Established in 1884, these gardens have served as a cherished retreat for Penang locals and a vibrant sanctuary for tropical plants for over 142 years.

The Penang Botanical Gardens are located about a 20-minute Grab ride from George Town.

Public bus routes can be a bit tricky to navigate to this spot, so I highly recommend using Grab for convenience.

About the Penang Botanical Gardens

Established during the British colonial era, the Penang Botanical Gardens are affectionately known as 'Waterfall Gardens' by locals.

Spanning approximately 72 acres (29 hectares) around a picturesque waterfall, these gardens boast a diverse collection of tropical plants.

Reflecting Penang's historical role as a hub for the spice trade, you'll also discover a fascinating array of spice plants during your visit.

Exploring the Penang Botanical Gardens

As you make your way to the Penang Botanical Gardens, you'll notice that vehicle access is restricted beyond a certain point. Instead of cars, you might encounter monkeys gracefully navigating the paths!

Don't be alarmed; they typically keep to themselves and aren't aggressive, so there's no need to be scared.

If you visit in the morning, you'll see many locals out for a jog. Given that many urban areas in Penang don't have extensive parks or well-maintained sidewalks, these gardens serve as a popular and beautiful spot for exercise.

A leisurely stroll through the gardens typically takes about an hour. It's best to think of it more as a sprawling park than a traditional botanical garden.

Surrounded by magnificent trees, this building is actually a restroom, and I was pleased to find it well-maintained and clean.

The most captivating aspect for me was encountering a vast array of plant species unique to this tropical climate, unlike anything you'd typically see in more temperate regions.

Even if you're just here for a casual walk, I encourage you to take your time and admire each unique tree. Many have QR codes at their base; scan them to learn more about the specific plant!

Look at these incredible leaves! As you explore, you'll discover various plants you've likely never seen before, making for a truly enjoyable walk.

Follow these paths uphill, and you'll find a small pond known as the Lily Pond. With lotus flowers blooming and a wonderfully serene atmosphere, I spent a good amount of time here, simply relaxing and soaking in the peace.

Sitting amidst these giant trees, I felt a wonderful sense of disconnection from the outside world, as if I'd entered a secluded sanctuary.

However, a word of caution: it can be quite humid here, leading to slippery paths, and mosquitoes are definitely present.

Visitor Tips

Tip ①

Visit Before Sunrise

We visited the Penang Botanical Gardens twice: once around 9:00 AM and another time around 7:00 AM.

There isn't much shade within the gardens, so it can get incredibly hot once the sun is fully out. While our 9:00 AM visit was quite warm and sticky, visiting around 7:00 AM was wonderfully cool and refreshing.

Insect Repellent & Long Pants are Essential

The only place I got mosquito bites during my Penang trip was right here. With so many trees and lush vegetation, it's a prime spot for mosquitoes.

I highly recommend wearing lightweight long pants and generously applying insect repellent before your visit.

A Few Minor Drawbacks

Several greenhouses were unfortunately closed, so we couldn't peek inside.

Also, for a botanical garden managed by the state, it felt more like a large public park than a meticulously curated garden. For those seeking a dedicated tourist attraction with specific exhibits, it might not quite meet expectations.

Overall Verdict

The Penang Botanical Gardens aren't directly in George Town and require a Grab ride to reach. Therefore, if you're on a short trip to Penang, you might consider skipping it.

However, for those on an extended stay, like a month-long visit, I highly recommend coming in the early morning, before sunrise, for a refreshing walk or jog.
