Hi everyone, I'm Bamggi!
I can't believe it's already been over six months since we got back from our honeymoon.
Since we traveled at the very end of the year, our options were a bit limited.
But because we wanted both that festive holiday vibe and a relaxing tropical escape,
we decided to split our honeymoon between New York and Cancun!
Since we were visiting multiple cities,
booking the flights got a little complicated...
How to book multi-city flights for a New York & Cancun honeymoon,
and my story of saving ~$768 on a Cancun resort through Trip.com,
plus essential tips and warnings for booking flights to Cancun!
I'm going to share it all with you in one go.

Experiencing two completely different winter vibes was so much fun! 🎄

1. New York & Cancun Honeymoon Flights: Prices & Booking Info
When we booked, platform, and price

First, let me share our honeymoon itinerary:
Dec 21 (Arrives Dec 21) | Incheon → New York |
Dec 29 | New York → Cancun |
Jan 4 (Arrives Jan 6) | Cancun → Incheon (via LA) |
Since we needed three separate flights, we had two options:
① Book an Incheon-New York round trip + a separate New York-Cancun round trip
② Book Incheon-New York-Cancun-Incheon all at once (= Multi-city)
We went with option ②, booking a multi-city flight.
What is a multi-city flight?
Instead of a simple point-to-point round trip,
it allows you to link multiple destinations in sequence
and book them all under one single ticket.
If you need to travel between three or more cities,
this is usually way more cost-effective!

Booking multi-city flights
This is the actual New York-Cancun honeymoon itinerary we booked last year.
We booked the long-haul flights with Asiana Airlines
and the short-haul flight with American Airlines.
The total price we paid for the Cancun flight was ~$1,793 per person.
We booked in August for our December trip,
and since it fell right over the peak Christmas and New Year holiday season, it was definitely on the pricier side!
2. How to Search Multi-City Flights on Trip.com
So, how do you actually book these multi-city flights?
I booked ours on Trip.com, and I'll walk you through the desktop version.
Since there are quite a few details to input, I highly recommend using the
PC web version over mobile for your first search.
*Tip: Sometimes the app offers exclusive mobile discounts, so definitely cross-check both!
STEP 1. Go to Trip.com → Select Flights
>> Go to Trip.com <<
STEP 2. In the search bar, click on 'Multi-City' (instead of Round-trip or One-way)

How to book multi-city flights
Once you click, you'll see a screen layout similar to the image above.
Enter your desired destinations and travel dates for each leg of your trip.
Choose the number of passengers and your preferred cabin class, then
hit that Search button!
STEP 3. Mix and match flights, keeping schedules and prices in mind

You will select flights for each leg one by one.
Since there are so many airline combinations,
you'll want to balance direct flights, total travel time, and overall price.

Once you select the final flight segment,
you'll see a 'View Details' button, and you can proceed with the booking.
Make sure to double-check everything as you go.
Just a heads-up: there are no direct flights from Cancun back to Incheon.
And let me tell you, layovers at US airports are... a whole journey in themselves (honestly, I have so much to say about this).
Long story short, we actually missed our connection and ended up staying an extra night in LA ^_^
Let me dive straight into the crucial warnings for Cancun flights 👇👇
3. Crucial Tips for Layovers in the US on the Way to Cancun
While booking multi-city flights all at once is incredibly convenient,
there are a few things you absolutely must double-check before hitting that final 'book' button!
Crucial warnings for booking flights to Cancun via the US:
✔️ ESTA is mandatory for US transit
Most travelers heading to Cancun from Korea will have a layover in the US.
Even if you are only transiting through the US, you absolutely need a US travel authorization (ESTA).
✔️ Double-check the baggage allowance for each separate airline

Since we were traveling long-term across two cities with completely opposite climates,
our group ended up bringing a total of 3 suitcases.
Just keep in mind that when flying from the US to Cancun,
checked baggage is usually limited to 1 bag per person!
They are super strict with carry-on baggage weight,
so make sure to check both the size and the weight! ⭐
✔️ Make sure your layover is super generous!
When you have a layover, even if it's within the same airport,
you often have to go through US immigration, claim your bags, and go through security check-in all over again.
Therefore, having at least a 4-to-5-hour layover is the safest bet.

The left and right are two different tickets!
When searching for flights, you'll see a screen like this on the final details page.
If you tap the highlighted yellow part on the left photo, the details on the right will pop up.
See how both of them show "Baggage claim and re-check-in required"?
This means you have to clear immigration, grab your luggage, and head back to check it in again.
And if you have to switch terminals, it takes even longer;

The most common layover hubs are
New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Dallas.
While New York and the two West Coast airports require bag recheck,
there are tickets with direct baggage transfer in Atlanta and Dallas.
Keep this in mind when booking!

Of course, there are exceptions, so please, please double-check!
Flights with seamless transfers
can sell out quickly,
so check the remaining seats for each schedule now!

I had a 5-hour layover in Los Angeles,
but my flight from Cancun was delayed by over 2.5 hours,
so I missed my connection and had to spend the night in LA ^_^

4. Why I Chose Trip.com = Saved ~$640 on My Cancun Resort
There are so many flight booking sites out there,
like Naver Flights, Skyscanner, Agoda, and more...
But the reason I booked through Trip.com
was because of the hotel discount coupon you get when you book a flight!

This is TRS Coral, where I stayed for 4 nights in Cancun.
It's an all-inclusive resort, and since I checked in on December 31st,
the rate was over ~$768 per night... 🫠

Can you see the ~$640 discount I got???
It says "Platinum Tier Special Deal,"
but Platinum is actually a very basic level that you can reach after just 3 bookings on Trip.com.

Usually, when you book a flight, you get a 20-30% discount on hotels.
Since Cancun all-inclusive resorts are already on the pricier side,
I ended up saving a whopping ~$640! 🤣🤣
