This is a review of a meal generously treated by my friend's mom, truly a "friend's mom's money, friend's mom bought" experience!

Escaping Seoul's relentless monsoon season, we found refuge in Gyeongju. The weather was glorious, but it was also incredibly hot, almost to the point of being overwhelming! So, we sought out a rumored culinary paradise to recharge.

I had to taste for myself just how delicious it could be to warrant such high praise, and I certainly enjoyed every bite!

I nearly melted from the heat, it was so incredibly hot!

Despite the scorching heat, I diligently took a bus from Gyeongju Station, got off across from IM Bank, and trudged my way over, panting. There's plenty of parking, so please, if you can, drive or take a taxi! It's worth it.

Anyway, we arrived on a Saturday at 11:10 AM and snagged the very last table on the first floor. For a BBQ restaurant, the turnover is pretty good, but by noon, a line had already formed.

Using Naver Maps & Reservation Apps

If you search on Naver Maps (a popular Korean mapping app), you can often see the number of waiting teams in the top right corner. For example, on a Sunday around 2:00 PM, you can usually get in right away.

Restaurant Exterior

Not much of an exterior, but still...

As soon as you walk in, you're greeted by about 6-7 staff members meticulously separating the beef rib meat from the bones.

Yeongyang Charcoal Grilled Ribs specializes in Hanwoo (Korean beef) ribs, so most of the staff were busy preparing the cuts. It seems they then low-temperature age the trimmed meat.

As soon as we sat down, they brought out the charcoal. It got hot immediately, but the excitement began!

We ordered one marinated rib and one salt-grilled rib. I was worried we'd have to order two portions of each, but single portions were fine! The meat itself is so delicious that I recommend both the salt-grilled and marinated options!

Reviews for the cold noodles were quite mixed, and while I usually can't resist them... I heard they serve a complimentary rustic soybean paste stew when you order rice, so we quickly ordered two bowls!

Once you order, everything is set up within about 3 minutes. The baby lettuce was incredibly fresh and delicious, and every single side dish was fantastic! The aged kimchi was a real standout!

Ah, haha! I was so busy devouring everything that I don't have any photos of the perfectly cooked meat! It cooks quickly, so eat it up fast! It was truly delicious even without any dipping sauce or green onion salad. The prices were reasonable for the quality, so I'll definitely be back next time.

Apparently, the marinated ribs are simply fresh raw ribs seasoned right before serving. It was surprising, as I'd always thought marinated meats were usually to cover up lower quality cuts. The marinade itself is on the sweeter side, but not overly strong. It tasted like a standard marinated rib, nothing overly special, even for someone like me who usually loves pork galbi.

This is the soybean paste stew that comes with your rice. I immediately poured my rice into it and made it into 'doenjang-sulbap' (soybean paste stew rice) – yum! The owner even came over and put it directly on the grill for us, warning that it would smoke on the table. Later, as we ate, the bottom got slightly crispy, which was absolutely delicious! It tasted just like a comforting anchovy-based soybean paste stew my grandma used to make. (Though, I wouldn't come just for this.)

They've received a Blue Ribbon award and other accolades. Each table also gets a wet wipe. Oh, I should have taken one, but I was so caught up in the moment that I forgot... a slight regret!

Anyway, after a delicious meal, our Gyeongju trip officially began. Endless gratitude to my friend and her mom for the wonderful treat! 🫶

Conclusion

The taxi driver was right – highly recommended!

Judging by the multi-generational family gatherings, this is clearly a local favorite. However, I wouldn't say it's worth a trip to Gyeongju solely for this restaurant. But if you're already in Gyeongju, it's an absolute must-try! 🫶
