Gongju Day Trip Itinerary 2026: History, Culture & Local Eats

After moving to Sejong, my husband and I embarked on our very first weekend adventure: a spontaneous day trip to nearby Gongju!

Honestly, we didn't have a grand plan to see every famous spot in Gongju that day.

Instead, we took it easy. After exploring one place, we'd simply ask ourselves, "Where to next?" and decide our next destination on the spot. It was a wonderfully relaxed approach!

Looking back, for a first-time visitor to Gongju, this was a perfectly manageable half-day itinerary, offering a fantastic blend of history and delicious local food. All four locations were easily accessible by car, and parking was convenient, making this a great route for anyone planning a road trip to Gongju.

We started with lunch, then explored the museum and royal tomb, finishing our day by enjoying coffee and street food at the market. This wasn't about rushing through every famous tourist spot; it was more about a relaxed, half-day immersion into Gongju's charm.

Our first stop was Saeihak Garden. This wasn't a pre-planned restaurant; we simply drove by and the sign proudly proclaiming "70-Year Tradition Gongju Gukbap" caught our eye, so we decided to give it a try on a whim!

The flavor was a bit different from the spicy, rich gukbap I had imagined; it was closer to a cross between Yukgaejang (spicy beef soup) and Seogogi Muguk (clear beef radish soup). While it wasn't quite what I expected, it was memorable as my first taste of Gongju Gukbap in Gongju itself!

After lunch, around 1:00 PM, we made our way to the Gongju National Museum.

We spent about an hour and a half here, admiring various artifacts excavated from Muryeong Royal Tomb, including the adorable Jinmyosu (guardian animal statue).

When I visited, it was during Baekje Cultural Heritage Week, and the Gongju National Museum was hosting a variety of events. I learned that some events, like the "You Quiz GoGo" and special exhibitions such as "<Gyeryongsan, Korea's Sacred Mountain>", continue to run. If you're planning a visit in September 2026, it's worth checking their schedule for any ongoing activities!

It was fascinating to explore the artifacts one by one, but seeing the relics from Muryeong Royal Tomb sparked a desire to see the actual excavation site itself.

So, after finishing our museum visit, we headed to our next destination: Muryeong Royal Tomb.

Muryeong Royal Tomb: A Perfect Companion to the Museum

After exploring the Gongju National Museum, we moved on to Muryeong Royal Tomb around 2:30 PM.

The two sites are quite close, so you can easily walk between them or take a short drive – either way is convenient.

We explored the recreated interior of Muryeong Royal Tomb at the Royal Tomb Exhibition Hall and then took a leisurely stroll around the Muryeong Royal Tomb and Royal Tombs Park area.

It was truly fascinating to see the actual tomb where the artifacts we had just seen in the museum were discovered. The continuity made the history come alive!

Visiting the museum first to see the artifacts, then immediately heading to their original excavation site, made the experience much more vivid and memorable than if we had visited them separately. That's why I highly recommend combining the Gongju National Museum and Muryeong Royal Tomb into one cohesive itinerary when planning your Gongju day trip.

Gongju Sanseong Market: Jinmyosu Bread & Local Delights

After all the history at the museum and royal tomb, we wanted a more relaxed final stop. So, we headed to Gongju Sanseong Market.

This wasn't part of our initial plan either, but we spontaneously decided to visit after learning that Yosae Cafe in Sanseong Market sold Jinmyosu bread! It was incredibly cute to see the Jinmyosu, which we'd just seen as an ancient artifact, reimagined as a delightful pastry.

The Jinmyosu bread was so tasty that I even bought it again on a subsequent trip to Gongju!

After our cafe stop, we picked up some delicious treats from Dan Gol Dakgangjeong and Kkosomi Jijimi.

The Kkosomi Jijimi Yukjeon Mari, in particular, was so good that as soon as I tasted it back home, I instantly regretted not buying an extra roll! When I visited Gongju again recently, I wanted to get more, but there were too many people, so I had to give up. That's how delicious it was – good enough to crave a second time!

This entire trip was completely spontaneous from start to finish. However, looking back, the flow was surprisingly perfect: starting with lunch, then immersing ourselves in Gongju's rich history at the museum and royal tomb, and finally indulging in market treats. It was an ideal itinerary.
