Oksu Jangeo: A Must-Visit Eel Restaurant in Gapo, Masan
Review of their 100% Wild-Caught "Hamo" Cold Raw Fish Soup (Mulhoe)—The Ultimate Summer Health Booster!
Every year, we hear warnings about the "hottest summer ever,"
but this year, it feels like the real deal.
Even sitting right under the AC, I've been feeling completely drained and exhausted.
To properly recharge my batteries, I headed out to Masan Gapo New Port
to visit the famous Oksu Jangeo (Oksu Eel).
Oksu Jangeo Quick Info

Hours - 10:00 AM - 9:00 PM
Break Time - 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM (Weekdays only)

It's a pretty massive restaurant occupying both the 1st and 2nd floors of the building.
With two different entrances connected from both sides,
getting in and out is incredibly convenient!
As I was snapping pictures of the exterior, an elderly gentleman
walked past and warmly said, "Oh, sorry for getting in your shot, dear!" in a lovely local accent.
It turns out he was actually the owner of Oksu Jangeo! Haha.
Sharing that friendly banter right from the start
made me feel so welcome as I stepped inside.

The owner even handed me his business card,
and I noticed he runs the restaurant under his actual name.
Whenever a chef or owner puts their own name on the sign,
you know it's going to be amazing. My expectations skyrocketed instantly!
I also found out that the cozy, camping-themed "Camrang Barbecue" right across the street
is run by the very same owner! How cool is that?
It seems Oksu Jangeo was closed for a little while,
but they’ve recently remodeled and reopened fresh!
Dedicated Parking Lot

Oksu Jangeo's Private Parking Lot
The dedicated parking lot is so incredibly spacious and wide open,
even beginner drivers will have absolutely zero trouble parking here.
With zero parking stress,
it's the perfect stop to add to a scenic drive around Gapo.
Origin Transparency Board

They have their ingredient origin board proudly displayed right at the entrance.
But I was genuinely surprised because instead of just listing the regions,
they actually attached the original shipping labels from local farms across the country!
I've never seen a restaurant do this before. Talk about ultimate transparency!
Inside the Restaurant

Oksu Jangeo - 1st Floor
Stepping inside, the restaurant felt incredibly spacious, bright, and clean.
The staff welcomed us with warm smiles,
and there was so much room between tables, making it an ideal spot
for a comfortable family gathering.
In fact, there was a diverse crowd—from families with young kids
to local elders enjoying a hearty meal.
Since new guests kept streaming in, I only snapped a few quick shots of the interior!

On one side of the dining room, there's a spotless self-serve bar
where you can grab extra side dishes whenever you want,
and the beverage fridges were fully stocked with ice-cold drinks.

Oksu Jangeo - 2nd Floor
The second floor is set up with massive group seating,
making it the perfect atmosphere for team dinners or big celebrations!
Review Event & Menu

You can easily order right from your seat
using the digital tablet menu at each table.
They're currently running a Naver Receipt Review and Karrot Market review event.
If you participate, you can choose between 3 pieces of fried eel, 3 dumplings,
or a free soft drink!
And yes, you can actually double dip by participating on both Naver and Karrot—
talk about an incredibly generous deal!
Living up to the reputation of having the owner's name right on the sign,
Oksu Jangeo serves up top-tier grilled eel. But there's also a major feature
that sets them completely apart from your run-of-the-mill eel restaurants.
And that is...
you can enjoy "Hamo" (wild daggertooth pike conger), Korea's ultimate summer delicacy,
prepared in a variety of delicious ways!
They use 100% wild-caught, premium-grade Hamo, which is notoriously hard to find in regular restaurants,
delivering an instant, powerful energy boost...
From Hamo (conger eel) mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) to Hamo shabu-shabu and Hamo sashimi
You can choose whatever suits your taste.
There are so many options on the menu, so I took a video of it!
Check it out for your reference~~
Since I had Hamo shabu-shabu during my recent trip to Mokpo,
this time I decided to order the ultimate summer delicacy—
Hamo mulhoe!
When ordering mulhoe, you can choose between rice or noodles.
We went with the noodles.
A true cold raw fish soup hotspot where icy broth meets fresh Hamo sashimi

Often, cold raw fish soup is served as a single dish without side dishes,
but Oksu Jangeo serves up a lovely spread of side dishes like this.
It came with a generous serving of noodles and a bowl of seaweed soup
that was perfect for soothing the spicy kick.

The Hamo mulhoe was incredibly generous, with portions practically overflowing at first glance.
The actual portion size was way larger than what you see in the pictures—
I was seriously surprised!

Seeing the visual of rare, wild-caught Hamo piled high on top,
I immediately understood why Oksu Jangeo is currently
going viral as Masan's hottest new cold raw fish soup spot.
It made complete sense.
The icy, slushy, and vibrant marinade absolutely stole the show!
Gently mix it all together so the seasoning
soaks perfectly into the fresh Hamo sashimi and vegetables~~

I tried a bit of the Hamo sashimi on its own before mixing, and
I could really taste that signature rich, nutty flavor of Hamo.
Pairing it with the fresh, crunchy vegetables made it twice as delicious!
The broth was spicy, sweet, sour, and packed with umami,
so we could enjoy it cold and refreshing right to the very last bite without getting tired of it.

My husband dumped all the noodles in right from the start,
devouring it like spicy cold raw fish noodles!

As for me, I ate a decent portion first and then mixed in my noodles.
They cooked the noodles perfectly—they stayed chewy
and bouncy even after sitting in the broth for a while.
The pairing of the broth and noodles was absolutely spectacular haha.
Crispy outside, tender inside fried eel and complimentary Hamo sashimi

Oksu Jangeo Fried Eel
And now, for the most touching moment!!
We didn't even participate in any review events,
but thanks to crossing paths with the owner outside earlier(?),
we received three pieces of fried eel on the house!
Dipping it in soy sauce, the outside was incredibly crispy
while the inside was unbelievably soft and clean-tasting.
Kids would absolutely love this flavor, too.
It's also sold as a standalone side dish,
and at ~$12 for 12 pieces, it’s highly cost-effective
compared to other places nearby.
Overall, Oksu Jangeo in Gap-o, Masan, has incredibly reasonable prices
for all their dishes, including grilled eel :)

Oksu Jangeo Hamo Sashimi
And that wasn't all—they even brought out
some of that precious Hamo sashimi as a service!
I've only ever had Hamo as shabu-shabu, so this was my first time trying it raw.
Placing the chewy, nutty Hamo sashimi on top of a crispy raw onion slice
made for such a wonderfully delightful bite!
Overall Thoughts

The owner kept walking around the restaurant, keeping an eye on the tables.
He even came over to offer us a free bowl of rice,
but we had to politely decline because we were already so full.
The hospitality at Oksu Jangeo was incredibly heartwarming!!
In the end, we basically licked our bowls clean, leaving only a tiny bit of broth haha.

On our way out, we found complimentary candies to freshen up,
and they also sell packaged eel soup to go~

The cold raw fish soup served to us looked exactly like the photo on the store's banner,
keeping us fully satisfied right until the very end.
This local gem in Gapo, Masan truly made me realize why everyone says
summer is the ultimate season for hamo (pike eel)!
I fell completely in love with both the warm, friendly service and the spectacular flavors.
I couldn't help but thank the owner for such an incredible meal!
I’m already planning my next visit very soon
to try their hamo shabu-shabu or classic grilled eel.
If you're looking to beat the summer heat, kickstart your appetite,
and recharge your energy, Oksoo Jangeo in Gapo, Masan is the place to be!
