Discover Somwang Boutique Hotel, a peaceful budget oasis in Chiang Mai Old Town featuring a pool, delicious breakfast, and clean rooms starting at just $32.
Having stayed at several properties across Chiang Mai's historic Old Town, there is one particular hotel that truly stands out from the rest. Let me introduce you to this hidden gem.
It's called Somwang Boutique Hotel. While many budget accommodations in the Old Town tend to feel a bit run-down and dated, this boutique property offers beautifully maintained rooms, a refreshing outdoor pool, and a delicious breakfast. It’s an ideal choice whether you're a solo adventurer, traveling as a couple, or on a family vacation.

Somwang Boutique Hotel Location

Somwang Boutique Hotel is perfectly situated on the eastern side of the Old Town, just a short walk from the iconic Tha Phae Gate. It's incredibly close to the famous Blue Noodle (a must-visit for mouthwatering local beef noodles!), as well as vibrant weekend night markets and cultural parades. Because the hotel is tucked away at the end of a quiet alley rather than right on the main road, you won't have to worry about traffic noise at all.

Checking In

Upon arriving, you'll head into the cozy reception office. The check-in process was incredibly smooth and quick—just a simple name check and I was good to go.

They also offer convenient luggage storage if you arrive early or have a late flight. One of the best things about staying in Chiang Mai is how incredibly warm, welcoming, and English-proficient the hotel staff are. Communication was an absolute breeze!

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property, and breakfast is served daily from 7:30 AM to 10:00 AM. During my stay, it rained quite a bit, but have you ever tried swimming in the rain? It's surprisingly romantic and incredibly fun! Haha.
The Rooms

Step inside, and you'll find a wonderfully spacious room. There's plenty of floor space to layout your suitcases with room to spare, making it perfect for two travelers. I opted for the Superior Twin Room, but if you're traveling in a group of three or more, booking a Standard Triple Room will give you all the space you need.

The room comes fully equipped with fresh towels, an electric kettle, and complimentary coffee and tea. They even provide handy clothes hangers—a thoughtful touch for drying your swimwear after a dip in the pool!

The bathroom features a split layout, with the sink area separated from the toilet and shower. I always prefer this setup as it makes getting ready in the morning so much easier when sharing a room.

The toiletries provided are top-notch. Instead of generic, drying hotel soap, they offer beautifully scented products, including Sunsilk hair treatment—a legendary Thai beauty product that travelers always stock up on before heading home!
Rates are incredibly reasonable, with standard rooms starting at around ~$32 per night, and spacious Standard Triple Rooms hovering around the low ~$64 range.

Breakfast Buffet & Mains

Rise and shine! Let’s head down to see what's on the breakfast menu, shall we?

They offer a selection of local Thai instant noodles. If you've never tried them, you're missing out! Exploring local convenience store flavors is a fun travel ritual, and Thai cup noodles are packed with incredibly vibrant spices.

There's a clean spread featuring fresh bread, a toaster, various jams, milk, and orange juice—all the continental essentials done right.

In addition to the buffet, you can order one freshly cooked main dish from their illustrated menu. I went with a classic, fluffy omelet!

They say we eat with our eyes first, and this beautiful presentation is the perfect proof. Plus, when in Chiang Mai, eating mango every single day is practically a rule of law!

I kept my plate relatively light and neat. While I used to load up on breakfast buffets, I prefer a lighter start these days. After all, you have to save plenty of room for all the incredible lunch spots waiting for you in Chiang Mai! Haha. While the selection wasn't massive, every item was delicious and high quality.
That wraps up my review of Somwang Boutique Hotel in Chiang Mai Old Town. At around ~$32 a night, getting access to a beautiful pool and a freshly prepared breakfast makes this an unbelievable value. I'll absolutely be staying here again on my next trip to the Old Town!
