Ambiance & Interior

The restaurant's interior exudes a calm and clean atmosphere. A major plus is the availability of private rooms, offering a more intimate dining experience compared to typical yakiniku establishments.
We were seated in a private room, and the absence of ambient noise made it perfect for conversations with our companions.

The seating features comfortable sofa tables, and since we had a reservation, everything was already set up for us.
You'll find wasabi sauce, a basic dipping sauce, Kokonomi's homemade sauce, pepper, salt, tongs, and aprons ready at your table.

Each table is equipped with a grill for you to cook your meat exactly how you like it. There's also a dedicated space to store your coats and belongings, which is a thoughtful touch.
It's always a concern that your clothes might absorb the smell of grilled meat, so having a separate storage area was incredibly convenient.

On a cool day like today, a warm hand towel is always a welcome gesture! 🩷
The Menu

At Kokonomi, you can order various cuts of premium beef à la carte or choose from several set menus that allow you to sample a range of exquisite parts.
I opted for the Mikumano Beef Assortment Set, a fantastic choice!

Mikumano Beef Assortment Set — ~$63 per person
This set includes a fresh salad, appetizers, the Mikumano Wagyu assortment, rice, and soup.
For those unfamiliar, Mikumano beef is a rare brand of wagyu produced in the Kumano region of Mie Prefecture, Japan. With an annual shipment of only about 90 heads, it's a truly exclusive beef that's not easily found even within Japan.
The Mikumano Beef Set Experience

Before diving into the main event, we were served a refreshing salad and light appetizers, including kimchi.
The salmon salad was a delightful start, and having kimchi alongside the beef was a perfect touch. When enjoying rich wagyu, having crisp, fresh side dishes to cleanse the palate is always appreciated, and the kimchi hit the spot.

Next, the star of the show arrived: the Mikumano Beef assortment. Arranged beautifully on a large platter, each cut varied in thickness and marbling, making for an exciting tasting journey.

What truly stood out was the ability to savor different textures and flavors from each distinct cut, not just a single taste!

You grill the meat yourself right at your table. I recommend cooking just two or three pieces at a time to enjoy them warm and fresh.
Start with the cuts that have less marbling. If you begin with the fattier, heavily marbled pieces, you might find yourself feeling full too quickly.

The leaner cuts, with a higher proportion of red meat, allowed the rich, distinctive beef flavor to truly shine. Their satisfying thickness offered a great bite, and they were perfect for alternating with the richer, fattier cuts.

The fattier cuts, with abundant marbling, were incredibly tender and literally melted in my mouth. Personally, I find these richly marbled, fatty cuts to be the most delicious.
Perhaps it's because this is a rare brand of beef with limited annual shipments, but it tasted significantly better than any beef I usually have!

Even within wagyu, the differences between cuts were quite noticeable, making it fun to compare them as we ate.
And of course, no beef meal is complete without rice! You can choose your rice portion size – small, medium, or large – when ordering. The meal felt complete and satisfying with both rice and soup included.

If you're looking to experience something truly special on your Tokyo trip, I highly recommend Yakiniku Kokonomi Ebisu.
Being able to taste rare Mikumano beef in various cuts, all within a quiet and relaxed private setting, made this restaurant incredibly appealing.☺️
If your itinerary includes Shibuya, Daikanyama, or Nakameguro, consider pairing a visit to Kokonomi Ebisu for an unforgettable dinner experience.
