Gangneung Gilgamja Main Branch Review 2026: Worth the Wait?
Craving a unique Korean street food experience? Get the inside scoop on Gangneung Gilgamja's newly renovated main branch, a must-try potato snack in 2026!

🥔 Gangneung Gilgamja Review 🥔
Hey, fellow travelers! It’s your travel blogger here, ready to share another authentic Korean experience. When planning my trip to Gangneung, the Gilgamja (potato fries) was absolutely at the top of my must-try list!
I actually tried Gilgamja from a pop-up store once before, and honestly, I wasn't that impressed 😢.

However, I’d heard rumors that the main branch was a completely different story. So, during my recent 2026 trip to Gangneung, I made sure to check it out for myself!
I was curious about the new renovations, and I was pleasantly surprised. The waiting time was much shorter than I expected from other reviews, and the whole experience felt much more convenient.
From my weekday waiting experience to essential tips for your visit, I’ll share all the details!
The Renovated Gangneung Gilgamja🥔
What's New?

The Gangneung Gilgamja store has undergone quite a transformation!
They've expanded and relocated from their previous spot. The new location is on a larger street before you enter Gangneung Central Market, making it less crowded and much easier to access.

📍 Anbandegi by Gangneung Gilgamja (Cafe)
2nd floor, 16 Geumseong-ro, Gangneung-si, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, South Korea
📍 Gangneung Gilgamja (Main Store)
1st floor, Haein Building, 16 Geumseong-ro, Gangneung-si, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, South Korea
And here's another important detail! They've added a dedicated space where you can actually sit down and enjoy your Gilgamja. You can grab a seat on the benches right in front of the store, or if you prefer a more comfortable spot, head up to the Anbandegi by Gangneung Gilgamja cafe on the second floor.

While a one-drink minimum is required at the cafe, most drinks are only ~$1, which is a fantastic deal. I'd say that's a pretty sweet arrangement!
How to Order & My Weekday Waiting Experience

At the Gangneung Gilgamja main branch, there are separate lines for ordering and pickup.
You place your order at a kiosk, then take your receipt inside the store to pick up your freshly made order.
🥔 Cup Gilgamja ~$3
🥔 Sausage Gilgamja ~$3
📍 Gangneung Gilgamja Sauce Options
Buldak Mayo, Basil Mayo, Yangnyeom Chicken, Garlic Soy, Ketchup, Tteokbokki
Gilgamja Menu & Prices
There are only two main menu items! You can choose from six different sauces. Adding sauce directly onto your Gilgamja costs an extra ~$0, while getting it on the side costs ~$1. It's totally fine to skip the sauce if you prefer the classic taste!

I visited around 3 PM on a Wednesday and only waited about 10 minutes. The service was incredibly fast and efficient! 👍
I also spotted this adorable potato mascot inside the store – had to snap a pic! 🥔

Just show your receipt, and you’ll get your freshly fried Gilgamja right away!

Skewers are free, but a plastic packaging bag costs ~$0. I grabbed two skewers since I was planning to eat mine immediately.
My Top Gilgamja Sauce Recommendation!

While there are six delicious Gilgamja sauces to choose from, I personally found the Gilgamja to be even better without any sauce! The sauces are sweet, salty, and spicy – absolutely tasty – but if you want to truly savor the original crispy texture of Gilgamja, I highly recommend ordering it plain or with the sauce on the side.

I tried adding Buldak Mayo sauce, but because there was so much sauce, the potatoes quickly became soggy.
The hot potatoes mixed with the sauce resulted in a softer texture rather than the satisfying crispiness I craved.
Interestingly, when I ate it after it had cooled down a bit, the sauce had set, and the crispiness returned!
Would I Go Back for a 10-Minute Wait?

If you're visiting Gangneung, this is definitely a spot worth checking out at least once!
The prices are incredibly affordable, starting around ~$3, and the portion of potatoes is surprisingly generous. What they call a 'cup' Gilgamja felt more like a 'box' full!
It's a fantastic value snack at Gangneung Central Market, and I'd absolutely want to grab it again on my next visit to Gangneung! 🥔
