What is Gyeongju Cheomseongdae?
Cheomseongdae, the oldest surviving astronomical observatory in East Asia, is a proud symbol of Gyeongju, built during the reign of Queen Seondeok, the 27th ruler of the Silla Dynasty.
Standing at approximately 30 feet (9 meters) tall, Cheomseongdae is a testament to the incredible scientific and mathematical prowess of the Silla era. Its design holds fascinating secrets:
Days in a Year
The approximately 365 stones forming Cheomseongdae symbolize the 365 days of a year.
Queen Seondeok and the Lunar Calendar
The main body's 27 tiers represent Queen Seondeok, the 27th monarch. When combined with the top well-stone, the 29-30 tiers signify the number of days in a lunar month.
12 Months and 24 Solar Terms
Divided by the central square window, there are 12 tiers both above and below, representing the 12 months of the year and the 24 solar terms.

At Gyeongju Cheomseongdae, a spectacular media art show unfolds, reinterpreting the history and art of the Silla Kingdom through brilliant light displays.
Each Cheomseongdae media art show runs for 7 minutes and is screened only twice a day. Make sure to plan your visit accordingly to catch this moving and impressive display!
Night Lighting Ends at 10:00 PM!
We visited Cheomseongdae a bit late in the evening. We were imagining the beautiful observatory lit up against the night sky, but much to our disappointment, the lights turned off right as we arrived... Ugh!

As it turns out, the Cheomseongdae night lighting is turned off at 10:00 PM.
(As of early summer 2026. We were still able to walk around and explore the surrounding area without any issues, and there were still plenty of people around.)
To avoid our unfortunate experience, we highly recommend arriving well before 10:00 PM to fully enjoy the illuminated Cheomseongdae!
