However, on this trip, we wanted to steer clear of the overly popular Cancun tours.
Instead, we opted for Rio Secreto, a relatively lesser-known but incredibly well-preserved natural wonder, a river truly hidden by the Mayan civilization.
Let me share my review of the truly wonderful Cancun tour, Rio Secreto!
Rio Secreto
Maya's Hidden River, Only Recently Discovered
Rio Secreto, one of Cancun's premier tours, has been open to the public for less than 15 years, making it a mysterious cave with exceptionally well-preserved nature.
Because it minimizes environmental impact, it's a Cancun activity🧗 that offers a private experience and the chance to create truly unique memories deep within the cave.

For your reference, Rio Secreto is located near Playa del Carmen, which is about an hour's drive from Cancun.
Important Notes for Rio Secreto
No inside photography, caution for claustrophobia, and more
Unlike typical Cancun tours, the Rio Secreto activity has a few important considerations.
1️⃣ No Electronic Devices Inside the Cave |
For nature preservation and safety reasons, electronic devices are prohibited inside. |
2️⃣ Entry Restrictions for Claustrophobia, etc. |
As the path is illuminated only by a small flashlight, some parts of the cave might be narrow or feel confining. |
3️⃣ No Sunscreen or Chemical Products |
Similarly, for environmental protection, chemical products like sunscreen and cosmetics are prohibited. |
While these many precautions might seem a bit cumbersome, thanks to them, we were able to witness **undamaged, wondrous nature**.
Personally, among all the tours I've ever experienced, this was a particularly memorable one because it's a nature exploration accessible only to a select few, not a typical tourist spot – a truly unforgettable tour!
Indeed, during our actual tour, one team member experienced claustrophobia and had to stop the tour.
So, if you're afraid of dark or confined spaces, I wouldn't recommend this tour.
Rio Secreto Review
A Beautiful Cave Hidden Away by the Gods
Because Rio Secreto is located near Playa del Carmen, it takes a bit of time to get there.
(I recall it being over an hour one-way.)
Just follow the signs and show your voucher upon arrival.
After listening to the explanations, filling out a **health questionnaire**, changing into swimsuits, and taking a rinse shower,
you'll put on the provided wetsuit, aqua shoes, and life vest, and then store your **electronic devices in the locker**.
You can use your own aqua shoes, and while a wetsuit isn't mandatory, it's recommended as the cave water can be surprisingly cool.
Some men surprisingly choose not to wear the wetsuit because they find it restrictive.
(I personally felt like I was suffocating because I'd gained too much weight!)
From this point on, internal photography is not allowed, so images from the official Rio Secreto website will be used!
Before entering the cave, you'll experience a **traditional Mayan ceremony**.
It's conducted to ask permission from the Aluxes, Mayan guardian spirits, for the cave exploration.
After receiving permission from the spirits, it's time to truly enter the cave!
The cave floor can be slippery, and because it's in its natural state, there might be sharp areas, so you need to proceed with caution.
Inside the cave, your hands are definitely not free, so it really seemed better not to bring any electronic devices.
Instead, a cameraman inside takes photos as you move and at various spots.
Inside the cave, you can see bats, and even tiny real shrimp living in the water.
I wondered what on earth these shrimp ate to survive in here, and it turns out they eat bat droppings!
Another fascinating thing was that the aquatic creatures here, including the shrimp, don't have any other colors.
Because it's pitch black without a flashlight, where you truly can't see anything, they don't need color, so they're just black or white.
And personally, the best experience was getting a taste of what it's like to be a cave diver by **navigating a narrow section of the cave**!
You pass through water that's almost chest-deep, in an area where the ceiling is only 2 meters high.
It was incredibly thrilling, and because it's an experience unique to Rio Secreto, I remember it being so much fun!
After about an hour and a half of incredible cave exploration, you'll emerge from a different exit.
With thousands of entrances and exits, it's mind-boggling to think this cave system actually stretches all the way to Guatemala!
Our guide even joked, 'Welcome to Guatemala!' as we emerged – a great way to lighten the mood after such an adventure! 🤣
Lunch After Our Rio Secreto Adventure
A lunch buffet that was surprisingly high quality!
Once our Rio Secreto tour wrapped up, we returned our gear and were handed fresh shower towels.
Time to change back into our clothes and head for some well-deserved lunch!
Before we even stepped inside, our guide gathered us all for a special toast with K'saben Tun, a traditional Mayan liquor!
It's got a kick like tequila, but honestly, it's surprisingly sweet and very palatable – a delightful treat!
If you fall in love with it, you can purchase the traditional liquor, and even sample other spirits! So if you're a fan of unique beverages, definitely take your time to taste and choose your favorite.
They only accept US dollars for the liquor, but the prices weren't as steep as I anticipated (around $30-$50).
Step further into the building, and you'll find a souvenir shop brimming with Rio Secreto merchandise and other cool mementos.
You can also purchase photos taken inside the cave here. It's $30 per shot, or $150 for the full set, which, to be frank, felt a bit pricey.
My sibling, however, opted to pass – no desire for bare-faced, makeup-free cave photos for them! 🤣
Once you've navigated through the souvenir shop, you'll finally arrive at the awaited lunch buffet!
Given how much time you spend in the water during the Rio Secreto tour in Cancun, it's no surprise you work up quite an appetite!

It's no secret I went back for seconds because it was so incredibly tasty! 😉
After your meal, step outside to a connected area, and you'll discover another cenote – but be warned, this one is home to crocodiles!
Instead of crocodiles, we were lucky enough to spot a slightly less intimidating (and much cuter!) iguana couple!
After our meal, the tour officially concluded!
While it's a bit of a shame that photography isn't allowed inside the cave,
what makes it truly special is that, unlike some more commercialized Cancun tours, this was a genuine, immersive exploration.
Personally, I feel choosing the Rio Secreto tour was one of the best decisions I made.

For nature conservation and safety reasons, the use of electronic devices is prohibited inside the Rio Secreto cave. Instead, an in-house cameraman will take photos during the tour and at specific locations. These photos can be purchased after the tour for $30 per photo, or $150 for the entire collection.
