Today, I'm thrilled to introduce you to one of my absolute favorite spots in Gyesan-dong, a place I've visited countless times: Gukmin Jeongseo Main Branch, also renowned as a fantastic pub near Gyeongin National University of Education Station.

How to Make a Reservation

You can easily make reservations for Gukmin Jeongseo by phone. This spot is particularly popular among those seeking a great meal or drink near Gyeongin National University of Education, especially when the weather is pleasant, as they open their folding doors to create a lively outdoor patio atmosphere.

Exterior / Interior

This Gyeongin National University of Education restaurant boasts excellent accessibility, located within a ~0.2-mile (5-minute) walk from Exit 3 of Gyeongin National University of Education Station. You can't miss its bright green sign at the entrance of the alley.

Inside, you'll find a cozy space with about six tables. The nostalgic decor, paired with 90s and early 2000s Korean pop music playing in the background, creates a warm and inviting atmosphere.

The traditional mother-of-pearl inlay tables might even evoke a feeling of visiting your grandma's house. Each table comes pre-set with tissues, small plates, water cups, chopsticks, tongs, scissors, and a menu.

Menu & My Order

Gukmin Jeongseo Main Branch's signature dish is the Jeollado Aged Kimchi Jjigae. They also offer a variety of other delicious anju (drinking snacks) and alcoholic beverages, making it a perfect spot to enjoy both a meal and drinks.

My Order:

Review

Upon ordering, they bring out refreshing barley tea served in a retro Del Monte bottle and a nostalgic Korean snack called Kkoedori. After a short wait, the kimchi jjigae arrives! The visuals alone are incredible, aren't they?

This kimchi jjigae is made with kimchi aged in Gwangju, Jeollado province, and premium Boseong green pork shoulder, resulting in a rich and deep flavor. It's a dish I almost always order whenever I visit.

Each table has a burner, so you can keep your stew warm until the very last bite, and for ~$15, the portion size is incredibly generous.

As a special treat, they served us an egg jeon (Korean savory pancake) as a complimentary "Gukmin Jeongshik," which is actually their Chipotle Egg Jeon available as an additional menu item. This large, perfectly grilled egg jeon is topped with a generous amount of sauce – it's both savory and spicy, a truly unique and delicious side!

Taking a spoonful of the tender kimchi jjigae with soft tofu and meat is an absolute delight. The combination of the spicy and sour aged kimchi with the creamy soft tofu is simply divine.

We also added the Nostalgic Sugar Tomatoes to our order! For just ~$4, you get a plate piled high with them, offering fantastic value for money.

On another visit, I tried their Ox Bone Pollack Hangover Soup. I've also had their Chicken Soup and Sulguk (drinking soup), and all of them are perfect for both enjoying a drink and curing a hangover, making this a top-notch pub in Gyesan-dong.
