Traveling from Prague city to Václav Havel Airport? Learn the best public transport routes, how to use the PID app, and crucial luggage ticket info for a hassle-free journey. Start planning!
Quick answer
Prague's public transport (metro, tram, bus) is integrated and managed via the PID app.
To Prague Airport (PRG), use metro + bus, or tram + bus, taking ~40-60 minutes.
Large luggage (over 10 x 18 x 28 inches) requires a separate luggage ticket via the PID app.
24-hour or 72-hour PID tickets include one piece of luggage for free.
Allow at least 2 hours for international departures from Václav Havel Airport (PRG).

Prague, Czech Republic, boasts an incredibly efficient public transportation system. With its seamlessly integrated metro, tram, and bus lines, navigating the city is a breeze, especially with the handy PID app.
Even getting to the airport can be done affordably and conveniently via public transport, saving you from expensive taxi fares. On my last day in Prague, I used the PID app to purchase tickets and took the tram and bus to Václav Havel Airport, and I was pleasantly surprised by how quick and easy it was!
However, if you're traveling with large luggage, you might need an additional luggage ticket, so pay close attention to the rules.
This guide covers how to get from Prague city center to the airport, how to add luggage tickets using the PID app, and my experience departing from Václav Havel Airport.
Your Essential Guide: Prague City to Airport Transit with PID Luggage Tips
1️⃣ Getting to the Airport from the City
2️⃣ Adding Luggage in the PID App
3️⃣ Václav Havel Airport Departure
1. Getting to the Airport from the City

There are generally three main ways to get from Prague city center to Václav Havel Airport (PRG):
✔️ Metro + Bus
✔️ Tram + Bus
✔️ Airport Express Bus
If you choose the Metro and Bus option, simply take Metro Line A to Nádraží Veleslavín station, then transfer to Bus 59. This route typically takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour from the city center and is a very cost-effective choice, using standard public transport fares.

We opted for the Tram + Bus method. From the Karlovy Lázně tram stop, just a 5-minute walk from our hotel, we hopped on Tram 2 to Petriny station, then transferred to Airport Bus 191. We had budgeted an hour for the journey, but it actually took us only about 40 minutes – surprisingly fast!

Our accommodation, the Residence Bologna Hotel, was incredibly convenient, just a 5-minute walk to the tram stop, making it easy to manage our luggage. Plus, it was only an 8-minute walk to Charles Bridge, so on our departure morning, we enjoyed a final stroll across the iconic bridge, had a delicious breakfast back at the hotel, and checked out with plenty of time to spare.

If you're finding it challenging to bring large suitcases on regular trams or buses, consider using the Airport Express bus or a private transfer service.
Keep in mind that the Airport Express bus departs from near Florenc Station, so you'll need to factor in getting there. Both the Airport Express bus and private transfers can be booked conveniently through Klook.

2. Adding Luggage in the PID App

To make the most of Prague's public transportation, I highly recommend installing the PID app.
While you could rely solely on paper tickets, there's always the risk of losing them, and constantly searching for ticket vendors can be a hassle. The PID app allows you to search for metro, tram, and bus routes, and even purchase tickets directly, making it incredibly convenient for your entire trip.

PID App Ticket Prices:
✔️ 30-minute ticket: 36 CZK
✔️ 90-minute ticket: 46 CZK
✔️ 24-hour ticket: 140 CZK
✔️ 72-hour ticket: 340 CZK
When traveling from the city center to the airport, it's a good idea to purchase the 90-minute ticket to account for transfers and potential waiting times.
Remember to activate your purchased ticket in the app before boarding.

A crucial point to note is that for larger suitcases, you'll need to purchase an additional luggage ticket, depending on its size.
Luggage within 10 x 18 x 28 inches (25 x 45 x 70 cm) is usually free, but anything exceeding these dimensions requires a separate baggage ticket. You can find the "Luggage" ticket option by scrolling down in the ticket purchase screen of the app.

Unlike regular tickets where you select a validity period and city, the luggage ticket is a fixed 3-hour ticket valid across all regions in the Czech Republic. Since we used a 90-minute ticket for our journey to the airport, we purchased a separate luggage ticket.
However, if you have a 24-hour or 72-hour ticket, you can carry one piece of luggage for free.

3. Václav Havel Airport Departure

Prague's Václav Havel Airport (PRG) is a relatively compact airport, comparable in size to some regional airports, which means navigating it is straightforward and not overwhelming.
The airport has two terminals, with most international flights departing from Terminal 1. As we were flying Emirates to Dubai, we also headed to Terminal 1.

From airline check-in at Terminal 1 to luggage drop-off and completing immigration, it took us just over an hour. Given the airport's manageable size, once you clear security, it's not a long walk to your gate.
Nevertheless, for international departures, I always recommend arriving at least 2 hours prior to your scheduled flight to allow ample time.

We booked our flight tickets through Trip.com, and their app was incredibly helpful at the airport, providing easy access to check-in counter and boarding gate information.
Trip.com frequently runs flight discount promotions. For example, this **October 2026**, there's a Trip.com flight discount code available, allowing you to book your flights at a more affordable price.
