Truth be told, this Ho Chi Minh adventure wasn't originally in my plans.
A friend of mine was already exploring Ho Chi Minh City,
and since they'd have to book a place to stay anyway, even if they were alone,
they invited me to join them, promising to treat me to some amazing food.
So, I went!
But here’s the kicker:
it wasn't a hotel at all... it was a dorm room! 😂
My friend insisted it was super clean and wonderful,
and suggested we stay there.
Now, I had previously made it clear that I'm, ahem, of a certain age and dorms just aren't my jam anymore...
I'd said anywhere else was fine, as long as it wasn't a dorm.
So, we had planned to stay in a
twin studio within the same hostel (a private room with separate bunk beds).
That's what we were supposed to stay in!
However, that specific room type was fully booked...
So, I ended up having to stay in a dorm.
(If you ask me, we just needed to book in advance,
but they just procrastinated and the room was gone on the day of! 😂)
Anyway, my friend was right – it was generally clean throughout.
The overall facilities and vibe were actually pretty good,
so staying in their other private rooms would probably be a much better experience (like the ones pictured below).
The commonly known drawbacks of dorms are usually
luggage storage and the difficulty of getting a truly deep sleep.
First, regarding luggage storage,
they had separate individual lockers,
which was pretty decent.
(Though, it was still a bit inconvenient not being able to just spread out my suitcase comfortably on the floor.)
As for getting some shut-eye, even if the main lights were on outside your bunk,
there were blackout curtains that completely blocked out the light,
and it was surprisingly quiet with hardly any noise,
so I actually slept really well (at least on the first night...).
The second day, though... 😂
I have no idea who it was,
but someone set their alarm to vibrate and just let it keep going,
and I woke up to it, which was genuinely infuriating...
If it had been an audible alarm,
I would've known who it was and could have gone to wake them up,
or at least figured out how to make it stop!
But with only that subtle, incessant vibration,
I couldn't for the life of me figure out which bunk it was coming from.
And that's why, dorms...
just aren't for me! 😂
Honestly, these days, I've been staying in quite a few budget-friendly spots,
and there are plenty of hotels offering similar prices.
Which makes me wonder even more...
...'Why bother?' 😂
That said, the location here (it's close to my beloved Miu Miu Spa!)
and its facilities are quite good,
so I wouldn't mind trying out one of their other private rooms next time! 😂
Here's the exterior of our Ho Chi Minh accommodation.
There's a cafe right out front.
(And yes, this is that cafe, the one I asked to call for me on Bui Vien Walking Street! 😂)
There's also this slightly unexpected (and awesome!) slide,
and you know I *had* to try it at least once! 😂
But there were always people around, so I couldn't get a clear run at it...
(I actually planned to wake up early one morning to try it, but kept hitting snooze 🤦♀️)
Finally, on the last day, during checkout,
I just went for it, people or no people! 😂
The speed picked up quite a bit at the very end,
which gave me a little jolt! 😂
This is the inviting lobby of our Ho Chi Minh stay.
It has a super clean and neat vibe throughout.
Behind the lobby, there's a dedicated co-working space.
This was a really popular spot.
(Mostly Western travelers) would set up with their laptops,
and (I'm not sure what it was, but) they were all diligently working away on something important!
Honestly, I think what I'd pick as the biggest advantage of this place is definitely this coworking space.
While you could work in the lobby of another hotel or similar places, here the lobby is set up from the start as a dedicated workspace, so the atmosphere is perfect for it. I feel like you can really focus on your work here.
(My friend was on vacation in Ho Chi Minh, but it's also true that they had some work to do during their holiday, so I guess that's partly why they chose this place... haha)
I had a really short trip this time, so I didn't actually use this space myself.
Someday, if I get the chance to come for a 'workation' rather than just a simple vacation, I'd love to stay in a place like this and work from the coworking space. Haha!
There were so many people constantly, so I couldn't take a picture. Finally, when there was no one around, I quickly snapped a shot!
And there was one person coding there, their focus was incredible...
They were coding from around lunchtime when we left, and when we came back late at night, they were still coding in the exact same spot! Wow.
First, let's take a look at the facilities of the accommodation in Ho Chi Minh where I stayed. It's set up as an 8-person dorm room.
(There's also a 4-person dorm, but it's currently under renovation.)
If you draw those curtains, the light is completely blocked out.
There's a switch and an outlet by the head of the bed, and fresh towels are provided daily like this. There's a water dispenser in the hallway.
The showers and toilets are communal, like this.
(Individual rooms have their own facilities.)
Slippers are available to take when needed, like this, and I kept telling myself 'I should take them, I should take them', but I forgot every single day, haha. Ended up forgetting them even on the last day, haha!
There's a place called 'Cocktails on Top' on the rooftop, so we decided to check it out.
(Actually, I thought it was 'Cocktails on Top' when we went, but it was 'on Tap' after all! LOL)
Oh... the atmosphere is better than I expected, right??
Perhaps because it was still early, there were no customers.
(But a coworking space... and a rooftop cocktail bar... don't they seem a bit mismatched? I thought as I went up, but hey, maybe coming up here for a drink or two to unwind after work isn't such a bad idea? Haha!)
As I was pondering over the menu...
"If you're unsure, would you like to try a sample?"
"We have some pre-made ones~"
they said.
Huh?? They've already made cocktails??
Did a new staff member join and practice making them?
But there were no customers, so why would they pre-make them?
And so, I obediently followed along.
Huh???
They serve cocktails like that??
Not beer??
ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
So, "we have some pre-made ones" meant *this*! Hahaha.
Looking at the menu again,
it wasn't Cocktails on TOP...
it was Cocktails on TAP! Hahaha.
Cocktails poured from a tap... interesting! Haha.
Thanks to that, I got to sample a few recommendations before choosing. Haha.

After sampling a few, I chose
SEE MAI.
I wonder if they intentionally named the cocktail this way? Hahahaha.
It was a bit bittersweet, being the last night already...
But with the cool, slightly rainy weather,
the pleasant buzz from the cocktail,
and our own little rooftop night view.
It was a lovely way to end the trip.
Ultimately, I ended up staying here for 2 nights and then headed back home.
Honestly, the location was quite convenient for going to Miya Miya massage,
and heading to Le Thanh Ton for Japanese food.
The facilities themselves were also great, so
I would definitely consider revisiting this Ho Chi Minh accommodation.
(But definitely not the dormitory! A regular room next time, hahaha.)
