Junpei is a renowned restaurant in Biei, a charming town near Sapporo!
Whether you're exploring Biei on a guided bus tour or venturing out on your own, many travelers make a point to stop here.
Let's dive into the **menu, prices, and my personal review of the famous Ebitendon** at Sapporo's Junpei restaurant.
1. Junpei Restaurant Location in Biei

📌 **Junpei Restaurant Address**
You'll find Junpei about an **8-10 minute walk from JR Biei Station**.
While it's not a huge distance, it might feel a bit far if you're on a tight schedule with a tour!
📌 **Operating Hours**
11:00 AM to 3:00 PM (or until sold out, closed Mondays)
*As of late 2026, Junpei typically **does not accept reservations from individual tourists**; it's generally accessible via organized tours.
(However, there's also JUN-DOG, Junpei's cafeteria-style spot right next to JR Biei Station, where you can grab a bento box for takeout.)

On my visit in late 2025, I had a reservation, and even then, I waited about 5 minutes!
2. Junpei Restaurant Menu & Prices

📌 **Junpei Menu & Prices**
Ebitendon (3 shrimp) ~$10
Ebitendon (4 shrimp) ~$11
Shrimp Tempura + Curry ~$13
While Ebitendon (shrimp tempura rice bowl) is their most famous dish, Junpei offers a surprisingly diverse menu.
You'll find everything from pork cutlets (tonkatsu) to various curry dishes.
The price of the Ebitendon varies depending on how many shrimp tempura you choose.

Draft Beer ~$4
Coca-Cola ~$4
Oolong Tea ~$4
They also offer beverages like draft beer, soft drinks, coffee, and even ice cream.

The restaurant isn't as large as you might expect, and it can get quite bustling. 😭😭
It has a bit of a family-restaurant vibe mixed with the typical feel of an eatery in rural Japan.
If you're visiting on a tour and want to save time, grabbing takeout from JUN-DOG might be a great alternative.
3. Ebitendon Review

I ordered the Ebitendon with three shrimp for ~$10, and the food arrived incredibly fast, within about 5 minutes of ordering.
The simple set included the Ebitendon, a small salad, and miso soup.

Alongside the Ebitendon, you get a side of pickled mustard greens.
At first, I thought it might be wasabi or pickled plum, but it turned out to be a zesty Japanese-style pickled mustard.
They say it’s a great palate cleanser to cut through the rich, sweet, and savory sauce of the shrimp tempura.
(Though, I just ate my Ebitendon straight!)

As expected from an Ebitendon specialist, each shrimp is genuinely large!
I wondered if three shrimp would be enough, but it was surprisingly filling.
(If you're planning to snack on other delicious street food during your tour, three shrimp is probably just right.)
The tempura batter was incredibly crispy.

This was easily one of the best shrimp tempura dishes I've ever had!
It's clear why Junpei is so famous. Often, popular spots can be a letdown, but Junpei definitely lives up to its reputation.
The shrimp were plump, and the sauce was perfectly balanced, pairing wonderfully with the rice.
While I'm not sure if I'd go through the trouble of a difficult reservation again, trying it as a bento box during a tour is certainly worthwhile.

Just a heads-up: Junpei is a **cash-only establishment**.
Credit cards are not accepted, so make sure to bring enough cash if you plan to visit.
Many restaurants in Japan still operate on a cash-only basis, so it's always a good idea to carry around ~$60-70 USD in cash per person when traveling to Japan for convenience.

Given its distance from Biei Station, after finishing our meal, we quickly walked back towards the station to explore.
On snowy days, or when there's heavy snow accumulation, even a short walk can be tiring 😥😥. So, considering JUN-DOG near Biei Station for a quick meal is also a smart choice.
You can choose based on the weather conditions!
