Maragongbang: Why We Keep Coming Back to This Songdo 8-Gonggu Maratang Spot
We’ve explored several Maratang restaurants in Songdo 8-Gonggu, but Maragongbang keeps drawing us back for a few key reasons. From our very first visit, we were impressed by how mild the flavor was, making it incredibly approachable for Maratang newcomers.
Our eldest, who is quite sensitive to strong flavors, usually takes a few bites at other Maratang places and then stops. But here, they genuinely enjoy the broth and eat it all up!
Because the mala spice isn't overpowering, it’s a top recommendation for families looking for a Maratang restaurant in Songdo 8-Gonggu. The owner is also incredibly kind, always smiling and speaking gently to the children, which makes dining here even more comfortable for families.

Maragongbang Songdo 8-Gonggu Boasts a DIY Sauce Bar
When choosing a Maratang restaurant in Songdo 8-Gonggu, the presence of a sauce bar is surprisingly important. Maragongbang stands out because it has a dedicated sauce bar where you can create your own custom dipping sauces.
You can mix peanut sauce, chili powder, oyster sauce, sugar, minced garlic, and Szechuan peppercorn oil in your preferred ratios. Our kids absolutely love the fun of combining their own sauces! Many Maratang places only offer sesame sauce, so having a full sauce bar truly makes Maragongbang our preferred choice over other Songdo 8-Gonggu Maratang spots.

Our Order This Visit
Maratang
Malaxiangguo

We usually stick to level 1 for our Maratang, which is their mildest option. Sometimes, we venture into level 1.5, which is also quite manageable.
For the Malaxiangguo, we were told that even level 1 is spicier than Maratang, so we ordered that. It definitely packed more heat, feeling like it was somewhere between a level 1.5 and 2 Maratang!

This Time at Maragongbang Songdo 8-Gonggu: It’s All About the Malaxiangguo!
As I mentioned, this was our first time ordering Malaxiangguo at a Maratang spot. We typically prepare it at home using pre-made sauces, so it was a real treat to finally enjoy it properly at a restaurant.
Malaxiangguo uses similar ingredients to Maratang, but it’s a stir-fry dish without broth. Initially, I confidently ordered just the Malaxiangguo, but after a few bites, I quickly understood why rice is an absolute must-have! The seasoning is quite strong. Without the broth to mellow it out, the rich sauce thoroughly coats every ingredient, making it a bit too salty to eat on its own.

I'm currently (somewhat) on a diet, so I mostly skipped the noodles and filled my bowl with vegetables, shrimp balls, tofu skin noodles, and meat. I imagine adding noodles would help balance the intense seasoning a bit more.

The Meat is Richly Flavored and Delicious!
While the strong seasoning might sound like a drawback, it's actually the charm of Malaxiangguo.
The meat is deeply infused with the sauce, delivering a burst of savory umami with every bite. Paired with rice, the seasoning is just perfect, making it a hearty and satisfying meal. My second child absolutely loved the meat, saying it was delicious!
I once over-ordered Maratang, getting 3.5 pounds (1,600 grams), and it was way too much. I regretted not getting a half-and-half Maratang/Malaxiangguo option then, but this time, I finally got to fully enjoy the Malaxiangguo. Next time, I plan to try the half-and-half option. My second child loved the meat the most!
And the Maratang? No words needed, it's always fantastic!
