An Adventure in Gangneung, Gangwon-do!
Your Must-Visit Spots for July & August in Gangneung
A Perfect 2-Day 1-Night Itinerary

If you're planning your summer getaway for July or August
and looking for amazing places to visit in Gangneung,
then follow this 2-day, 1-night itinerary exactly!
During peak summer vacation,
just hitting the beach for a swim feels a little incomplete, doesn't it?!
This itinerary lets you enjoy delicious eateries, charming cafes, ocean-view hotels, and vibrant market food all at once.
It's truly the perfect route for anyone visiting Gangneung for the very first time!

This itinerary was thoughtfully crafted to let you savor delicious eateries, cozy cafes, a luxurious hotel stay (known as 'hocance' in Korea!), delightful strolls, and vibrant markets, all while minimizing travel time.
First off, with minimal driving, the trip itself felt incredibly comfortable and relaxing!
Especially for a July or August trip to Gangneung, which is a bustling season,
it's far more crucial to naturally connect your destinations rather than trying to squeeze in too many places!
📌 DAY 1
① Kick off your trip at Gamjajeok 1 Beonji |

📍 Gamjajeok 1 Beonji
2nd Floor, 7 Gonghang-gil 29beon-gil, Gangneung-si, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province
The very first place we visited upon arriving in Gangneung was
Gamjajeok 1 Beonji!
There's almost always a wait during lunchtime,
so I highly recommend visiting early, before the lunch rush!
You can even do remote Catchtable reservations, so
we joined the virtual queue before we even arrived.
We ordered Gamja Ongsimi (potato dumpling soup), Dotori Deulkkae Sujebi (acorn dough flakes in perilla seed soup),
and Gamjajeon (potato pancake)!

There's nothing quite like Gangwon-do potatoes! These dishes were the perfect way to kick off our Gangneung adventure,
and it's a wonderful spot for families, especially if you're traveling with your parents.
② For Cafe Toetmaru, I recommend going as early as possible! |

📍 Cafe Toetmaru
232 Nanseolheon-ro, Gangneung-si, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province
When you think of cafes in Gangneung,
Toetmaru is definitely the most talked-about spot!

Its signature Black Sesame Coffee is wonderfully nutty and rich,
a must-try for any coffee lover!
This place is infamous for its long queues, but
since we visited on a weekday, we only waited about 20 minutes!
③ The Highlight of This Trip: Shilla Monogram Gangneung |

📍 Shilla Monogram Gangneung
210 Haean-ro, Gangneung-si, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province
The place I was most satisfied with on this trip was,
without a doubt, Shilla Monogram Gangneung!
The moment we opened the room door,
the ocean view through the floor-to-ceiling windows was truly breathtaking,
and as a new hotel, the room condition was simply immaculate!

The bedding was comfortable and the room was quiet, allowing for a truly relaxing 'hocance' (hotel vacation).
Especially when traveling to Gangneung in July or August,
with the hot weather and crowds, it's absolutely essential to schedule some rest time back at your accommodation.

That's why including an ocean-view hotel mid-itinerary turned out to be much more satisfying than I even expected.
As the vacation season approaches,
room prices will surely go up,
so if you're planning your summer getaway,
booking in advance is absolutely your best bet!

④ After Check-in: A Walk at Gyeongpo Gasiyeon Wetlands |
Honestly, our main goal as a couple is a food tour, but
we still need to give ourselves some time to digest, right?
After a short break in our room,
we headed to Gyeongpo Gasiyeon Wetlands!
📍 Gyeongpo Gasiyeon Wetlands
643 Unjeong-dong, Gangneung-si, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province

Gyeongpo Gasiyeon Wetlands might not be
extraordinary, but
it offers a peaceful walking course along Gyeongpo Lake,
making it much more satisfying than we expected.

The walking paths are well-maintained,
and it wasn't crowded,
making it a beautiful spot for photos.
Best of all, it's absolutely free!
⑤ Evening: Food Tour at Gangneung Jungang Market |
In the evening, we headed to Gangneung Jungang Market!

