Planning a trip to Jinan, China? Baotu Spring (also known as Baotuquan, 趵突泉) is an absolute must-see. Adult admission is priced at 40 Chinese Yuan, which is approximately ~$6.
The spring operates daily from 07:00 AM to 07:00 PM. You can comfortably explore the entire area in about 1.5 to 2 hours.
I highly recommend booking your tickets in advance. I pre-purchased my ticket and was able to skip the long lines at the ticket counter, walking straight in. I'll cover everything you need to know, from ticket prices and discounts to the best viewing route and even nearby free attractions worth combining with your visit.
01. What is Baotu Spring?

If you only have a day or two in Jinan, you might be wondering which attractions to prioritize: Baotu Spring, Daming Lake, or Black Tiger Spring.
And if you're traveling with family, especially older parents or young children, you'll want to know if the walking paths are easy to navigate.
Baotu Spring is considered the premier among Jinan's 72 famous springs, often hailed as the "First Spring Under Heaven."
According to Shandong Province's tourism channels, the spring, which resumed gushing on September 6, 2003, has been flowing continuously for 23 years as of September 2026!
Baotu Spring, along with Daming Lake, Black Tiger Spring, and Wulongtan, forms the "First Spring Scenic Area," which has earned China's highest tourist attraction rating of 5A. If you can only visit one spot in Jinan, Baotu Spring is undoubtedly the one to choose!

When I arrived, there was a significantly long queue of tour groups stretching out in front of the ticket counter.
At local Chinese ticket booths, foreigners often need to present their passports and go through a detailed explanation process, which can be quite time-consuming.

Before my trip, I pre-booked my ticket through an English-language interface and entered directly using the QR code I received via email.
The price was comparable to the on-site 40 CNY (~$6) ticket, but saving time by avoiding the queue made it an absolute no-brainer!
Especially during Chinese public holidays, the park can get incredibly busy, sometimes even announcing that reservation capacity is nearing its limit. It's always a good idea to check availability for your preferred date and see if day + night combo options are offered.

03. Suggested Baotu Spring Tour Route

Here's the path I took to explore the park:
📌 Walking Order
✔ Enter through the South Gate
✔ Baotu Spring's Main Source (in front of Luoyuan Hall, Guanlan Pavilion)
✔ Jinxiantian Spring, Shuoyuchuan Spring
✔ Li Qingzhao Memorial Hall
✔ Exit through the East Gate to Tiancheng Square
The area around the main spring gets the most crowded, so I recommend taking your photos there first before moving into the quieter inner gardens.
The gardens near the Li Qingzhao Memorial Hall offer a completely different, serene atmosphere compared to the bustling main spring area.
The paths inside are mostly flat, so there's very little concern about stairs, making it accessible for all. Exiting through the East Gate brings you directly to Tiancheng Square, which makes it easy to walk to Black Tiger Spring and Daming Lake.

I visited around 1:00 PM after lunch, and whether it was because it coincided with a weekend or not, Baotu Spring was by far the most crowded attraction I visited in Jinan!
Seeing the Baotu Spring in person, with the water continuously bubbling up and creating mesmerizing whirlpools from below, was truly fascinating. It immediately became clear why this is a 5A-rated tourist spot.
However, due to the sheer number of people around the main spring, I had to snap my photos quickly and move on! 😵

Just a short walk away from the main spring, you'll discover these tranquil scenes. The water is pristine, and the gardens are exceptionally well-maintained.

During my visit, there was even a chrysanthemum festival, with flowers blooming everywhere! This attraction would be particularly delightful for families or older visitors.

Inside, you'll find teahouses and simple snacks, making it a great spot to relax and grab a bite. Its proximity to other attractions also makes it easy to combine with other sightseeing. If you're coming to Jinan, I highly recommend pre-booking your Baotu Spring tickets from home for a smooth and enjoyable visit!
