If you're looking for the perfect family-friendly spot in Gangneung that won't break the bank,
you need to add Solhyang Arboretum to your itinerary.
It's quickly becoming known as one of the best free hidden gems in the area!
Not only are admission and parking completely free,
but the arboretum also features beautifully maintained wooden boardwalks.
Filled with the refreshing scent of pine, these paths are completely stroller and wheelchair accessible.
When planning a trip to Gangneung, most people immediately think of the beach.
But this lush forest escape was such a pleasant surprise,
I'm already planning my next visit! 🤭

Located just a bit outside the bustling city center,
it's an easy drive and fits perfectly into a day trip itinerary.
For my perfect Gangneung day,
I spent the morning strolling around Gyeongpo Lake and the beach,
grabbed a delicious oceanfront lunch,
and headed to the arboretum for a relaxing afternoon.
Since there are no entrance or parking fees,
it's incredibly budget-friendly.
There are three spacious parking lots available,
though they do fill up quickly on weekend afternoons!
Remember that the park is closed on Mondays,
so double-check your calendar
before adding it to your Gangwon State itinerary.
The park also opens for special night viewings!
During summer, the evening hours run from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM,
and in winter, from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM.
I've heard the illuminated forest trails
create a stunning, magical atmosphere at night.
I definitely want to come back for the evening experience! 👀
Near the visitor center, you'll find clean restrooms
and a helpful information board.
I grabbed a physical map and planned out my route before starting.
Right past the entrance, you'll spot a green bus stop!
A free electric shuttle bus runs from here
all the way to the top of the arboretum.
It departs every 30 minutes,
but takes a short break during lunch hours,
so it's a good idea to check the schedule when you arrive.
For the way down, the bus leaves at 15 and 45 minutes past the hour.
It basically drops passengers off at the top
and immediately heads back down.
Keep in mind that you can't hop on or off in the middle of the route—
it's a direct ride all the way up or all the way down!
I chose the best of both worlds:
riding the bus to the top
and enjoying a leisurely walk back down!
The hike up can be a bit steep,
so catching a ride up and then strolling down
while snapping photos and taking breaks
is definitely the smartest way to explore. :)
Starting from the greenhouse at the very top,
I slowly made my way down through the botanical gardens,
the royal azalea garden, and the rock garden.
The descent took me about 40 to 60 minutes at a relaxed pace.
Taking the bus definitely saves you time and energy!
Stepping into the tropical greenhouse is a treat.
Filled with towering palm trees, creeping vines,
and massive broad-leaf plants,
it briefly feels like you've been transported out of Korea!
Honestly, even though everything is completely free,
the entire facility is so impeccably maintained.
It's a spot I'd gladly return to.
Because the paths are so well-paved,
a comfortable pair of sneakers is all you need.
It's a very easy walk, making it ideal for young children!
Most of the main trails are paved with asphalt,
so pushing a stroller is completely hassle-free. :)
I visited during early spring,
but now that we are well into the 2026 summer season,
the forest is incredibly vibrant, green, and full of blooming flowers! :)
Despite the zero-dollar price tag,
the breathtaking landscapes and pristine upkeep
made every step feel like a healing retreat. 🌿

Yes, the deck paths and asphalt roads within the arboretum are well-maintained, making it easy to move around with strollers and wheelchairs. In addition, both admission and parking are free, making it a great, budget-friendly destination for families.
You can board the bus at the green bus stop just past the entrance. It runs to the top every 30 minutes. Since you cannot get on or off in the middle of the route, we recommend taking the bus all the way to the top and then slowly walking down to enjoy the scenery.
During the summer season (March to October), it is open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM during the day, and from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM at night. During the winter season (November to February), the daytime hours are from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and the nighttime hours are from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. Please note that the arboretum is closed every Monday.
