Prague, Czech Republic, is one of those cities I’ve loved so much, I’ve visited it twice. And on my second trip to this magical city, what I was most looking forward to wasn’t a famous landmark, but actually a pint of Dark Kozel beer.

On my first visit, I’d casually tried a Dark Kozel and was so blown away by its flavor that I remember thinking, “I need to come back to Prague just for this beer!”

So, for my return trip, I made it a mission to find the best place to enjoy Kozel. That’s when I discovered Kozelovna, an official Kozel branch located just a 3-minute walk from Charles Bridge. It immediately went onto my must-do itinerary.

1. Location & Operating Hours

Kozelovna is perfectly situated for tourists, just a short 3-minute walk from Charles Bridge. It’s an ideal spot to unwind after exploring Charles Bridge or the Old Town Square.

We visited around 8:00 PM on a Saturday, and the place was bustling! We couldn't get in immediately and had to wait for about 10 minutes.

Even though there was a crowd, the turnover was quite quick, so we didn't have to wait too long.

As evening approaches in Prague, many locals and tourists head out for a beer, so if you plan to visit in the evening, it’s a good idea to arrive a bit earlier to avoid peak wait times.

Our hotel, the Bologna Hotel, was conveniently located close to both Charles Bridge and Kozelovna. It was just an 8-minute stroll from Kozelovna, which made for a lovely walk along the Vltava River after enjoying our beers.

2. Inside the Pub

Stepping inside, I was surprised by how much larger the space felt than I expected.

It perfectly captured that classic Czech pub ambiance – not too loud, but with a lively, welcoming buzz that was perfect for enjoying a beer.

What truly impressed me was Kozelovna's obvious dedication to beer.

The shelves lined with countless beer mugs and the impressive Kozel draft beer machines (a rare sight outside of the Czech Republic!) built up my anticipation while waiting for our order.

It was also interesting to see that Kozel offered Dark, Light, and even a Half-and-Half (mixed) option.

3. Menu Highlights

Kozelovna isn’t just about the beer; their food menu is incredibly diverse.

They offer classic Czech traditional dishes, a wide array of small plates perfect for pairing with beer, and even a dedicated vegetarian menu.

We had already eaten dinner, so we only ordered some side dishes for our second round. Popular main dishes include Koleno (pork knuckle), Goulash, and Beef Tartare, along with sweet potato fries.

4. Our Dining Experience

Here’s what we ordered:

✔️Sweet Potato Fries: 110 CZK

✔️Small Dark Kozel: 70 CZK

✔️Medium Light Kozel: 80 CZK

The total came to 260 CZK, which is approximately ~$14.

We ordered one Light Kozel and one Dark Kozel, accompanied by sweet potato fries.

It was great that you could just order side dishes, making it easy to pop in for a casual beer without feeling obligated to have a full meal!

The sweet potato fries were long and thin, unlike the chunkier sweet potato fries often found in the US, which was a unique twist.

The sweet and savory combination paired well with the beer, though personally, I wouldn't go back just for this specific side dish.

However, the Dark Kozel was so incredibly delicious that the beer alone made the visit completely worthwhile.

Typically, dark beers bring to mind heavy, bitter flavors, but Dark Kozel is remarkably smooth, with a subtle caramel aroma and a hint of sweetness.

It's completely different from the bottled or canned Dark Kozel you might find elsewhere, making it enjoyable even for those who typically don't prefer dark beers.

My husband's Light Kozel was also incredibly smooth and flavorful!

The Czech Republic boasts the world's highest per capita beer consumption, with beer deeply woven into daily life, which means their draft beer is exceptionally fresh and delicious.

Looking back at these photos now, I wish I had enjoyed one more Kozel while I was in Prague...

I still wonder how they manage to make their beer so incredibly smooth.

While Prague offers many atmospheric pubs, if you’re keen on experiencing a truly authentic Dark Kozel, a visit to Kozelovna, the official Kozel branch, is absolutely worth it.
