During a recent stroll through a charming neighborhood, I stumbled upon a beautiful church.

Turns out, it’s the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Penang's second-oldest church, boasting over 200 years of history!

Let me tell you all about the Church of the Immaculate Conception.​

Church History & Mass Times

This historic church is nestled in the Pulau Tikus area of George Town.

You can easily find it by searching for 'Church of the Immaculate Conception' on Google Maps.

It's not far from Gurney Drive, making it a perfect addition to your itinerary if you're visiting Gurney Plaza or one of the fantastic hawker centers nearby.

Mass times are as follows:

Weekdays: 6:00 PM (English)

Saturdays: 5:30 PM, followed by an English Mass at 6:00 PM.

Sundays: 8:30 AM (English Mass). The 11:30 AM Mass rotates languages: the 1st Sunday is English, the 2nd and 4th Sundays are Tamil, and the 3rd Sunday is Malay.

Outside of these mass times, visitors are welcome to explore the church freely.

A Glimpse into History

The history of this church dates back to 1811. It was founded by Father John Baptist Pasqual, who arrived in Pulau Tikus from Phuket, Thailand.

Interestingly, it also has a connection to Korea.

Father Jacques Honoré Chastan, who served as the fourth parish priest here from 1830 to 1833, later became a missionary in Korea and was martyred there.

He was canonized as a saint by Pope John Paul II in 1984.

The original church building was used until 1835 before being rebuilt with bricks.

Subsequently, St. Xavier's Branch School and the Pulau Tikus Convent were established around the church, fostering a vibrant hub for local education and missionary activities.

In 1899, part of the ceiling collapsed, leading to another reconstruction. After extensive renovations in the late 1960s, the church took on its present-day appearance.

Exploring the Church's Beauty

Stepping inside the church's interior, you'll be immediately captivated by its soaring ceilings and exquisite stained-glass windows.

The natural light filtering through the stained glass creates a kaleidoscope of colors, imbuing the space with a truly mystical ambiance.

Take your time to admire the intricate details of the stained glass; it's quite remarkable. You might even want to find a quiet pew and soak in the serene atmosphere.

Given Malaysia's incredible diversity, it’s no surprise that the congregation here comprises people from various ethnic backgrounds.

During my brief visit, I observed individuals of Indian, Chinese, and Malay descent, reflecting the multicultural tapestry of the region.

The church's striking white exterior is a splendid example of British colonial architecture.

Its Gothic spire and graceful arched windows create a harmonious blend, exuding both grandeur and a profound sense of reverence.

Final Thoughts

While I was aware of Malaysia's religious diversity, I hadn't realized there were such significant churches here.

Though I don't follow any particular religion, discovering this historically rich church during my walk offered a moment of quiet contemplation and awe.

When you visit Penang, most travelers tend to explore the famous temples and mosques. However, I highly recommend setting aside some time to discover this hidden gem of a church.
