Inside Ojukheon, you'll discover a wealth of experiences, including the Ojukheon Municipal Museum, Yulgok's Character Education Center, the Oriental Embroidery Museum, and even a Currency Museum, among others, offering a variety of engaging activities!
Good news for drivers – there's a free parking lot right in front of Ojukheon!

This beautiful flower garden is said to have been inspired by Shin Saimdang's exquisite Chochungdo paintings of plants and insects!

Regular tour times are held 3 times in the morning: 10:00 AM, 10:30 AM, and 11:00 AM
and 5 times in the afternoon: 2:00 PM, 2:30 PM, 3:00 PM, 3:30 PM, and 4:00 PM

Designated as a Treasure on January 21, 1963, Ojukheon holds the incredible distinction of being the oldest residential building in Korea.
Munseongsa Shrine, where the portrait of Yulgok Yi I is enshrined.
This place gets its name from "Munseong," the posthumous name of Yi I.
I captured photos of the kids for the second time in front of Munseongsa Shrine.
Perhaps it's because of the lush greenery, but the photos turned out wonderfully.
Inside Ojukheon, I was able to experience various housing styles of the era and encounter the writings of Master Yulgok.
I truly saw it for the first time too — there really was black bamboo!

At the Yulgok Memorial Hall, you'll find an inspiring collection: Yulgok's own writings, the beautiful posthumous works of Shin Saimdang, and cherished relics belonging to their eldest daughter, Maechang, and youngest son, Oksan Yiwu, are all carefully preserved and exhibited.
The intricate skill of writing on individual grains of rice is truly astounding! (This is a reproduction, of course!)
I really wish I could have explored the Gangneung Currency Exhibition Hall and the Gangneung Municipal Museum too! But with other plans on the itinerary, I couldn't visit everything, which was a real shame.
Still, I like to think of it as saving some incredible discoveries for my next visit – a perfect excuse to come back! So, with a slightly heavy heart, I turned my steps away.
On our way back, we paused right in front of the impressive statue of Yulgok Yi I to snap some photos of the kids.
This spot is quite the popular photo zone, actually! When we first arrived, the line was just too long to get a shot, so we wisely waited until we were heading out to capture these memories.
And look! There are beautiful crape myrtle flowers here too.
This charming spot right at the entrance also makes for a fantastic photo zone!
It’s quite remarkable to think that, perhaps across the entire world, Shin Saimdang and Yulgok Yi I are the only mother and son duo to both be featured on a nation's currency!
While my packed itinerary meant I couldn't leisurely explore every corner, if you're planning a trip to Gangneung, Ojukheon is an absolute must-see!
I initially thought Ojukheon offered fantastic value with its affordable entrance fee, but realizing it also includes access to the Gangneung Currency Exhibition Hall, the Municipal Museum, and more, truly cemented its status as a premier tourist destination in Gangneung.
Being able to delve into the rich tapestry of Shin Saimdang and Yulgok Yi I's diverse writings and paintings, alongside experiencing traditional architectural styles with the children, made it an incredibly enriching and educational adventure for them (and us!)
Ojukheon House operates daily from 9 AM to 6 PM. Last admission is at 5 PM, one hour before closing time.
The admission fee for Ojukheon House is ~$2 for adults, ~$1 for youths and soldiers, and ~$1 for children. Visitors aged 65 and over can enter for free.
You can apply for cultural tourism guide services online through the integrated reservation website. Regular tours are conducted three times in the morning at 10 AM, 10:30 AM, and 11 AM, and five times in the afternoon at 2 PM, 2:30 PM, 3 PM, 3:30 PM, and 4 PM.
Within Ojukheon House, there is Munseongsa Shrine, which enshrines the portrait of Yulgok Yi I, and the Yulgok Memorial Hall, which displays Yulgok's writings and Shin Saimdang's relics. You can also see Ojuk, the actual black bamboo.
A free parking lot for Ojukheon visitors is operated directly in front of Ojukheon House. There are no separate parking fees.
