To get straight to the point, booking your tickets sooner rather than later is a smart move.
The September fuel surcharge is at Level 21, which is 7 levels higher than August's,
meaning that for the same route,
there's quite a significant difference in the amount paid by those who booked in August versus those who book in September.
This post is for anyone curious about the extent of the September fuel surcharge increase,
especially if you're wondering when to book your flights to Japan or Vietnam,

1. What is a Fuel Surcharge & Why is it Rising in September?
A fuel surcharge is a fee that airlines add to flight fares to reflect increases in international oil prices.
It's added separately from the basic airfare, and the amount varies by flight distance (route) and level.
The key thing to remember is that it's based on the date of ticket issuance (the day you pay for your ticket), not the departure date.
So, even if your trip is in September,
if you book your ticket in August, the August fuel surcharge will apply.
The September fuel surcharge increased due to oil prices.
The average oil price from July 16th to August 15th, which is the basis for the September fuel surcharge calculation, was $149.29 per barrel,
a jump of over $30 per barrel compared to the previous calculation period.
This is why the downward trend, which had continued for three consecutive months in June, July, and August after reaching a peak in May (Level 33), reversed in September.

The September international fuel surcharge is at Level 21.
This is 7 levels higher than August's Level 14, making it the highest level in three months.

For routes covering 500-999 miles, including Japan (Tokyo, Osaka, Sapporo, Okinawa) and Taipei, Taiwan, the one-way fare has increased from ~$34 to ~$46, a rise of ~$11 per one-way ticket.

For routes covering 1,500-1,999 miles, including Da Nang, Hanoi, and Cebu, the one-way fare has risen from ~$55 to ~$76, an increase of ~$20 per one-way ticket.
Vietnam (Nha Trang, Phu Quoc, Ho Chi Minh), Bangkok (Thailand) |
For routes covering 2,000-2,999 miles, including Nha Trang, Phu Quoc, Ho Chi Minh, and Bangkok,
You'll see a jump from ~$68 to ~$106, meaning a significant ~$37 increase for a one-way trip!
Fukuoka is an exception, being the shortest route under
500 miles, so it goes from ~$24 to ~$33.

Fuel surcharges are calculated per one-way trip. Don't forget, for a round trip, this amount doubles, and then multiplies by the number of family members traveling. Infants under 2 years old who don't occupy a seat are exempt. |
3. How much are Japan flight tickets increasing?
Most routes to Japan (Tokyo, Osaka, Sapporo, Okinawa)
fall within the 500-999 mile range.
This includes popular routes like Incheon to Narita, Osaka, Sapporo, Okinawa,
and Gimpo to Haneda.
For these routes, you'll see a climb from ~$34 to ~$46,
an ~$11 increase one-way.
For a round trip, that's an extra ~$23 per person, and for a family of four, the fuel surcharge alone adds over ~$90 to your travel budget!
Even for short-haul flights, this isn't an amount to ignore.
Just to note, Fukuoka is the only route that falls into an even shorter distance category,
making it slightly cheaper at ~$33 one-way.
Typically, Tokyo flight tickets can soar to ~$276 - ~$345 during peak season,
and if fuel surcharges go up,
it's projected that flights will be at least ~$21 more expensive than they are now.
In fact, as of late August, October Tokyo flight prices were already seeing
~$276, and for prime time slots, they even climbed up to ~$483!
Flights in the ~$276 range also had very few seats available, making them hard to snag.
One silver lining I found was that,
for a 3-night, 4-day or 4-night, 5-day trip starting on the 22nd (two days before the Chuseok holiday),
Tokyo flight prices kicked off from the ~$276 range.
So, if you're thinking, 'Should I go to Japan for the Chuseok holiday?',
I highly recommend checking fast!
Plus, if you book in September, the increased fuel surcharge will apply.
So, just confirming your travel dates and booking within August can save you money!

4. How much are Vietnam flight tickets increasing?
For Vietnam routes, the fuel surcharge categories vary by city.
Even within Vietnam,
there's a difference of over ~$21 for a one-way trip!
✅ Da Nang, Hanoi: From ~$55 to ~$76
(one-way +~$20 / round-trip +~$41)
✅ Nha Trang, Phu Quoc, Ho Chi Minh: From ~$68 to ~$106
(one-way +~$37 / round-trip +~$74)
Nha Trang and Phu Quoc are further away than Da Nang, so their increase is even more significant.
For a round trip, it adds over ~$69 per person,
and for a family of four, the fuel surcharge difference alone exceeds a whopping ~$297!
If you're planning a trip to Nha Trang or Phu Quoc,
I especially recommend booking your tickets ASAP!
For reference, as of today (August 29), October flights to Nha Trang were going for
around the late ~$207 range – quite a decent price!
Since prices are expected to jump into the ~$276 range by September,

Domestic fuel surcharges are also going up.
Based on Korean Air, one-way from ~$11 ➜ ~$14
An increase of ~$3. For a round trip, an additional ~$6 will be added per person.
Since domestic flights also follow the ticketing date,
for those planning domestic flights to Jeju, Daegu, etc.,
booking by August is advantageous.
To summarize, since fuel surcharges will increase for tickets issued from September,
ticketing by August is how to save money.
However, since the basic airfare changes frequently,
I recommend comparing up to the final payment amount.
If your itinerary is confirmed, book by August.
If it's still undecided, fuel surcharges could change again next month,
so I recommend monitoring oil price trends and comparing with the total fare.
Before that, it's good to know the approximate price range in advance,
and you can also check seat availability right away,
