Wandering along the picturesque Gangmun Beach (강문해변), I decided to pop into the first inviting restaurant I saw. That's how I stumbled upon Gossi-ne Donghae Makguksu (고씨네 동해막국수)! I'm not usually a huge fan of makguksu (buckwheat noodles), but something about it just called to me that day.

Location

Interestingly, while the name suggests 'Donghae' (East Sea), Gossi-ne Donghae Makguksu is actually located in Gangneung (강릉) at Gangmun Beach (강문해변)! Don't let the name confuse you.

Here's some helpful parking information for your visit:
Gangmun Beach Public Parking Lots 1 & 2: Enjoy 1 hour and 30 minutes of free parking.
- Public Parking Lot 1: Right in front of the restaurant, directly on Gangmun Beach.
- Public Parking Lot 2: Located on the road behind the restaurant, next to Gangmun Bridge. If Lot 1 is full, this lot offers 24-hour free parking.
Street Parking: Available on Changhaero361-9 (창해로361-9), across from Dana Fish Grill (단아생선구이) / Hwangje Galbi (황제갈비) (behind Eiffel Lua).
- 263 Gangmun-dong, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do (강원 강릉시 강문동 263) - Gyeongpo Lake (경포호수) Square Parking Lot.

While makguksu is in the name, it actually seems like the main stars here are the Perilla Seed Sundubu Kalguksu (들깨순칼) and the Spicy Sundubu Kalguksu (얼큰순칼).

The walls are adorned with photos of famous Korean celebrities who have visited, and they also sell Bongpyeong Buckwheat Noodles, 'Manneung Kkamakjang' (all-purpose black sauce), 'Kkamakjang Ssamjang' (black sauce for wraps), and buckwheat tea. I'm familiar with doenjang (fermented soybean paste), but 'Manneung Kkamakjang' was new to me and quite intriguing! It's said to be versatile enough to make doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), ssamjang (dipping sauce for wraps), and bibimjang (mixing sauce), truly living up to its 'all-purpose' name.
Interior

The interior is clean and thoughtfully arranged. You'll find a good mix of two-person and four-person tables, showing consideration for both solo diners and small groups. There's ample seating, which is always a plus!

Many restaurants along Gangmun Beach feature expansive, floor-to-ceiling windows facing the sea, offering breathtaking ocean views. These popular window seats can be hard to snag, but they're worth it if you can!
Menu

Let's take a look at the menu. The 1-person set menu immediately caught my eye, and I decided on it in a second! The Water Makguksu (물막국수), Perilla Oil Makguksu (들기름막국수), Bibim Makguksu (비빔막국수), Spicy Sundubu Kalguksu (얼큰순두부칼국수), Perilla Seed Sundubu Kalguksu (들깨순두부칼국수), and Spicy Sundubu (얼큰순두부) are all popular choices. Looking back now, I almost wish I had tried the Spicy Sundubu Kalguksu instead!

What's truly unique is the wide variety of makgeolli (Korean rice wine) available here! They offer flavors like rice, corn, pumpkin, buckwheat, and even omija (five-flavor berry)! If you're a fan of makgeolli, you'll love choosing your favorite. Another reason Gossi-ne Donghae Makguksu is so popular is their sushi-like rolls – a delightful surprise!

The 1-person set menu costs ₩20,000 (~$15). While the price might seem a bit steep at first, ordering two separate dishes would easily exceed that. Considering it's a popular tourist spot, I think it's a reasonable price. I was looking forward to having Bibim Makguksu again after a long time, and the suyuk (boiled pork slices) was also quite good.

One thing I really appreciated about the makguksu was how consistently moist the noodles were. Sometimes, if the sauce is lacking or too dry, the noodles can get sticky while you're eating. But these stayed perfectly tender and slid down easily. It had just the right amount of kick, so even if you're not big on spicy food, you could definitely give it a try.

The suyuk was also incredibly tender and moist, pairing wonderfully with the makguksu. Seven slices might seem a little small, but when eaten together with the noodles, it was perfectly satisfying.

While the sign says 'Donghae Makguksu', I highly recommend trying one of their piping hot sundubu kalguksu (soft tofu noodle soup) or other hot pot dishes, especially as the weather gets cooler. They're perfect for a comforting meal!
