Carrefour: Local's Recommended Shopping List
When you travel to Taiwan, the most popular place for souvenirs or gifts is
Carrefour.
Similar to major hypermarkets,
they have a wide variety of items, from daily necessities to snacks.
On my last trip to Taiwan,
I visited with a local Taiwanese friend.
It was definitely helpful to go with a local friend,
as I could hear their recommendations and reasons why.
I'll share my Carrefour shopping list review from my visit!

This Carrefour location in Kaohsiung city center is on the larger side,
and it's a branch that also has an IKEA next to it.
Inside Carrefour, there's a hotpot restaurant called 'Shi Er Guo',
and because the wait was long, I put our names down and visited the store while waiting.
I remember the Taipei Carrefour being quite crowded,
but the Kaohsiung Carrefour was quieter than I expected.
Though the 'hotpot' restaurant itself was packed with people, haha.
Daily Necessities
Darlie toothpaste is bought so frequently by Koreans that
it's displayed in large quantities in a prominent spot.
I love its refreshing feel and great value for money,
and it's my favorite toothpaste because of its large size too.
However, it's said to be a bit strong for children,
so keep that in mind, and it's also highly recommended as individual gifts!
This is a shampoo that my local friend recommended as a souvenir.
They said it's a good value-for-money shampoo widely used in Taiwan.
While there are many good shampoos available back home,
if you want something to remember your trip by, this is a shampoo worth buying as a memento.
All the small sizes were sold out.
My Taiwanese local friend also recommended this shampoo,
and it came in various scents.
However, these shampoos usually come in large sizes,
so you'll need to consider your luggage weight before purchasing.
This is 'Snuggle' fabric freshener, which is great for hanging as an air freshener or putting in drawers.
This is already very popular among Korean travelers,
and various types were available at the display stand.
My friend helped me translate, and I learned that
the Snuggle product with the bus on the right is a new arrival.
They said the scent is inspired by famous natural attractions in Taiwan,
so if you see it, give it a try.
The reason why Snuggle air fresheners can be a hit or miss is that
the scent fades quickly.
Personally, after using it, I find the scent lasts just right.
I'd definitely repurchase it as a Taiwan travel souvenir!
Food Items
Tea, Snacks, Instant Noodles, etc.
This is the Oolong tea I bought, recommended by my friend.
The packaging was lovely, but more importantly, because this is such a great production region,
they confidently recommended that the oolong tea would be delicious too.
It's comparable to how Boseong Green Tea is a renowned specialty in Korea – a sign of top quality from its region.
If I hadn't gone with my friend, I probably wouldn't have known where these came from,
and would have just picked up anything. Having them along was incredibly helpful for shopping!
This is the oolong tea that's at the top of my Carrefour shopping list recommendations.
It comes in a generous pouch, so you get plenty without any bulky packaging to worry about.
What I especially love is how it brews so subtly yet richly when I drink it at home,
and the flavor and aroma are just wonderful, making me want to brew it again and again.
It's about ~$7 for 20 tea bags.
If you're hunting for an oolong tea that offers even better value for money,
there's also this option, which is a massive value pack with 100 tea bags.
Personally, I feel that when you buy oolong tea in Taiwan,
it's pretty much a foolproof souvenir that always hits the mark.
Many travelers also stock up on nougat crackers at Carrefour.
They're not necessarily 'gourmet,' but they're absolutely perfect for a light, delicious snack, which is why I recommend them.
Given that Taiwan is the land of nougat crackers, you'll find an amazing variety at Carrefour.
The ones sold at Carrefour are mass-produced,
so they might not be on the same artisanal level as those from a specialty bakery, but they're definitely worth a try!
I find them perfect for just grabbing one here and there at home with a cup of coffee or tea,
they're so easy to just pull out and enjoy.
Especially the nougat crackers on the right
come in individual packages, making them super convenient for sharing as office snacks or gifts!
Here's a Carrefour nougat cracker that comes with my personal seal of approval,
and I'd love to recommend them as a fantastic souvenir gift option.
Not only did I bring these back to enjoy myself,
but the packaging is also quite lovely, making them perfect for gifting.
My local Taiwanese friend confidently recommended these,
and once I tried them back home, I totally understood why!
They have a satisfyingly chewy, substantial texture, almost like marshmallows,
with a hint of strawberry flavor, and that wonderfully chewy biscuit texture is just superb!
If you love a good chewy, sweet, and tangy treat, I wholeheartedly recommend these!
Lastly, as I was walking by, I discovered this impressive cup noodle display.
I actually hadn't planned on buying any cup noodles, but thanks to my friend's recommendation,
I ended up purchasing this Taiwanese cup noodle.
I tried it back home, and it reminded me of a clear, savory broth, much like Korea's Sarigomtang (a popular clear beef bone broth noodle soup),
making it a wonderful noodle dish to enjoy as a light, clear broth.
Since it's also a highly beloved cup noodle among locals in Taiwan,
I think it would make a great little souvenir to bring back and try!
Drinks & Spirits
When you're visiting Taiwan, picking up some local Taiwanese beer is a must, right? Haha!
You'll want to keep your luggage weight in mind when buying,
but I still brought back some Taiwan Beer as a little memento of my trip.
Taiwanese beer tends to have a slightly milder taste,
so if you prefer lighter, refreshing brews, you'll probably enjoy it!
Turns out, the pineapple beer was a huge hit back home!
My friend recommended it, so I decided to pick some up.
Even though I'm usually not a big fan of fruit beers, I found myself enjoying this while watching TV at night.
It was so refreshing and light. :)
It might even be better than some of the more 'ambiguous' Taiwanese beers out there!
So, that wraps up my review of the souvenirs I bought at Carrefour in Kaohsiung
during my Taiwan trip today.
It's definitely true that having a local Taiwanese friend with you makes a huge difference
when picking out products.
Personally, the snacks and oolong tea, especially, were spot on with my taste
thanks to my friend's recommendations.
The Carrefour branch I visited had so many great items,
so if you're ever in the area, definitely give it a try for your souvenir shopping!
