If you're exploring Gongju (공주) and craving a unique chestnut dessert experience, then Bameu (바므), a charming hanok cafe, is an absolute must-visit!
I visited Bameu during the Gongju National Heritage Night Festival, and let me tell you, both their chestnut ice cream and tiramisu were incredibly delicious.
The tiramisu, in particular, was so memorable that I'm already dreaming of having it again on my next trip to Gongju.

Just a heads-up: when I visited on a weekend afternoon, there was quite a crowd, and we had to wait for about 30 minutes.
However, the good news is that you can easily pass the time by taking a leisurely stroll along the nearby Jemincheon Stream. This makes Bameu a fantastic addition to your Gongju itinerary, even with a potential wait.
Navigating the Wait at Bameu Cafe

When we arrived at Bameu, there was already a considerable number of people waiting.
My partner and I registered for the waitlist and then explored the charming area around Jemincheon Stream.

It was quite a warm day when we visited, so we even dipped our feet in the Jemincheon Stream to cool off and relax! After about 30 minutes of enjoying the surroundings, we were finally called in.

If you plan to dine in at Bameu, you'll need to register on their waitlist and await your turn to be called. Once your name is called, you first secure a table on the second floor, then head back down to the first floor to place your order.
A helpful tip: if you're in a rush, you can order takeout immediately without joining the waitlist. Personally, I found the waiting system a bit disorganized. It didn't feel very systematically managed. For instance, during our visit, there was a bit of a commotion because someone who hadn't been called managed to grab a seat and order before those who had been properly summoned. This meant someone whose turn it actually was couldn't get in right away.
Bameu Menu Recommendations: Chestnut Ice Cream & Tiramisu

We ordered two Iced Americanos, the Gongju Chestnut Mascarpone Tiramisu, and the Boni Chestnut Topping Chestnut Ice Cream (Noir). As Bameu is renowned for its Gongju chestnut desserts, these two treats were what I was most excited to try!

The first dessert we dove into was the Boni Chestnut Topping Chestnut Ice Cream.

The chestnut ice cream itself wasn't overly sweet, and the accompanying boni chestnuts were delightfully chewy and subtly sweet, making for a perfect combination.

However, what truly stood out and left a lasting impression was the buckwheat tuile! While the ice cream was delicious on its own, pairing it with the crispy buckwheat tuile created an especially wonderful flavor and texture experience.

But if I had to pick a favorite, the Gongju Chestnut Mascarpone Tiramisu stole the show!

The tiramisu wasn't excessively sweet, which I appreciated, and the cocoa blended perfectly with the rich chestnut flavor. It was truly delicious. Between the two, the tiramisu was more to my personal taste. If you can only choose one, I highly recommend the tiramisu!
Bameu: A Charming Hanok Cafe in Gongju

Beyond its delectable desserts, Bameu also captivated me with its enchanting hanok (traditional Korean house) ambiance. The views of the mountains and surrounding village from the windows made it a wonderfully serene spot to relax and savor our treats.

My only minor critique? The background music felt a little out of place. The space itself exuded traditional Korean charm, but the soundtrack was more akin to something you'd hear at an Aladdin theme park! While musical tastes are subjective, I think music more fitting for a hanok setting would have enhanced the overall experience.

All in all, Bameu is a highly recommended cafe for anyone visiting Gongju and looking to savor some exquisite chestnut desserts. Just remember that there might be a wait, so if your schedule is tight, it's wise to factor in potential waiting times. Grabbing your order to-go is always a convenient option!
