Seamless Domestic Transfers
Hey there, fellow adventurers!
Nomad Salmi here, your FIRE travel blogger and guide to unlocking incredible destinations. 😊
Dreaming of Penang's vibrant streets and delicious food? To reach this Malaysian gem, you'll likely need to **transfer to a domestic flight at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL)**.

Typically, your international flight to Kuala Lumpur will take around 6 hours, followed by another 1-hour flight from KUL to Penang.
However, with layovers and transit times, it's wise to allocate a full day for travel. KUL Airport can feel a bit overwhelming, and I remember finding the transfer process a little confusing at first. But trust me, it's simpler than it seems – just follow my lead! 🙋🏻♀️
**Please note: This guide specifically covers transfers with Malaysia Airlines.** If you're flying with a different carrier, your process might vary slightly.

Once you land in Kuala Lumpur and deplane, your first step is to **check the flight information screens for your connecting gate**. Gates can change unexpectedly, and delays happen, so keep an eye on these screens throughout your transit.

I noticed Malaysia Airlines had sent me a text message with updated information. It's super convenient that they also send email notifications and updates via their airline app. This really helped, as my domestic flight actually had a delay, and both the departure time and gate changed once.

If you have a longer layover, you can take the moving walkways and explore the **duty-free shops**. Because of our flight delay, we had some extra time and enjoyed browsing the stores. Of course, if your connection is tight, you'll want to head straight to your gate!

If you're flying in with Malaysia Airlines and connecting to Penang, you'll need to **head towards Gate A**.

To reach Gate A, you'll need to **take a shuttle bus to a different terminal building**. You can **board the shuttle bus at Gate C5**.

Don't forget to keep checking those gate announcements as you go!

You'll see signs for C1, C3, and C5 all pointing in one direction. As you walk, you might spot C1 and C3 before C5 appears. Don't worry, you're on the right track! Just **keep walking straight**, and you'll eventually find **C5 at the end of the concourse**.

You'll likely see a line of people waiting. Don't fret about a long wait; buses arrive continuously, so you **won't have to wait long before boarding** and moving on.

The distance is a bit further than you might expect, so the **shuttle ride takes about 5 minutes**.

Once you arrive, follow the signs that say "All Other Passports."

You'll go up one level and see people moving along a path. Don't follow them just yet! You need to **go up one more level**.

Take the escalator up one more floor.

Since you're transferring to a domestic flight, you'll need to **clear immigration beforehand**. Don't worry, there usually aren't many people at this immigration point, so it should be a quick process!

As you follow the signs for **Gate A**, you'll see directions for immigration specifically for domestic departures.

The process is similar to standard immigration: first, your bags will be screened, then your passport and boarding pass will be checked and stamped. If you've already completed your Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) online, the process will be even faster!
For a detailed guide on filling out the MDAC, check out this post:
Once immigration is complete, you'll find a small duty-free area. Feel free to browse around while you wait for your next flight!
