Gyeongju: So Much More Vibrant Than We Expected!
Honestly, when I thought of Gyeongju, I mostly pictured a historical textbook destination, perhaps a bit quiet or only for school trips. But after visiting again in May with my partner, it was a completely different experience! It has stunning nightscapes, trendy restaurants, and super clean hotels. I was amazed how much we could pack into just one night and two days. We put a lot of effort into planning this itinerary, and the result was pure satisfaction! 😊
DAY 1 Morning: Starting with Gyochon Hanok Village
Our first morning kicked off at Gyochon Hanok Village. If you go early, there aren't many people around, making it perfect for capturing those beautiful alleyway photos.

The sunlight streaming under the eaves created perfect photo opportunities.
There are also several Hanbok (traditional Korean dress) rental spots, and my girlfriend was definitely tempted! Strolling through the alleys when the morning air was still crisp was a truly delightful experience.

DAY 1 Afternoon & Evening: Daereungwon → Donggung Palace & Wolji Pond Night Views → Cheomseongdae Media Art
After lunch, we headed to Daereungwon Tomb Complex. There's free entry, and once you're inside, it's surprisingly vast. Walking among the rounded burial mounds, you get this uniquely serene feeling. It's just quiet and peaceful. Like all your complicated thoughts just melt away.

We timed our visit to Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond for sunset.

At night, the palace lights reflect perfectly on the pond's surface.
Seeing it in person after only viewing pictures, my jaw literally dropped. I let out a genuine, "Wow!" Seriously.

My girlfriend even said, "We HAVE to come back here just for photos!" It's definitely Gyeongju's top spot for breathtaking night views.
After soaking in the stunning night view at Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, we walked right over to Cheomseongdae Observatory. The two spots are so close, the walk was effortless.

The way the light dances across the ancient stone structure of Cheomseongdae is absolutely stunning. Even phone photos looked like works of art, so I couldn't stop snapping pictures.

We were already impressed by the night views at Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, but Cheomseongdae took it to another level! It gets even more beautiful as the night deepens, so don't go too early; I highly recommend timing your visit with the media art show. You won't regret it!
Accommodation: Hwaeun Hotel near Bulguksa, Surprisingly Clean and Modern
We chose Hwaeun Hotel near Bulguksa Temple for our stay. During our visit in May 2026, we managed to snag a great deal thanks to an accommodation festival, making our stay quite affordable (around ~$38 per night!).

Upon checking in and entering our room, we were pleasantly surprised by how clean and tidy it was. It felt well-maintained and minimalist.

And get this – they even mentioned that a swimming pool operates during the summer season! If we come back in the summer, we'll definitely have to try it out. 😄

Restaurant: Ryomi – Japanese Soup Curry in Gyeongju? A Brilliant Choice!
📍 Ryomi
1058-1 Poseok-ro, Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do
For our meal, we headed to Ryomi. Japanese food in Gyeongju? I was a little skeptical at first, but it turned out to be a brilliant choice.

We ordered the couple's set, which included Sapporo-style Soup Curry + Gogi Onsoba (warm meat soba) + a 5-piece Futomaki roll. When the soup curry arrived, a rich, deep aroma instantly filled the air.
One spoonful was all it took for me to realize, "This is the real deal." It had a curry base but wasn't thick or heavy; it was a delightfully slurpable, broth-like style.

The Gogi Onsoba also had tender, flavorful meat and a rich broth that kept us coming back for more.

The Futomaki rolls were generously thick-cut, making each bite incredibly satisfying.

DAY 2: Bulguksa Temple → National Gyeongju Museum to Conclude
📍 National Gyeongju Museum
186 Iljeong-ro, Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do
On our second day, after checking out, we headed straight to Bulguksa Temple. Our hotel was conveniently located nearby, making the commute incredibly easy. Visiting early in the morning meant fewer crowds, allowing us to explore in peaceful tranquility.

Walking past Seokgatap Pagoda, its scale felt much grander than I'd imagined. It truly hit me, "This isn't just a picture from a history book." It's truly remarkable and a bit mystical how a place over a thousand years old remains so peacefully preserved.

After exploring Bulguksa, we immediately moved on to the National Gyeongju Museum.
Honestly, I thought a museum might be a bit dull. But once we stepped inside, the sheer scale of the place was incredible. The outdoor area is expansive, and there are multiple buildings, so just walking around takes quite a bit of time.

Seeing the Silla golden crown right before my eyes was an entirely different experience from just seeing it in a textbook. And because we'd already seen the historical context of the artifacts at Bulguksa, the museum exhibits resonated even more deeply.

This place would be fantastic for families with kids. The spaces are wide, and the outdoor areas are pleasant for running around, allowing children to learn history naturally by seeing the artifacts firsthand.
It's a genuine must-do, especially for families traveling with children. Plus, admission is free, making it a perfect, stress-free way to wrap up your trip. Definitely keep it in mind!

Q2. What's the best time to visit Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond for night views?

Overall Review
Gyeongju truly is a much more vibrant and packed travel destination than I expected. The night views (Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, Cheomseongdae Media Art) far exceeded our expectations, and Ryomi's soup curry definitely earned a spot on our 'revisit' list.
Hwaeun Hotel, with its location near Bulguksa and clean facilities, definitely got our stamp of approval for value. Even better if you can catch an accommodation deal!
My only minor drawback? The itinerary can feel a little packed. If you prefer a more relaxed pace, a 3-day, 2-night trip might be even better.
If you're a first-timer to Gyeongju or looking for a fantastic couple's destination, I truly recommend this trip! You won't be disappointed! 🙏
