Discover Hwangnam Jjondigi, the ultimate sweet and spicy fried street food snack in Gyeongju's trendy Hwangridan-gil. Here is our honest review and tips!
Hey there, fellow foodies! I'm back with another local food adventure.
To be honest, I've never been a huge fan of traditional Korean chewy snacks like jjondigi.
But everything changed when I tried Hwangnam Jjondigi in Gyeongju.
It was so incredibly delicious
that we ended up buying it two days in a row!!!
Seriously, if I ever plan another trip to Gyeongju,
this snack alone would be worth the journey. 🤣🤣
A must-try street food recommendation in Hwangridan-gil, Gyeongju
Hwangnam Jjondigi - Here is my highly recommended review!

✅ The signature Hwangnam seasoning is absolutely mind-blowing!
✅ If you're exploring on foot, the Jjon-Maek (Jjondigi + Beer) combo is a must-try.
✅ Even on weekends, the line moves fast (usually a 5-10 minute wait).

This famous Gyeongju street snack is so popular
that there are already two locations right on Hwangridan-gil,
plus another branch near Daereungwon Tomb Park.
While writing this, I also realized they have a branch in Samcheong-dong, Seoul!
I'm definitely planning a trip there this summer.
I can't wait to have it again!

These photos are from our second day of the trip.
Since I wasn't typically a fan of chewy flour snacks,
I only took two quick photos when my husband suggested we try it.
I didn't expect much at first...
But it was so incredibly delicious
that we went back the very next day before heading back to Seoul! ㅋㅋㅋㅋ
2. Recommended Snack Combos & Pricing

A single order of Hwangnam Jjondigi is ~$3,
and you can get it as a combo set with Cola, Sikhye (sweet rice drink), or Draft Beer.
Since we were driving around throughout our trip,
we couldn't do the beer combo and settled for the Cola set on day two.
But if you are exploring on foot, you MUST get the Jjon-Maek (Jjondigi + Beer) combo!
It is honestly the ultimate salty-sweet bar snack. 🍻🍻🍻
I seriously contemplated buying the DIY meal kit for ~$6,
but I was worried I wouldn't be able to replicate that perfect street-side texture at home,
so I reluctantly passed on it. ㅋㅋㅋ

What makes Hwangnam Jjondigi so unique
is the special seasoning they shake over it. This is the real game-changer.
You can't ask for "just a little" seasoning—it's either fully loaded or plain.
But trust me, you MUST get the seasoning. Without it, there's no point in eating it!
3. Why We Highly Recommend Hwangnam Jjondigi

On our second day, we went back fully committed
and ordered one cup per person! 1인 1쫀드기 ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
On the first day, there were 2-3 groups waiting ahead of us,
but on the second day, we timed it perfectly and ordered instantly.
(Even if there is a line, it moves incredibly fast!)

While traditional jjondigi is usually served flat,
they slice it thin like french fries here,
deep-fry it to a perfect chew, and toss it in that magical seasoning.
The seasoning tastes like a mix of spicy ramen powder and sugar.
How could that ever taste bad? ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
Please, do yourself a favor and try it!

Since it's a takeout-only spot,
there is no indoor seating.
However, there are small park benches and outdoor structures nearby
where you can sit down and enjoy your snack,
or you can just munch on them while strolling through the beautiful streets of Hwangridan-gil.
That wraps up my review of Gyeongju's most addictive street snack, Hwangnam Jjondigi!

On weekends, the wait time is about 5 to 10 minutes, and the turnover rate is quite fast. Please note that parking is not available at the store.
A single order of Hwangnam Jjondeugi is ~$3, and set menus paired with cola, sikhye, or beer range from ~$3 to ~$4. Additionally, a 3-pack meal kit is sold for ~$6.
