just about a 20-minute ride via Grab (Malaysia's popular ride-hailing app).

While public buses might get you there, a Grab is definitely the most convenient option, offering a smooth and direct journey to the entrance.

Introducing the Penang Botanical Gardens

Conceived during the British colonial era, the Penang Botanical Gardens are affectionately known as the 'Waterfall Gardens' by locals. This sprawling 72-acre (29-hectare) expanse is home to an incredible diversity of tropical plants, all centered around a picturesque valley with a flowing waterfall.

Reflecting Penang's rich history as a hub for the spice trade, you'll discover a fascinating array of spice plants here, making it a living testament to the island's heritage.

Exploring the Penang Botanical Gardens

As you make your way to the gardens, you'll notice that vehicle access is restricted past a certain point. Instead of cars, you might encounter monkeys casually crossing the path!

Don't worry, these clever creatures are generally accustomed to humans and tend to mind their own business, so there's no need to be alarmed.

If you visit in the morning, you'll see plenty of locals out for a jog. Given the tropical climate, expansive green spaces like this are cherished for exercise and enjoying nature, making it a popular spot for their daily routines.

A leisurely walk through the gardens takes just over an hour. It's best to think of it less as a formal botanical exhibit and more as a vast, natural park where you can wander freely.

Tucked away amidst the beautiful trees, you'll find the restrooms. They are surprisingly well-maintained, offering a clean and convenient stop during your visit.

What truly fascinated me was encountering plant species so different from those back home. The tropical climate here cultivates an incredible variety of unique foliage.

Even if you're just here for a casual walk, take your time to admire each tree. Many have a QR code at their base – scan it to learn more about the specific plant you're looking at!

Look at these incredible leaves! You'll find unique plants hidden around every corner, making for a truly enjoyable and surprising walk.

Follow these paths uphill, and you'll discover the serene Lily Pond, a small, tranquil oasis.

With beautiful lotus flowers blooming and a peaceful atmosphere, it's the perfect spot to sit for a while and soak in the calming vibes.

Sitting surrounded by these magnificent trees, I truly felt disconnected from the outside world, immersed in nature's embrace.

However, a word of caution: this area can be quite humid, with plenty of mosquitoes, and the ground may be slippery. Be sure to come prepared!

Visitor Tip ①

Arrive Before the Sun Gets Too High

We actually visited the Penang Botanical Gardens twice. The first time was around 9:00 AM, and the second was closer to 7:00 AM.

There isn't much shade within the gardens themselves, so once the sun is fully up, it gets incredibly hot and humid. A 9:00 AM visit left us feeling quite sweaty, but arriving around 7:00 AM was absolutely perfect – cool, refreshing, and truly enjoyable.

Pack Insect Repellent & Wear Long Pants

Out of our entire trip to Penang, this was the only place where we encountered mosquitoes. Naturally, with so many trees and lush greenery, they're quite prevalent here.

I highly recommend wearing lightweight long pants and generously applying insect repellent before you start your exploration.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

While we were there, a few of the greenhouses were unfortunately closed, so we couldn't peek inside. Also, for a national botanical garden, it felt more like a large public park than a meticulously curated tourist attraction.

Manage your expectations accordingly – it's a beautiful green space, but perhaps not what you'd typically envision as a highly structured botanical garden experience.

Final Thoughts

The Penang Botanical Gardens aren't located right in the heart of George Town, requiring a Grab ride to get there. Because of this, if you're on a short trip to Penang, you might consider skipping it in favor of other central attractions.

However, if you're like us and enjoying a longer stay (say, a month or more), I highly recommend visiting early in the morning, before sunrise, for a refreshing walk or jog. It's a fantastic way to experience the local lifestyle and connect with nature.