📍 Jungang Market
21 Geumseong-ro, Gangneung-si, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province
Inside the market, there's so much to see, like Dakgangjeong (sweet and sour crispy chicken), fresh raw fish (hoe), and Ojingeo Sundae (squid sausage),
making it a perfect spot to explore while grabbing dinner.

Can you really visit Gangneung without exploring its market? You'd be missing out, wouldn't you?

We picked up some fresh raw fish from the underground fish center,
and enjoyed it back at our accommodation while gazing at the sea.
It was absolutely delicious!
📌DAY 2
⑥ Start Your Day Leisurely with Shilla Monogram Breakfast |
The next morning, it was hotel breakfast time!
I heard so many good things about the breakfast at Shilla Monogram Gangneung,
so we specifically signed up for it.

The variety of food was incredible,
and the omelets and bakery items were especially outstanding.
We stuffed ourselves silly right from the morning, haha!
During hot seasons like July and August,
instead of rushing around early in the morning,
it would be great to enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your accommodation,
then head for a swim.
⑦ Le Bon Mazel: A Charming Lifestyle Shop |
The first place we visited after checking out was
Le Bon Mazel!
📍 Le Bon Mazel Lifestyle Shop
16 Imyeong-ro 180beon-gil, Gangneung-si, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province

Seriously, I wanted to buy every single plate and dish,
it was so hard to resist...

It felt like being in Europe,
so instead of rushing around on the last day of our trip,
it was perfect for a relaxed browse and a little break.
⑧ Laidback: Crafted with Artisan Spirit |
Next, we headed to Laidback.
📍 Laidback
1st Floor, 38 Namgu-gil 30beon-gil, Gangneung-si, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, laidback coffee house

Sipping a cup of coffee,
this cafe was perfect for reflecting on the trip.

While there are many famous large cafes, including Terarosa,
I specifically sought out Laid Back because of its famous hand-drip coffee,
and I was absolutely delighted!
The owner brews each cup with incredible care and precision.
And the taste? Absolutely delicious, as expected!!!
It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a moment of tranquility before your trip ends!
⑨ Lastellina: Highly Recommended for Takeaway Baked Goods! |
If you're a true bread lover (or 'ppang-soon-ee' / 'ppang-dol-ee' as we say in Korea),
Lastellina is an absolute must-visit!!
📍 Lastellina
282 Gangneung-daero, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-special Self-Governing Province, 1st Floor, Lastellina

Honestly, I bought Lastellina's treats on my first day
and enjoyed them at my accommodation for two days.

But if you pack up some baked goods on your last day,
you can keep the lingering memories of your Gangneung trip alive
even after you return home – which would be even better!
This place also sells out if you go too late,
so an 'open run' (being there right at opening) is a must!!
One-Line Summary
If you're looking for places to visit in Gangneung during July or August,
I highly recommend following a route similar to mine,
linking together fantastic eateries, cafes, accommodations, scenic walks, and markets
in a convenient and efficient itinerary!!
It didn't feel like I crammed too much into one day;
even for a 2-day, 1-night trip, it felt incredibly fulfilling.
Even if I visit Gangneung again in the future,
I'd probably choose a very similar itinerary!

Gamjajeok 1beonji tends to have long waits during lunchtime, so it's best to visit early before lunch. You can use Catchtable's remote queuing service before arriving for a more convenient experience.
Toetmaru is famous for its notoriously long wait times. According to an article, visitors on a weekday waited for about 20 minutes.
At Shilla Monogram Gangneung, the ocean view through the large window immediately upon opening the room door was impressive, and as a newly built hotel, the room condition was spotless. The high satisfaction was due to needing time to relax at the accommodation during hot weather like in July and August.
If you plan to buy baked goods from La Stellina, an "open run" (arriving right when they open) is essential, as they might sell out if you go late. Taking the baked goods home allows you to prolong the lingering feeling of your Gangneung trip even after returning.
