Gyeongju 3-Day Itinerary: Your Complete Guide
Why Renting a Car in Gyeongju is a Must-Have

My first visit to Gyeongju in two decades since a memorable elementary school field trip!
Back then, our whirlwind tour on a packed tourist bus left me wanting more of Gyeongju.
But as an adult in 2026, I knew it was time for a proper exploration! I rented a car and spent three glorious days freely roaming all the major sights.

If you're planning to stick solely to the trendy Hwanglidan-gil area, you might manage without a car!
However, if your itinerary includes iconic spots like Bulguksa Temple, Seokguram Grotto, or Gyeongju World, a rental car is absolutely essential.

Gyeongju applies a surcharge to taxi fares, making a compact car rental a much more sensible and budget-friendly option.
If you plan to visit attractions beyond Hwanglidan-gil during your Gyeongju trip, I highly recommend booking your rental car in advance.

Why is a Rental Car Essential for a Gyeongju Trip?
🚍 Buses have long waiting times (inefficient for your schedule)
🚖 Taxis apply regional surcharges (inefficient for your wallet)

Gyeongju Station (A), Hwanglidan-gil (B), Bulguksa Temple (C)
Seokguram Grotto (D), Bomun Tourist Complex/Gyeongju World (E)
While the main tourist attractions might seem close on a map, the actual travel distances are quite significant.
Especially if you plan to visit Bulguksa Temple, Seokguram Grotto, and Gyeongju World, a rental car isn't an option, it's a necessity!
Gyeongju Station > Hwanglidan-gil | 15 mins / ~$10 |
Hwanglidan-gil > Bulguksa Temple | 20 mins / ~$13 |
Bulguksa Temple > Seokguram Grotto | 20 mins / ~$8 |
Seokguram Grotto > Hwanglidan-gil | 40 mins / ~$19 |

Gyeongju is known for its regional taxi surcharges; even a short ride from Gyeongju Station to Hwanglidan-gil can set you back around ~$10.
If you want to explore a variety of Gyeongju attractions like Bulguksa Temple, Seokguram Grotto, Bomun Tourist Complex, and Gyeongju World, renting a car will greatly enhance your experience.
