Lao Chiang in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, first opened its doors in 1953,

making it a charming little restaurant that's over 70 years old.

My friend mentioned that in Taiwan, there's a lovely culture of

eating breakfast out, and 'Lao Chiang' was the fantastic spot they took me to! :)

I personally loved this Taiwanese breakfast experience so much

that I'd absolutely revisit it on my next Kaohsiung adventure.

Funnily enough, I had actually already marked this place down to visit,

so it was a delightful coincidence that my friend chose the same spot! Haha!

Formosa Boulevard Station

Lao Chiang is conveniently located at MRT 'Formosa Boulevard Station'.

It's just one stop away from Kaohsiung Station, where my accommodation was.

Did you know Formosa Boulevard Station has been ranked as the

second most beautiful subway station in the world? It truly lives up to its reputation, so of course, I had to snap a commemorative photo!

I never realized before, but Taiwan certainly has a beautiful aesthetic!

Just stepping out of the subway station,

the unique and captivating atmosphere of Kaohsiung immediately captured my eye.

Lao Chiang was incredibly close to MRT Formosa Boulevard Station!

It felt like I arrived at Lao Chiang in less than a 5-minute walk.

Even though it was already past 10 AM, this spot was uniquely bustling

and packed with people!

Interior

The interior stretched out in an L-shape, giving it a surprisingly spacious feel.

I'd heard there could be a wait, but since the menu primarily consists of

'danbing' and other quick, simple dishes, seats opened up quite fast.

Lao Chiang is a popular Taiwanese breakfast spot that draws not only travelers but also

plenty of locals, making it a truly authentic experience.

Just a heads-up: Danbing is only served until 3 PM,

and there are occasional reviews mentioning it being sold out, so keep that in mind!

Ordering

You simply need to join the queue to place your order,

and wow, there were even more people than I expected on the day I visited!

But don't worry, the staff here are incredibly efficient and skilled,

so they managed the orders quickly and seamlessly.

On one side, popular menu items were already pre-packaged

and ready for immediate grab-and-go!

The place seemed bustling the entire time, which just shows how popular it is with the locals.

Friend 1 was Taiwanese, and Friend 2 was Korean. We were chatting in English, but they understood some Korean midway through and immediately gave us a Korean menu.

Black tea starts from around ~$1, and other meal menus are up to around ~$2, making it a fantastic value for money meal!

Oh! Lao Jiang is also famous for its nougat crackers, so it's a perfect idea to pick some up when you're here! :)

The four of us ordered quite a few things, including milk tea, iced oolong tea, and Danbing, but the total only came out to 280 NTD!

After you order, they'll give you a number tag. They walk around calling out names, but don't fret if you can't understand them – just show your number tag, and you'll get your order right away.

Danbing (Taiwanese Omelet)

Danbing is a quintessential Taiwanese-style omelet, a delightful dish crafted from a thin pancake of egg and flour batter.

The price varies depending on the delicious toppings you choose. You can pick from classics like ham, cheese, tuna, and so much more.

Dipping sauces are also available, and you can help yourself from the self-service station.

We ordered a delicious spread, including ham, tuna, and corn fillings.

It's genuinely much tastier when dipped in sauce, so whatever you do, don't forget to try it that way!

Honestly, if my Taiwanese friend hadn't shared this tip, I would've just eaten them plain and missed out! Haha.

We also ordered the milk tea and iced oolong tea.

The milk tea here isn't the syrupy sweet flavor common in Korea; instead, it offers the delightful, slightly bitter notes of black tea with just a whisper of sweetness.

Personally, this milk tea was absolutely delicious. While it might not be for everyone if you're accustomed to the Korean style of sweetness, for my taste buds, it was an unforgettable experience!

And make sure to try the iced oolong tea too! It beautifully balances any richness and is a truly perfect companion to Danbing.
