Inside, the cozy atmosphere is created by mostly round tables. They operate with their folding doors wide open, allowing you to enjoy an al fresco dining experience, even with fans strategically placed throughout to keep things comfortably cool.

Menu & My Order

At Gaeko Makgeolli, all dishes are cooked fresh to order.

Their menu features a variety of bar snacks, including assorted Korean pancakes (jeon), spicy pollock stew (dongtae maeuntang), tofu kimchi, and chicken gizzards. You'll also find a selection of stir-fries and other stews.

My Review

After placing my order, the complimentary side dishes arrived: refreshing bean sprout salad and diced radish kimchi (kkakdugi).

Though simple, these appetizers were perfect for a light bite before our main dishes and drinks. The crunchy bean sprout salad, in particular, paired wonderfully with the spicy stew.

Soon after, a generous portion of spicy pollock stew (dongtae maeuntang) arrived in an aluminum pot. What I loved most was the ability to adjust the spice level! The broth was both spicy and incredibly refreshing, packed with ample pollock and roe – absolutely ideal for a drinking companion.

The pollock pieces were sizable, and the stew was overflowing with tofu and fresh minari (water dropwort), offering incredible value for the price. I honestly couldn't believe the generous quantity for just ~$12 – it's more than enough for several people to share!

While the stew was simmering, our assorted Korean pancakes (modum jeon) arrived. This platter was a feast for the eyes, featuring skewers, Korean blood sausage (sundae), king oyster mushrooms, kimchi pancakes, chili pepper pancakes, perilla leaf pancakes, meat patties (donggeurangttaeng), zucchini pancakes, tofu, and pollock pancakes – a truly diverse and abundant selection all on one plate.

The pancakes were freshly cooked, warm, and not overly greasy, making them enjoyable from start to finish. They paired perfectly with the tangy pickled onions served on the side.

The perilla leaf pancake (kkaennip jeon) was a personal highlight for me. It was generously filled, and the aromatic perilla leaves truly shined through, making it an incredibly satisfying bar snack.

With at least two pieces of each type of pancake, it’s easy for everyone in a group to try a little bit of everything.
