Hawoldang, a renowned Jjamppong Sundubu restaurant in Gangneung,
stands out among the many eateries in Chodang Sundubu Village.
It's truly a rising star among them,
and has become incredibly popular as the ultimate Jjamppong Sundubu hotspot.
While Donghwa Garden has long been the most famous,
lately, there's been a growing buzz that "it tastes even better than Donghwa Garden," with
many reviews verifying it as an authentic culinary find.
Naturally, more and more people are flocking to try it.
I also discovered it through a recommendation from a close friend who recently visited Gangneung.
Hearing her exclaim, "I've found the Jjamppong Sundubu of my life!"
I knew I had to pay a visit right away.
And the verdict is...
👉 I couldn't agree more! Haha.
My entire family gave it their stamp of approval,
and now, I think this will be our go-to spot whenever we come to Gangneung.

Hawoldang is situated at the far end of the road in Chodang Sundubu Village,
tucked away in the alley directly to the right of Donghwa Garden.
It's about a 15-minute walk from Gangmun Beach,
making it a perfect spot for those exploring Gangmun Beach on foot and looking for a delicious meal!
We were also 'pedestrian travelers' on this trip, opting not to rent a car,
and after enjoying lunch at Hawoldang,
we strolled over to a cafe at Gangmun Beach.
It was just the right distance to walk off a delicious, filling meal.
Haha.

For those visiting with their own car or a rental,
you can use Hawoldang's exclusive parking lot located next to the restaurant building.
The parking spaces are quite spacious, which is a big plus.
However, the alley leading from Donghwa Garden to Hawoldang itself isn't very wide,
so the path can get quite congested.
We visited during a recent holiday,
and by the time we finished and left just after noon,
it was absolute chaos with cars trying to enter and exit.
I strongly recommend arriving early and getting moving quickly.
Hawoldang Chodang Jjamppong Sundubu <Waiting Tips>

Hawoldang is quite popular and often has a significant wait,
so it's a good idea to know some waiting tips before you visit.
On-site registration via Catchtable only!
(No advance reservations through the app)
We visited during a holiday period,
and arrived around 11:10 AM, but there were
already quite a few customers waiting outside.

More cars kept arriving, and I felt a sudden rush, haha!
So I quickly picked up my pace and put our name on the waiting list.
I registered for the waiting list at 11:10 AM.
Our waiting number was 26,
with 9 teams ahead of us,
and the estimated wait time until our turn was 40 minutes.

After successfully registering on Catchtable,
I took my time to read through the menu,
pondering what to order. Hehe.

We visited during the Lunar New Year holiday,
and it was quite windy and cold that day,
making it tough to wait outside.
My sibling suggested we wait while enjoying some gelato ice cream
at Sonamujip nearby.
It turns out they have a waiting area there,
so we could sit warmly, enjoying our ice cream
while we waited! What a relief!
Also, if you're not planning to have an appetizer
like us before your meal,
there's a shop called 'Market Ubud'
right across from Hawoldang.
It's a vintage accessories shop, and browsing there
while you wait is another fantastic tip!

Sitting there, enjoying our ice cream,
time just flew by! Hehe.
The initial estimated wait time was 40 minutes,
but it only took about 35 minutes before we received
a KakaoTalk notification from Catchtable saying it was our turn.
When there were about 3 teams left before us,
we got up and moved towards Hawoldang, and the timing was absolutely perfect!
Just a heads-up: if you don't enter within 2 minutes
after receiving your notification,
your reservation might be cancelled.
So, don't forget to head over a little early and wait!
Gangneung Sundubu Village Lunch Hotspot: Hawoldang Menu & Review

Hawoldang's interior was just as clean and stylish as its exterior,
and I was surprised by its cozy, cafe-like vibe.
Usually, sundubu restaurants have a bit of a rustic, countryside feel....
You know what I mean, right? Hehe.
While that kind of atmosphere has its own charm,
having lunch in such a beautiful space
made me even more excited.

We quickly placed our order at the kiosk.
We ordered these three dishes:
● Jjampong Sundubu Rice (Spicy Seafood Tofu Soup with Rice) (~$8)
● Original Chadol Jjampong Sundubu (Spicy Beef Brisket & Seafood Tofu Soup) (~$11)
● Sundubu Baekban with Chodubu (Soft Tofu Set Meal with Fresh Tofu) (~$7)
My friend highly recommended trying the Modubu (block tofu),
but I completely forgot to order it! What a miss...
Oh well, next time, hehe.

You'll get three essential side dishes.
They might look simple, but let's be real, when you're diving into Jjamppong Sundubu,
you don't really need a ton of side dishes, do you?
The white kimchi was incredibly refreshing and tasty, so much so that
I got refills twice!
It perfectly complemented the Jjamppong Sundubu.

For the Jjamppong Sundubu menu, I ordered the basic option,
which comes with rice instead of noodles.
This was actually on the recommendation of a friend who'd already experienced this place,
so I happily followed their lead.
They told me the rice version was better than the noodles,
and I was like, 'How much of a difference could it really make?'
But honestly, the sundubu with rice
did feel a touch more delicious.
Of course, their homemade noodle option was tasty too,
but if I swing by again, I'm definitely sticking with the rice! Lol.

This dish is a perfect harmony of juicy beef brisket Jjamppong and silky Chodang Sundubu!
The rich, savory flavor of the brisket truly elevates the broth,
making it incredibly rich and delicious.
And the best part? There's such a generous amount of brisket that
it feels like it never ends, no matter how much you eat!
They're also super generous with the sundubu and bean sprouts,
so the overall portion size is seriously massive! Haha.

We also tried the classic Jjamppong Sundubu with Rice,
and my whole family agreed it was way better than what we had at Donghwa Garden.
It's far richer and deeper in flavor than the typical Jjamppong Sundubu
you'd commonly find in Gangneung—it's absolutely sublime!
From the very first bite, that amazing smoky flavor just bursts through,
followed by the spicy kick and umami of the chili oil filling your mouth.
It felt like my whole body just relaxed, even though I hadn't had a single drop of alcohol! Haha.
Anyone out there needing a serious hangover cure?
You absolutely HAVE to eat it at Hawol-dang!
Since I don't have a photo of the Sundubu Baekban (Chodubu), which is their soft tofu set meal,
I'll show it to you in the video.
If you're visiting with three or more people, like we did,
definitely give the Chodubu dish a try too.
Among all the bold and flavorful dishes,
this one wins you over with its delicate simplicity.
The tofu itself is incredibly soft and rich in nutty flavor,
so a light dip in soy sauce is all it needs to be absolutely delicious.

So, today I've had the pleasure of introducing you to <Hawol-dang>,
a fantastic restaurant near Gangmun Beach in Gangneung, located right in the Chodang Sundubu Village.
This is genuinely a place I can wholeheartedly recommend,
so go ahead and save it as a must-visit Jjamppong Sundubu spot in Gangneung,
and make sure to include it in your Gangneung travel itinerary!
Even if you have to brave a bit of a wait,
it's absolutely worth visiting at least once – trust me!
