A Taste of Pira Winery
Hello fellow explorers!
Today, I'm excited to share my experience from one of the incredible wineries I visited in Barolo:
the charming Pira Winery.

Location, Location, Location!
📍PIRA Winery
Via XX Settembre, 9, 12050 Serralunga d'Alba CN, Italy

Pira Winery is nestled on the western side of the quaint Serralunga d'Alba village.
Since the village itself is quite small, it's incredibly easy to find and explore.
We decided to visit without a reservation, after enjoying lunch at the 'Osteria Tre Case' restaurant I previously featured, making for a lovely post-meal stroll.

First Impressions

When we first arrived, we knocked on the door, but no one seemed to be around. We almost turned back, but decided to wait just '5 more minutes!'
Right around then, another tour group finished up, and we were warmly welcomed inside. Talk about perfect timing!

Stepping into the winery, you're immediately greeted by the sprawling vineyard hills that are a signature sight in every Barolo village.

The Tasting Experience
The tasting began with a personal touch: the owner's daughter herself led us through the wines, explaining each one with such genuine passion and warmth.
It truly made the experience feel more authentic and special compared to other tastings.
Pira Winery boasts three main vineyards, and their entire wine lineup is crafted from the grapes harvested from each of these distinct plots.

The tasting included a total of six glasses, allowing us to sample every wine Pira Winery produces.
Here's the lineup:
- Dolcetto / Dolcetto d'Alba 23'
- Barbera / Barbera d'Alba 22'
- Nebbiolo / Barolo Serralunga d'Alba 20'
- Nebbiolo / Barolo Margheria 20' (Single Vineyard)
- Nebbiolo / Barolo Marenca 20' (Single Vineyard)
- Nebbiolo / Barolo Vigna Rionda 20' (Single Vineyard)

The Dolcetto grape was actually a new experience for us on this Italian trip. While interesting, it didn't quite hit the mark for our palate at any of the wineries we tried. It had this sweet, bubblegum-like aroma, but then the taste wasn't sweet at all – it felt a bit like a playful trick on the senses!

For a light accompaniment, grissini (breadsticks) were served with the tasting. You could also choose between still or sparkling water.

Below are some photos of the wines we enthusiastically sampled. With four Nebbiolo/Barolo wines out of six, we definitely felt a pleasant buzz by the end!
In fact, the woman sitting behind us had to stop her tasting midway due to the alcohol – it's a marathon, not a sprint!

It was particularly fantastic to compare three single-vineyard Barolos, each crafted from grapes grown in specific plots.
Right next to the tasting room, a lovely terrace offered views of the very vineyards where the wines we just tasted were born – a truly immersive experience!

Bringing Home a Taste of Barolo
After such a delightful and informative tasting experience, complete with friendly explanations, we were presented with the price list.
The prices were so reasonable that we couldn't resist and ended up getting two bottles to take home!

It seems every winery tour inevitably leads to our hands getting a little heavier...

As we left, we spotted a beautiful six-bottle set. Someday, I hope to collect them all!

And that concludes our incredibly satisfying visit to Pira Winery.
