When traveling with children
to Ganghwado Island,
I definitely recommend the Sochang Experience Center!
Here, you can try stamping your own Sochang handkerchief,
and even experience wearing a Hanbok (traditional Korean attire).
However, it operates on a pre-reservation system,
so you need to book in advance!
(Phone reservations are required)
Especially for the Hanbok experience, same-day bookings are not available.
These days, with the beautiful weather and many people heading out for excursions,
weekend reservations fill up incredibly fast!

The Sochang Experience Center is quite compact,
so its parking lot is small.
Sochang Experience Center Guide
The Sochang Experience Center is said to be a renovated space, formerly Pyeonghwa Textile, which was acquired and transformed from a Hanok (traditional Korean house) and dyeing factory built in 1938.
It features an exhibition hall where you can delve into the history of Ganghwado's textile industry,
and offers hands-on activities like stamping Sochang handkerchiefs and trying on Hanbok.
You can do all this and more!

Sochang Experience Center - Sochang Handkerchief Stamping
Upon entering, you'll spot the Sochang Exhibition Hall.
Walk around the building to your right,
and the Sochang Experience Hall will appear!
We actually got caught in traffic,
so we were a bit late for our reservation.
Since we had also booked the Hanbok experience,
things were a bit rushed...
But a staff member kindly contacted the Hanbok Experience Hall in advance
and helped us push back our schedule a little!
Once the reserved participants are seated,
a staff member will
provide a brief orientation for the experience.
(Experience Duration: 20 minutes)
The experience is already quite short,
and since we were late, we only got to do it for about 10 minutes, unfortunately.
So much regret!
On an unfinished Sochang handkerchief,
you get to decorate it using stamps of Ganghwa's local specialties like ginseng, cotton, turnips, sweet potatoes, and island grapes.
The kids absolutely loved it!
Even though it doesn't have finished edges,
Soschang fabric is woven with 23 threads per unit,
making it lighter and more breathable than regular cotton.
Because it gets softer with each wash,
it's perfect for dishcloths or handkerchiefs.
Ganghwa Sochang Souvenir Exhibition Hall - Hanbok Wearing Experience
After leaving the Sochang Experience Center, if you go straight,
you'll see the Ganghwa Sochang Souvenir Exhibition Hall.
This is where you can try on Hanbok!
Once you step inside, it's beautifully decorated and feels quite luxurious.
There are well-prepared photo zones everywhere,
and the lighting creates a wonderful ambiance.
Upon entering, a staff member will
confirm your reservation,
and then you can choose your Hanbok, accessories, and ornaments.
For children's Hanbok,
you can choose from Goryeo Dynasty style Hanbok,
while adults can choose between
Goryeo Dynasty style Hanbok
or modernized Hanbok (Gaeryang Hanbok).
I had a hard time deciding here too, haha!
I saw others wearing Gaeryang Hanbok, so I figured they were pretty and picked one,
but it turned out
they were mostly Chinese tourists... I regretted it afterwards, haha!
While the Gaeryang Hanbok was lovely, I regretted my choice after seeing everyone else wearing it.
(Gaeryang Hanbok is pretty, of course,
but you can try it on in many other places too.)
Personally, I'd recommend the
Goryeo Dynasty style Hanbok over the Gaeryang Hanbok.
(Of course, personal preferences are always respected!)
Seeing the children wear them,
they looked so adorable and authentic!
After choosing your Hanbok, you then select your Hanbok accessories and ornaments.
There's a separate changing room, so
you just need to take off your outer clothing to put on the Hanbok. The staff were incredibly kind!
One of the staff members, who seemed to be Chinese,
even provided guidance in Chinese.
Now, it's time to head outside and
just enjoy taking pictures!

You can take photos outside while wearing the Hanbok.
(I couldn't sit down for photos,
so I took them standing.)
The entire Sochang Experience Center is built in the Hanok style, which is incredibly beautiful,
and it's not too large,
so 30 minutes was plenty of time for taking pictures.
Once we headed indoors,
a staff member took more photos for us.
They were truly wonderful!!
(And they took such beautiful photos~
multiple shots, which was great!)
The staff at the Sochang Experience Center
were all incredibly kind.
They truly deserve all the praise!!!
Sochang Exhibition Hall
Right from the entrance,
the first place that caught my eye upon entering
was the Sochang Exhibition Hall.
After the textile plan was established in Ganghwado in 1912,
more than 60 factories, including Joyang Bangjik, Simdo Textile, Ehwa Textile, and Pyeonghwa Textile,
were built, and
the textile industry flourished until the 1970s.
However, from the mid-to-late 1970s,
the center of the textile industry shifted to Daegu, which produced synthetic fibers,
and with the import of Chinese cotton yarn and other materials,
Ganghwa's textile industry
now only has seven factories continuing its legacy.
Nevertheless, Sochang is still produced in Ganghwado today!
It shows the process of taking cotton to make yarn,
weaving it into cotton thread using a plain weave,
and then transforming the cotton thread into Sochang fabric.
Through the window,
I watched the weaving machine running
for a long time.
The Sochang handkerchiefs made here
are used for the stamp printing
experience.
After enthusiastically exploring,
I started to get hungry,
so I headed to
Surajeon Traditional Yukgaejang, a restaurant I could walk to!
The Sochang Experience Center operates daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. From 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, it is reserved for program preparation and facility maintenance. The center is closed every Monday, January 1st, and on the days of Seollal (Lunar New Year) and Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving).
Both experiences operate on a reservation-only basis. You can apply by calling 032-934-2500. Please note that same-day reservations are not possible for the Hanbok experience.
The Sochang Handkerchief Stamping experience takes approximately 20 minutes. You can decorate your handkerchief using stamps of Ganghwa's local specialties, such as ginseng, cotton, turnip, sweet potato, and island grapes.
Children can choose Goryeo Dynasty Hanbok, while adults can select either Goryeo Dynasty Hanbok or modernized Hanbok. Outdoor photography is permitted while wearing Hanbok, but you must stand for photos; sitting is not allowed.
Admission to the Sochang Experience Center is free, and the experience fees for all programs, including the Sochang Handkerchief Stamping and Hanbok Wearing experiences, are also free. However, all experiences operate on a reservation-only basis.
