Discover Gyoam Makguksu in Goseong, Gangwon-do—the ultimate spot for refreshing Korean buckwheat noodles and melt-in-your-mouth boiled pork (suyuk).

During our recent road trip to Goseong, Gangwon-do, we stopped by a local legend for lunch:
Gyoam Makguksu, a spot famous for cold buckwheat noodles!
While the noodles were incredibly refreshing, the boiled pork (suyuk) completely stole the show.
It was so good that I absolutely had to share our experience.
You simply cannot visit the East Coast of Korea without trying authentic makguksu.
To help you plan a fail-proof foodie itinerary,
here is our completely honest, 100% self-funded review!

Getting There & Parking

Gyoam Makguksu is conveniently located along the main road right by Gyoamri Beach.
It sits just a 5-minute walk away from Baekchon Makguksu,
which is arguably the most famous noodle shop in the entire region.

To be completely honest, our original plan was to visit Baekchon Makguksu.
However, when we arrived at 1:00 PM on a Friday, the waitlist was ridiculously long.
Since we hate waiting in long lines, we quickly pivoted to Gyoam Makguksu,
having read great reviews that it was just as delicious.
(Best decision ever!)

While Gyoam Makguksu has its own dedicated parking lot,
it is on the smaller side and fills up fast.
Don't worry though—there is plenty of free street parking nearby.
Stepping Inside Gyoam Makguksu

The restaurant is housed in a clean, standalone building with a rustic charm.
We were lucky to get seated immediately during Friday lunch,
but seeing the waiting list at the entrance, it definitely gets packed on weekends.

The interior is simple, bright, and very clean.
They also have a lovely outdoor seating area,
which would be perfect for dining al fresco when the weather cools down.
Since it was a hot summer day, we opted for the air-conditioned indoor tables.

We noticed the restaurant has been featured on famous Korean TV shows,
including Master of Life and the comedy-thriller movie promo for Handsome Guys!
Seeing these accolades definitely made our expectations soar.

They are highly accommodating for families traveling with kids.
They provide high chairs, child-friendly forks, and kid-sized spoons.
If you are traveling with little ones, this is a huge plus!
The Menu & Honest Food Review

The menu at Gyoam Makguksu is straightforward and simple:
Classic Makguksu / Perilla Seed Makguksu / Suyuk (Boiled Pork) / Instant Rice
Please note that their seasoned pollack (myeongtae-hoe) is only available for takeout orders.

Since we both prefer clean, classic flavors, we ordered:
* Classic Makguksu: ~$8 each
* Boiled Pork (Suyuk - Small): ~$16

When the noodles arrive, they are served dry in a bowl topped with seaweed and a boiled egg.
The chilled radish water kimchi broth (dongchimi) and spicy sauce are served on the side.
You get to customize your own bowl!
Just follow the instructions on the wall to mix the perfect ratio of
broth, oil, vinegar, and mustard to suit your taste buds.

Refreshing Dongchimi Cold Noodles

Spicy Bibim Style Noodles
Here is how they look once prepared!
My husband went for the broth-heavy, ultra-refreshing dongchimi version,
while I crafted a spicy bibim version to pair with the pork.
The buckwheat noodles themselves are soft yet wonderfully chewy. Both styles were brilliant!

But the real showstopper? This divine plate of Suyuk.
I had read rave reviews about their pork, but this surpassed all expectations.
Honestly, they could easily run a highly successful restaurant selling just this pork!
The pork is incredibly tender, perfectly seasoned, and free of any gamey odor.
Wrapping a slice in pickled cabbage with fresh garlic and a touch of ssamjang (savory soybean paste)
creates the absolute perfect bite.
The cold noodles were fantastic, but the pork is what I will be dreaming about.

Even my husband, who isn't typically a massive fan of buckwheat cold noodles,
agreed that this was one of the best meals of our Goseong trip.
If you are hunting for an authentic, crowd-pleasing dining spot in Goseong,
we highly recommend making a stop at Gyoam Makguksu!
