Just off the coast of Kaohsiung, Taiwan, lies a beautiful, narrow barrier island accessible by a short boat ride: Cijin Island.
Taking a ferry mid-vacation always adds a wonderful sense of adventure to your trip.
Because Cijin Island is elongated, it is the absolute perfect place to rent an electric bike
and cruise along the coastal roads for a refreshing change of pace.
Here is your complete 2026 guide on how to take the ferry to Cijin Island from Kaohsiung,
as well as electric bike rental prices once you arrive.

1. Gushan Ferry Pier

To reach Cijin Island from the city center,
you'll need to catch a ferry. While there are a few different ferry terminals,
the shortest route and the most popular choice for travelers is
Gushan Ferry Pier.
You can check the exact location via the link below.

Our Kaohsiung itinerary went exactly like this:
Explore the Takao British Consulate,
grab some famous mango shaved ice near the pier,
and then head straight to Cijin Island.
Gushan Ferry Pier is incredibly convenient—
just a 10-minute walk from the consulate
and a 1-minute walk from Hai Zhi Bing (a legendary shaved ice spot).
Grouping these together makes for a flawless half-day trip.

When you arrive at the terminal entrance, you'll notice
two separate queues, as shown in the picture.
Don't make a rookie mistake! These outside lines are exclusively for scooters and motorcycles.
If you are a pedestrian, bypass these lines
and head directly inside the building.

Cijin Island Ferry Fares
Adults: 30 NTD (~$1)
Students: 25 NTD (~$0.80)
Children/Seniors/Disabled: 15 NTD (~$0.50)
At roughly $1 for a one-way adult ticket,
this is an incredibly budget-friendly excursion!

You can easily pay your fare using Taiwan's transit cards—
EasyCard or iPASS.
It's super convenient since you don't have to fumble for cash.
EasyCards are an absolute must-have in Taiwan.
Beyond buses and the MRT, you can use them at convenience stores, Watsons, and major cafe chains.
Plus, they never expire, so you can save them for your next trip!

🛳️ Ferry Operating Hours
⏱️ 5:00 AM ~ 2:00 AM
With the first boat leaving at 5:00 AM
and the last returning at 2:00 AM the following morning,
you really don't have to worry about getting stranded.
The ride from Gushan Ferry Pier to Cijin Island takes
only about 6 minutes.
Ferries run roughly every 10 minutes,
though intervals get slightly longer after midnight.

The ferries have two decks.
The first floor is reserved for scooters and cyclists,
while foot passengers head up to the second floor.
The open-air design on the second floor means you're shaded from the sun
but still get a fantastic, unobstructed ocean breeze since there are no glass windows.

The harbor views on the way over are absolutely stunning
and instantly put you in a relaxed, vacation state of mind.

Upon arriving at Cijin Island,
make sure to stick to the designated pedestrian exit path
to avoid dodging the swarm of disembarking scooters!

3. Cijin Island Bike Rentals

The moment you step off the ferry,
you'll be greeted by dozens of rental shops offering electric bikes and pedal carts.
Since we had a group of five, we hunted down a shop
that offered larger 5-to-6-passenger electric bikes.
While 4-seaters are everywhere, 6-seaters are a bit rarer,
which actually made choosing a shop pretty easy!

The staff will also explain what to do in case the bike breaks down on the road.

6-Seater Electric Bike Rental Fee
800 NTD (~$25)
It seemed a bit pricey at first, but split among five people,
it came out to just around $5 per person.
Important note: You must leave an ID as a deposit, so don't forget to bring your passport!
They'll walk you through the controls and your return time.
The bikes are incredibly easy to operate, so even if you don't have
much driving experience, you'll be totally fine.

Our 6-seater bike was styled like a
cute little train.
Because the wheels were small relative to the cart's size,
the ride was definitely on the bumpy side!
But cruising through the breezy weather with beautiful coastal views
made every jolt part of the fun.

Here’s a quick peek at the driver's seat!
