A Look Inside

As you can see, the dining room was completely full during peak hours.
We got lucky and arrived just before the main lunch rush, so we were seated immediately. By the time we finished and walked out, there was a steady queue forming outside.

Since it is located inside a major shopping mall, the space is cozy and intimate.
The tables are arranged relatively close to each other, but the lively atmosphere and chatter make it feel like a classic local diner rather than a cramped space.

The menu is incredibly diverse and features crowd-pleasing dishes, which explains why you see so many multi-generational families dining here together.

The tables and overall decor are remarkably clean and well-maintained.
Exploring the Nyonya Menu

First time trying Peranakan food? Here is a quick history lesson: Nyonya (or Peranakan) culture originated from the descendants of Chinese immigrants who settled in Malaysia and Singapore and married local Malays. "Baba" refers to the men, while "Nyonya" refers to the women.
Their culinary tradition blends Chinese cooking techniques with aromatic Malay ingredients and spices, creating a unique flavor profile that is both complex and incredibly comforting.
The page above showcases their most popular signature dishes.

The menu is practically a book, complete with an introduction to Peranakan heritage on the very first page. To keep things simple, we just photographed the specific dishes we decided to order.

We ended up selecting three dishes and a refreshing drink to share.
From the menu options, we picked the classic appetizer Pie Tee (11.50 MYR / ~$2.60 USD) and the Nyonya Sweet & Sour Fish Rice (18.90 MYR / ~$4.30 USD).

We also ordered the Black Pepper Squid (22.90 MYR / ~$5.20 USD) and an Iced Lemon Tea (6.90 MYR / ~$1.50 USD) to wash it all down.
Because this restaurant is inside a modern shopping mall, the prices are slightly higher than what you would find at a street-side hawker stall. Additionally, there is a 10% service charge added to the final bill, which is standard for sit-down restaurants in Malaysia.

Ordering is super straightforward: simply write down the item numbers and quantities on the provided order slip using the pencil, then press the call button on your table to hand it to the server.

The staff will bring back a printed receipt alongside your handwritten slip to confirm your order. Keep this on your table and present it at the register when you are ready to pay.
Our Taste Test: Honest Food Review

Our feast arrived! While the sweet and sour fish and black pepper squid felt like familiar, comforting classics, we were most excited to try the Pie Tee, which was a brand-new dish for us.

✅ Pie Tee (Top Recommendation!)
These are delicate, top-hat-shaped pastry cups filled with a savory mixture of thinly shredded vegetables like jicama and carrots. They are topped with fresh cilantro (which my husband loved, though I passed mine over to him!).

They offer the perfect balance of sweet, savory, and mild spice, all wrapped in an incredibly crispy shell. The spice level is very mild—similar to a sweet chili sauce—making it perfectly suitable for kids.
This was easily the highlight of our meal. Make sure to order a plate of these alongside your main dishes!

✅ Black Pepper Squid
A classic stir-fry of tender squid and crisp vegetables tossed in a robust black pepper sauce.
Squid can easily turn rubbery if overcooked, but this was perfectly tender with a satisfying bite. The sauce is rich and savory—absolutely perfect for spooning over a bowl of warm white rice.

✅ Nyonya Sweet & Sour Fish Rice
The sweet and sour flavor profile here is very similar to the classic Cantonese style. While most restaurants serve this with pork or chicken, we wanted to try the fish version for a change.

It came with generous, thick chunks of crispy fried fish tossed with fresh vegetables. The sweet-tangy sauce is incredibly approachable and a great option for anyone who prefers milder flavors.

Underneath the crispy crackers, the dish also includes fresh shrimp, a hard-boiled egg, and a side of spicy sambal sauce, adding that signature Nyonya kick to the meal.
The Verdict: Is It Worth It?

Overall, the dishes at The Little Nyonya Cuisine offer incredibly approachable, comforting flavors that will satisfy both adventurous foodies and picky eaters alike.
Dining inside Gurney Plaza means you get to enjoy your meal in a clean, air-conditioned, and comfortable environment—a perfect break from the Penang heat. The fact that locals are willing to wait in line here tells you everything you need to know about the quality.
While it is pricier than street-side hawker stalls, our entire meal came out to around ~$14 USD (including the service charge), which is incredibly reasonable for a sit-down meal in a premium mall.
If you find yourself shopping or exploring around Gurney Drive in 2026, make sure to stop by and treat yourself to some delicious Peranakan comfort food!
