Along the way, we enjoyed spotting sgraffito decorations, where patterns are etched into the plaster of the buildings.
As we ambled through the streets, we even spotted a familiar green logo – a Starbucks. If you're walking from Strahov Monastery to Prague Castle and need a quick break, this location could be a handy pit stop.
The ordinary-looking residential alleys eventually open up into Hradčany Square, where the panoramic view of Prague city and the soaring spires of St. Vitus Cathedral instantly take your breath away. The climb up was absolutely worth it for this stunning vista!
From Hradčany Square, the main entrance visible between the guard posts isn't the Matthias Gate, but rather the Gate of Giants, also known as the Titan Gate. Passing through this impressive archway leads you into the First Courtyard. The stone gate directly ahead in this courtyard is the Matthias Gate, which grants access to the Second Courtyard.

Stepping inside St. Vitus Cathedral, you're immediately struck by the stunning stained-glass windows, each chapel featuring different colors and compositions. The window captured in my photo particularly stood out with its geometric design, a departure from traditional religious imagery.
The magnificent large rose window on the upper part of the western façade is a masterpiece designed by Czech painter and designer František Kysela. It depicts the story of Creation from the Bible, divided into various scenes. It was fascinating to examine each radiating panel within the circular window.
The cathedral's interior allows you to frame the impressive pipe organ and the rose window together, creating a truly grand perspective. Facing the western facade, the full composition of the rose window is even more clearly visible.
Among the many opulent features inside the cathedral, the Tomb of St. John of Nepomuk truly stands out with its dazzling splendor.
Described in official St. Vitus Cathedral resources as a ‘monumental silver tomb,’ this 18th-century work features intricate Baroque and Rococo ornamentation, adorned with layers of angelic sculptures. Even in photos, its grandeur and gleaming silver details are striking.
