I absolutely love chasing beautiful seasonal flowers and capturing those perfect 'life shot' photos.
Every time I visit Gyeongju, which I adore,
there's a regular hanok cafe I never miss.
That's Cafe Basilla!
From mid-July,
I heard news of sunflowers painting the landscape yellow,
and even though I felt a bit anxious visiting today in mid-August,
I was already greeted by vibrant crape myrtles and pampas grass
welcoming me.
It was a little disappointing that the sunflowers were past their prime,
but I still managed to capture the remaining sunflowers' live status,
along with the autumn-welcoming crape myrtles and pampas grass scenery.
So stick with me to the end for all the details!

1. Gyeongju Cafe Basilla
Recommended as a must-visit spot in Gyeongju,
Basilla, a true gem for seasonal flowers,
boasts a classic hanok exterior,
and is a space overflowing with Gyeongju's tranquil ambiance.
Both the 1st and 2nd floors operate as a cafe.

2. Indoor Atmosphere
Before we dive into the live status of the grand outdoor flower garden,
let me first show you the cafe's indoor atmosphere!
As you open the door and step into the first floor,
the entire front wall is a refreshing floor-to-ceiling window,
offering a panoramic view of the outdoor flower garden and the reservoir.
For capturing a drink shot with the flower garden as a backdrop,
the window seats on the first floor are the absolute best.
However, because they're so popular,
they're not often empty.
I failed to snag one too, of course 🙃
The second floor was charmingly divided into various cozy spaces!
In the center, there's a plush, spacious sofa area,
perfect for unwinding after a day of travel.
However, it's also a thoroughfare, so people pass by frequently,
which can make it a bit noisy and not ideal for quiet conversations.
The second floor has a lot of partitioned spaces,
so the tables are relatively close together.
Please keep this in mind when you visit!
3. Basil Farm: Gyeongju's September Flower Hotspot!

For those of you planning a visit to Gyeongju Basil Farm,
I'll summarize the flower conditions you're probably most curious about.
Here's the real-time information as of my visit (August 20th).
First off, the sunflowers at Basil Farm,
especially the rows near the parking lot, had already shed most of their petals
and were mostly past their prime.
The sunflowers in the flower garden inside the cafe area
were still alive, but
perhaps due to the cloudy weather, they were drooping quite a bit.
I think they'll all be gone soon.
If sunflowers are your main purpose,
you'll need to visit within this week.
But don't be too sad if the sunflowers are past their peak!
Right now, Basil Farm is blooming beautifully with crape myrtles and pampas grass.
(Plus verbena too!)
With the colorful crape myrtles
and Hado Reservoir in the background,
you can truly capture that fairy-tale vibe.
Step into the tall pampas grass
and stand right in the middle for your photos,
and you can get perfect, once-in-a-lifetime shots here too.
Just be careful, as the pampas grass leaves can cut your hands,
so be really cautious when taking pictures!
Throughout the flower garden, you'll find
artificial flowers for photo props and umbrellas to shield you from the hot sun.
Feel free to use them if you need them,
but please don't forget to return them to their original spots!
4. Cafe Basil Farm Menu & Prices
Basil Farm, a wonderful place to enjoy flowers in September,
is also a cafe in Gyeongju worth visiting.
One menu item per person is mandatory!
They have Basil Farm's signature drinks,
and a wide variety of coffees and teas!
While not extensive, they also offer some baked goods.
Since it was so humid and hot, we didn't hesitate
and ordered an Iced Americano (~$4).
When I visited during daisy season, the cup holders featured daisy flowers,
but coming in summer means it's sunflower season, so the cup holders have switched to sunflowers.
So cute!
If it's your first time visiting Basilla, or if you're not a big fan of Americano,
I also recommend their signature Sunflower Latte (~$6)
or the refreshing Basilla Patbingsu (~$12)!
5. Final Thoughts
While Gyeongju truly overflows with places to visit in September,
I truly hope you'll embrace the romance of capturing 'life shots' with seasonal flowers.
Enjoying the cool breeze from Hadong Reservoir
and reveling in the vibrant September flower viewing,
Cafe Basilla is truly the perfect spot.
Even though the sunflowers are fading, which is a bit sad,
the gorgeous combination of pampas grass and crape myrtle is absolutely stunning.

don't forget to stop by Basilla and capture plenty of those autumn 'life shots'!

As of your visit on August 20, 2026, the sunflowers at Basilla are past their prime and are expected to wither soon. However, the crape myrtles and pampas grass are currently in full bloom and look very beautiful. You can also see verbena.
Gyeongju Cafe Basilla operates daily from 9 AM to 9 PM, year-round. The last order is at 8:10 PM. A dedicated free parking lot is available for visitors.
Cafe Basilla's signature menu includes the Sunflower Latte for ~$6 and Basilla Patbingsu (red bean shaved ice) for ~$12. An Iced Americano is sold for ~$4.
