To protect its pristine ecosystem, Kamikochi completely bans
private vehicles. This means you need to plan ahead
and carefully map out your route and transportation options!

Even if you rent a car,
you can't drive directly into the park.
Instead, you’ll need to park at a designated lot nearby
and transfer to a shuttle bus or taxi to head inside.

✔️Where to Stay
We chose Takayama as our base camp
for our day trip to Kamikochi.
It's reasonably close and highly recommended!
🔽My Honest Review of a Wonderful Hotel in Takayama🔽
Kamikochi Weather
Because Kamikochi sits at a high altitude of 1,500m (4,921 ft),
it is typically more than 10°C (18°F) cooler than the lowlands.

On the day we visited, the lowlands were scorching hot,
hitting nearly 30°C (86°F).
But the moment we stepped foot in Kamikochi,
the temperature dropped so much it felt brisk. The temp difference is no joke!
You'll warm up quickly while trekking,
but as soon as you step into the shade or catch a breeze, it gets chilly fast.
That’s why dressing in light, easily removable layers
like a windbreaker or light jacket
is an absolute must!
Just tie it around your waist when you're warm,
and slip it back on when the temperature dips.

It’s a great way to check what other hikers are wearing before you head out! 😄
Recommended Trails & Trekking Times

The trails in Kamikochi
are beautifully maintained and very flat,
so you can easily hike them in comfortable sneakers.
The difficulty level doesn't vary much between trails,
so you can simply choose a route based on how much time you have.
Whichever of the two trails below you choose,
we highly recommend getting off the bus
at the "Taisho Pond (Taishoike)" stop
rather than going all the way to the final bus terminal.
Starting your walk from there is the absolute best way to experience it!
The trail from here, walking up toward Kappa Bridge...
The views are so much prettier, and it’s an absolute joy to walk!
✅ Recommended Route 1
✔️ Duration: Around 3 hours

Taisho Pond (Get Off) ➡️ Tashiro Wetland ➡️
Kappabashi Bridge ➡️ Kamikochi Bus Terminal

Highly recommended if you are traveling with parents or kids,
or if you want a light day-trip to explore the area!
Since it's on the shorter side, 3 hours is plenty of time
to snap beautiful photos and fully soak it all in.

✅ Recommended Route 2
✔️ Duration: Approx. 4 hours 30 mins
Taisho Pond (Get Off) ➡️ Tashiro Wetland ➡️
Kappabashi Bridge ➡️ Myojin Pond ➡️ Kamikochi Bus Terminal

This route takes you from Kappabashi Bridge to Myojin Pond
and loops back around.
Because you cross the bridge at Myojin Pond,
you can enjoy different scenery on the way there and back,
allowing you to experience Kamikochi to the absolute fullest.
This is the route we chose!

However, since there aren't many places to rest in between,
we recommend getting plenty of rest at Kappabashi Bridge
before setting off for Myojin Pond.

Kamikochi Food Hacks & Tips
As you trek along, you’re bound to get a little hungry.
Here is a super important insider tip!

There are restaurants (like Kamonjigoya) and snack stands
near Kappabashi Bridge and Myojin Pond inside Kamikochi.
However, because you are deep in the mountains, the prices are quite steep.
And during peak seasons, the lines
can get absolutely massive.
You might end up spending
your precious travel time
just waiting in line for a meal.

The night before we headed into Kamikochi,
we stopped by a nearby supermarket to pick up some bread, light snacks, and drinks
to pack in our bags beforehand.
This turned out to be an absolute lifesaver and a brilliant move!
Avoiding the restaurant waitlist hell,
and enjoying our snacks while soaking in the gorgeous views of Kamikochi
brought us so much happiness.

Unless you strictly want to have
a formal, sit-down lunch,
we highly recommend packing a picnic mat along with some pre-purchased bread or a bento box
and treating your meal like
a lovely, breezy outdoor picnic!
Must-Try Snacks
TROIS CINQ Apple Ice Cream / Apple Pie

While packing light snacks is a great idea,
the perfect way to wrap up your Kamikochi trek
is with a treat from the shops near Kappabashi Bridge.
Japan 〒389-2261 Niigata, Myoko, Tarumoto, 斑尾 高原八坊주
In particular, at "TROIS CINQ" right across Kappabashi Bridge,
they sell rich milk soft-serve,
refreshing apple ice cream,
and an incredible apple pie made from
Nagano Prefecture’s famous local apples.
It was absolutely the best sweet reward after a long trek! 🍦
What to Pack
📌 Trash Bags
Inside Kamikochi National Park,
there are absolutely no trash cans.
It is a strict rule that you must
take all your own trash back home with you,
so make sure to pack a small plastic bag in your backpack.

📌 Picnic Mat
There aren't as many benches or seats along the trail as you'd think,
so we highly recommend bringing a cheap sitting mat (like one from Daiso)
to lay out and relax.
📌 Bear Bell (Optional)
Since this is an area where wild bears can appear,
many hikers wear bear bells as a precaution.
The sound of the bell is surprisingly charming,
and hanging a little bear bell on your backpack
adds a cozy, simple kind of fun to the walk.

The souvenir shops sell all kinds of these bells,
so picking one up as a little keepsake would be a lovely idea.
Final Thoughts

Kamikochi is a place where you can truly immerse yourself
in Japan’s crisp mountain air and pristine, untouched nature!
The trails are flat and gentle, making it an absolute dream
for a family trip or a scenic getaway with your parents.

Just be sure to pack a light jacket since temperatures can drop,
bring along a few light snacks, and take your time
soaking in the breathtaking wonders of the great outdoors!
