There's a parking lot available before you reach the temple entrance. While it's free to use, it's not particularly spacious for the number of visitors, so it can get a bit crowded on weekends or during peak hours.

We highly recommend parking only in the designated parking lot. Some visitors park along the narrow alleyways, which can quickly lead to gridlock, making it impossible for cars to enter or exit. Even if you push your way in, there might not be a spot. It's best to wait for departing vehicles to clear out before slowly entering. Rushing to get in quickly might actually cost you more time in the long run.

Past the Iljumun, your eyes will be drawn to the impressive 108 Steps, known for dispelling karmic obstacles.

In Buddhism, the 108 steps symbolize the 108 defilements or afflictions that humans experience. There's a profound meaning in ascending each step, as it's believed to help purify your mind and release one 'karma' (negative habits or obstacles) at a time.

The steps aren't too steep, making this a comfortable path for visitors of all ages, including seniors. Perhaps that's why we noticed more families and older visitors than younger crowds. The ability for anyone, regardless of age, to climb peacefully and without much strain is a significant advantage of Jangsuam Temple.

As you ascend, step by step, notice how the ocean view deepens and transforms. While the sea here isn't a vast, boundless expanse, the gentle, cozy harmony of distant islands dotting the horizon is uniquely charming to Jangsuam.

If it's crowded, turning around while climbing can be risky, so take your time descending to fully soak in the breathtaking scenery!

The Serene Heart: Daeungjeon (Main Hall)

After conquering all 108 steps, you'll reach Daeungjeon, the main hall and spiritual heart of the temple. Daeungjeon, meaning 'Hall of the Great Hero,' is where the Buddha is enshrined, making it the most significant space within the temple complex.

The vibrant Dancheong (traditional Korean decorative painting) and the intricate roof tiles of this building, harmonizing with the deep blue South Sea, create a truly beautiful sight.

Taking a moment to catch your breath in the courtyard of Daeungjeon and gazing at the sea instantly calms the hurried pace from climbing the stairs. Enjoying 'bada meong' (ocean gazing) — where the sea breeze blends with the temple's tranquil incense — was a perfect healing experience in itself.

Most visitors offer prayers at Daeungjeon and then enjoy the view from the 108 steps. However, the area around the Daeungjeon building tends to be less crowded, offering a more peaceful spot to take in the ocean views. If you're seeking a more reflective and unhurried experience, we highly recommend spending some extra time here.

Throughout the temple, including along the stairs and within various buildings, you'll find designated spots for prayer. For those wishing to make a special offering, wish candles are available for purchase (around ~$4) in a dedicated area. Keep this in mind during your visit!

After exploring the temple grounds, you might need a moment to rest. Jangsuam offers a space where you can enjoy coffee and tea, making it a pleasant spot to sit, appreciate the scenery, and refresh yourself.

However, for a pleasant experience for all, there's a small but important etiquette point to be aware of regarding restroom use.

There have been instances where some female visitors, due to long lines, used the men's restroom. We understand the urgency, but imagine the awkwardness if the situation were reversed. It's a moment when demonstrating mature civic consciousness and respecting each other's spaces and privacy becomes truly important.
