So-ok Gyeongju Review 2026: Hwanglidan-gil's Iconic Korean Flavors

During a previous trip to Gyeongju, I had the pleasure of dining at So-ok, a truly memorable restaurant, and I'm excited to share my experience. ​​

So-ok is renowned among Gyeongju restaurants for its significant wait times. Even when I first visited several years ago, the queue was still remarkably long. ​​

The restaurant itself is a beautifully renovated traditional Korean house, or 'hanok,' making the entrance and exterior a popular photo spot. You'll often see visitors snapping pictures here! ​​

While waiting, you can relax on the 'toetmaru,' a traditional wooden porch, soaking in the hanok's charm. ​​

So-ok Menu Highlights

It seems most prices have increased by approximately ~$1 since my last visit. ​​

There's even a separate waiting room, which is often packed with eager diners. ​​

Upon arrival, make sure to add your name to the waiting list. ​​

It appeared they prepare the basic table settings in advance before seating guests. ​​

Our meal started with delicious banchan (side dishes) and the stir-fried cabbage jeon we ordered. The jeon was a bit on the smaller side, but flavorful.

First to arrive was the Gamtae Jumeokbap (seaweed rice balls).

This dish is definitely a 'love it or leave it' kind of flavor. If you're already a fan of gamtae (a unique type of seaweed with a distinct aroma and taste), you'll likely enjoy it. However, if it's your first time trying it, it might take some getting used to. ​​

And here's the star: the Sogalbijjim (braised beef short ribs). ​​

The Sogalbijjim was also quite tasty, though my only slight disappointment was the portion size relative to the price. Overall, So-ok offers a unique dining experience in Hwanglidan-gil, set within a beautifully restored hanok. Due to the incredibly long wait times, I highly recommend arriving right at opening. While it's not the most budget-friendly option given the wait and portion sizes, the food quality is good, and it's definitely a visually appealing hotspot with photogenic dishes and ambiance. ​​
