Kokoro-ne (こころ音) in Narai-juku, Nagano, Japan,
Special Local Soba
(Toji Soba, Wasabi Soba)
A village that feels like stepping into an Edo period movie set,
I'm excited to introduce the lunch experience
I had in Narai-juku.
This is the local cuisine specialty restaurant 'Kokoro-ne kokoro-ne'.

What really grabbed my attention first was the visual of
Toji Soba, served in a shabu-shabu style.
Besides Toji Soba, there are many other menu options,
making it a restaurant I'd highly recommend
if you visit Narai-juku.

Exterior

Buildings from hundreds of years ago are preserved
even within Narai-juku street,
and this restaurant maintains the form of a traditional wooden house.

From the dark, weathered wooden pillars
and traditional lattice doors,
you can truly feel the essence of old Japan.
Interior

Stepping inside, you'll discover a tranquil and warm
wood-toned interior.
While it retains the charm of an old traditional house,
it's also impeccably neat and tidy.

Seating is primarily comfortable
table seats.
Everything was laid out in such a charming way.
We visited for lunch as a group of six, but
there wasn't a table for all six of us,
so we were seated separately at a table for four and a table for two.
What We Ordered
✔️ Wasabi Soba
✔️ Vegetable Tempura Set 1,500 yen
✔️ Toji Soba 1,700 yen
First up, the Wasabi Soba!
If you're only imagining wasabi paste,
you'll be surprised by its unique appearance!

Packed with fresh wasabi leaves,
it's a feast for the eyes right from the start.
I'd never even seen wasabi leaves before,
so I was super curious about how they'd taste.
Just like wasabi root,
the leaves offer a pungent yet fragrant kick that is
absolutely captivating.

That distinctive pungent kick,
that fragrant flavor of wasabi leaves that hits you in the nose,
combined with the chewy buckwheat noodles,
makes this a dish I absolutely recommend!

It's a sensation that tingles your nose,
yet finishes with an incredibly clean and artful taste.
Next up is the Toji Soba,
enjoyed warm, hot-pot style!

Its unique presentation
and the fun of dipping the noodles in a mini basket
made it a popular menu item!
We decided to give it a try too.

There was a certain joy in taking the soba noodles in their mini basket,
dipping them into the richly flavored, boiling broth,
lightly cooking them, and then fishing them out to eat.

The taste was incredibly wholesome! Haha.
With no artificial seasonings,
thanks to a broth brimming with various mushrooms and vegetables,
it felt warm and healthy all the way to my core.

The Vegetable Tempura Set
is a perfect recommendation for those who prefer familiar flavors.
It's a great way to experience the local ingredients of this area
with a taste you already know and love.

Overall,
it was a truly special local meal that was wholesome and not overly stimulating,
yet exceptionally unique.
