Cijin Island Kaohsiung Guide 2026: Ferry & Bike Rental

I didn't make it here during my 2018 Kaohsiung trip, but today

I'm finally introducing the amazing Cijin Island, which I visited for the very first time!!

It's a gorgeous resort-like destination where you can catch those tropical,

Southeast Asian vibes right in the middle of your Kaohsiung adventure.

Cijin Island is a long, slender island stretching along the west side of Kaohsiung.

While the southern tip is connected to the mainland by a bridge,

the northern part is most easily reached by taking a quick ferry ride.

I headed over to the nearby Gushan Ferry Pier

after visiting the Former British Consulate,

but there’s also a ferry that runs from Zhanerku (KW2 Warehouse).

Since the Zhanerku side is a bit more modern and larger,

booking a discounted ticket on Klook below

Anyway, I made my way to the Gushan Ferry Pier!

between Gushan and Cijin Island.

Except for the very early morning and late night,

they run every 5 to 10 minutes,

so there’s absolutely no need to stress about rushing to catch a specific time.

You can also just tap your EasyCard (30 TWD / ~$1)

and there are separate fees for scooters and bicycles shown below.

I was actually wondering how they charge when

multiple people ride on a single scooter,

and seeing the exact pricing breakdown cracked me up! lol

Just like riding the MRT,

you simply tap your EasyCard at the turnstile and walk right in.

I bet this place gets packed with long queues

during peak hours,

but it was super quiet when I visited.

Maybe it's because the ferries run so frequently...

This is what the ferry looks like!

It's not some fancy cruise ship, just a very standard, practical ferry.

It's a little weathered, haha,

but since the ride is barely 15 minutes,

it really doesn't matter at all...

The bottom deck is packed with scooters and bicycles, so

it's definitely much more comfortable for passengers to head upstairs.

The photo above was taken on my way back to downtown Kaohsiung

when I was too lazy to climb upstairs,

so I just chilled on the first floor...

This is the neighborhood near the British Consulate.

The colorful building facades reminded me of

Murano Island in Italy—

so cute and picturesque that I just had to snap a photo! *_*

While there are buses on Cijin Island, they don't

run along the coastline, which is why renting

an electric bicycle is the way to go.

As soon as you step off the ferry,

you'll see tons of electric bike rental shops lined up!

The price was 500 TWD (~$14) for a 2-person bike

for 3 to 4 hours. It's not dirt cheap,

but since you can cruise all the way down the beautiful coastal road,

I highly recommend renting one! 👍

When you rent one, they give you a map showing how to get around

and where you are allowed to ride.

But since I was on a solo trip,

I had to just suck it up and walk everywhere...

hahahahahahahaha

I walked SO much that day, oh my gosh! Lol 😂

Honestly, the sightseeing route is pretty much set.

The photo on the right is the coral reef cliff

that you see right after passing through the Cijin Tunnel.

And this is the Cijin Tunnel itself! Haha

Taiwan has a lot of mountainous terrain,

so you see quite a few tunnels like this.

The Kaohsiung Lighthouse is nearby too,

which is famous for its stunning sunset views.

But since I heard it involves a pretty steep hike up,

I decided to boldly skip it!

Instead, I walked along the coast like crazy.

I just love the ocean so much!!!

Just keep an eye out, though—

watch out for all the electric bikes zipping past! ><

I spotted a glamping site right by the beach.

It looked like it would be so much fun

to visit with a group of friends! ㅎ_ㅎ

Since you can just walk along the water the whole time,

I definitely got my absolute fill of beautiful ocean views!!!

On my way, I came across a little plaza market

that felt like a mini night market.

I grabbed a crab stick snack to refuel a bit...

And now, to wrap up the final night of my Taiwan trip,

I headed off to catch the sunset!!!

The best sunset spots on Cijin Island

seem to be either the Kaohsiung Lighthouse or just along the beach.

I wanted to enjoy some cool beach vibes, so I headed to a beachside sunset bar!

If you walk past the bustling Cijin Old Street market

and head out toward the beach,

it's super easy to find!

They run a special "Sunset Hour"

instead of a regular Happy Hour right around sunset!

If you're only having one drink, it's better to just order a single glass à la carte.

The tacos were not good. Do not order them.

Hahahahahahaha

Seriously, the tortilla felt like a sheet of paper!

But hey, the sunset itself was absolutely stunning!

And if you **book in advance**, you can secure a much better spot...

Missed the sunset on New Year's Eve,

but caught this gorgeous view a few days later haha

I didn't capture any photos, but in that beautiful ocean,

you can actually go surfing..!!

If I had known earlier, I might have skipped Kenting altogether..​

Seeing all the surfboards next to the Sunset Bar,

it looks like you can rent them right there,

Even in winter, the weather is quite mild,

so it doesn't feel cold at all.

I'd say surfing here is a year-round option!
