Penang Morning Market
Mount Erskine Market
Hello everyone,
I'm Nomadsalmi, your FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) travel blogger!😊
Lately, we've been enjoying our mornings at the morning markets,
primarily for breakfast.
I'm planning to introduce you to a few morning markets here in Penang,
and today's spotlight is on
the Mount Erskine Market.
Mount Erskine Market Location & Operating Hours
📍 Mount Erskine Market
800, Jalan Mount Erskine, George Town, 10470 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia
Location
About a 30-minute drive from George Town, Penang,
Mount Erskine Market is where locals head daily
to shop for groceries or grab their morning meal.

Operating Hours
It operates from 6 AM until 1 PM,
and the earlier you visit,
the fresher the ingredients you'll find!
On weekends, even more stalls pop up,
making the atmosphere even more vibrant.
Exploring the Market

As you step inside,
the first thing you'll notice is the vibrant vegetable and fruit section.
Following that, you'll find stalls dedicated to fresh fish, seafood, and meats.

On one side of the market,
you'll find a cluster of shops selling dried goods and spices,
while on the other, there's a bustling food court
offering freshly prepared dishes.
The sounds of bargaining in Malay blend with the enticing aromas of delicious food throughout the market,
creating an incredibly lively atmosphere.

The fresh tropical fruits are particularly impressive.
Depending on the season, you can enjoy dragon fruit, mangosteens, longans, and more
at incredibly affordable prices.

As for vegetables,
you'll find many tropical varieties that are hard to come by in Korea.
In particular, there's an abundance of aromatic vegetables
used to make various curries.
In the seafood section,
you can check out fresh fish and shrimp
caught just that morning.

Since we don't cook meals at home,
we mostly frequent the morning market when buying fruits.

Here's a little tip:
since you pick out the fruits yourself here,
the best ones can go quickly.
I recommend going early in the morning
to make your purchases.

Compared to supermarkets,
you can buy fruits at much more affordable prices.
The fruits we usually buy are
mangoes (6-7 MYR/kg) and
mangosteens (10 MYR/kg).
For 1kg of mangoes, you can usually get about two pieces,
which works out to roughly ~$1 per piece.
It's truly inexpensive and the taste is superb.
Exploring the Food Court

You can enjoy local dishes like Chee Cheong Fun and Bee Hoon
at incredibly low prices.
Even though the setting might be humble, the flavors are just as good as any restaurant!

You'll find designated spots like these everywhere to enjoy your meal,
so just grab an empty seat and order your food.
Drink & Food Review

Just like at the night markets,
you'll need to order drinks at the morning market too.

Drinks
We ordered Teh O and Kopi O,
and the price was the same for both: 2.20 Ringgit.
Fair warning: both were incredibly sweet!
Kopi O is not only sweet but also incredibly strong coffee,
so I haven't dared to drink it since that day 🤣.
If you ask for 'no sugar' with Teh O (pronounced 'teh-oh'),
you can enjoy a refreshing and unsweetened black tea.
These days, my go-to order is 'Teh O Ice No Sugar!' – highly recommend!
I had just arrived in Penang then,
so I wasn't very familiar with the local drinks and ordered these.
But now that I'm more adventurous, I'm experimenting and ordering a variety of different beverages!

Food
For our meal, we decided on Nasi Lemak and Wantan Mee.
We even got the Wantan Mee in two styles:
soup and dry!

Two Wantan Mee dishes for 12.50 Ringgit,
which is roughly ~$3.
Talk about amazing value for money, right?
While you might not call the portions huge,
it's just the right amount – you wouldn't want to overeat first thing in the morning anyway, right?

The ingredients are the same;
it's just a matter of whether you prefer it in soup or stir-fried.
It comes with several dumplings
and even has some meat on top!

Wantan Mee (Soup)
The broth for the soup Wantan Mee was
both light yet packed with umami,
and the noodles were perfectly chewy and absolutely delicious!
It would even make a great hangover cure in the morning!

Wantan Mee (Dry)
The dry Wantan Mee had a look similar to Jjapagetti (a popular Korean instant black bean noodle dish),
offering a savory and incredibly slurpable flavor.
I was absolutely thrilled to enjoy such delicious noodles at such an unbeatable price!

Nasi Lemak
If the noodle portion feels a bit small,
why not add a Nasi Lemak to your order?
It's a quintessential Malaysian breakfast dish made with fragrant rice cooked in coconut milk,
served with a spicy sambal sauce,
and accompanied by crispy anchovies, roasted peanuts, refreshing cucumber slices, and more.
A true must-try!

At the morning market, you can get it for just 2.3 Ringgit,
which is about ~$1.
The portion is even larger than a convenience store onigiri (triangle kimbap),
so the value for money is truly excellent – you can't beat that!
Overall Impression
Mount Erskine Market is a place
where you can discover the real Penang,
offering a different vibe than tourist-filled Georgetown.
From early morning, you'll see bustling
merchants and regular customers engaging in friendly banter,
and even delicious street food –
it’s where you can experience the daily life
of Penang locals up close and personal.
Since morning markets are found all over,
even if it's not this exact spot,
if there's a morning market near you,
I highly recommend you pay it a visit!
I hope my post helps you have a wonderful trip❤️
