ETIAS Europe 2026: What It Is, Fees, & EES Differences

While compiling my Prague Airport Immigration Review, I also introduced EES.

If you've looked up European travel information, you might have also come across the name ETIAS, which can easily lead to confusion about whether the two systems are the same.

First, let me share the most important information upfront:

As of August 15, 2026, ETIAS has not yet been implemented, and applications are not currently being accepted.

The exact start date also hasn't been officially announced yet.

If you come across any websites claiming to accept applications now, it's best not to make a payment or enter your passport information immediately.

In this post, I'll break down what ETIAS is,

how it differs from EES,

and, based on official information, cover everything you need to know about applying once it's implemented, including fees and validity periods.

1. What Exactly is ETIAS?

ETIAS is an acronym for the European Travel Information and Authorisation System.

It's similar to the US ESTA; it's easiest to understand it as an electronic travel authorization that travelers from visa-exempt countries apply for online before departing for a short-term visit to Europe.

South Korea is also included in the list of eligible countries.

Once implemented, South Korean passport holders planning short-term visits to the 30 ETIAS-eligible countries will need to obtain this travel authorization in advance.

The applicable countries include the 29 Schengen states plus Cyprus; Ireland is not included.

It's important to remember that ETIAS is not a visa, nor does it automatically guarantee entry.

Even with a valid ETIAS, the final decision on entry rests with the border control officers upon arrival.

The maximum duration for short stays remains the same as before: up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

2. What's the Difference Between ETIAS and EES?

Although the names are similar, these two systems have different application timelines and roles.

Looking at the travel sequence, you'll first apply for ETIAS from home, and then, upon arrival in Europe, you'll go through the EES procedures at the airport or border.

3. How to Apply for ETIAS and Its Fees

Once implemented, you'll be able to apply through the official EU ETIAS website or its official mobile app.

The application form is expected to include personal details like your name and date of birth, passport information, contact details, education and occupation details, as well as questions about any criminal history or visits to conflict zones.

The fee is 20 Euros.

Applicants under 18 and over 70 years old are exempt from the fee, but it's important to note that they are not exempt from applying for ETIAS itself.

Family members of EU citizens or those with free movement rights within the EU may also be exempt from the fee under specific conditions.

Most applications are processed within minutes, but it can take up to 96 hours at the latest.

If additional documents or an interview are required, the final decision could take even longer. Therefore, once your travel plans are firm, it's safer to apply well in advance, rather than right before your trip.

4. Validity Period and Pre-Boarding Check

An approved ETIAS is valid for up to 3 years or until the expiration date of the passport used for the application, whichever comes first.

You can use it multiple times within its validity period, but if you obtain a new passport, your existing ETIAS cannot be transferred, so you'll need to apply again with the new passport.

ETIAS is electronically linked to your passport information.

Airlines, shipping companies, and international bus operators can verify electronically whether you have a valid travel authorization before boarding.

While a printout isn't mandatory, it's a good idea to keep your approval email and application number until your trip concludes.

If the name and passport number you entered during the application differ from those on your actual passport, you could be denied boarding or entry. So, always double-check your personal information once you receive the approval email.

5. Implementation Timeline and Transition Period

While some EU documents previously indicated that ETIAS would start in Q4 2026, the official ETIAS application portal currently does not provide a confirmed specific implementation date.

The EU has stated that it will announce the start date several months in advance, and currently, the application form is not yet available.

Therefore, instead of definitively stating 'confirmed implementation by late 2026,' it's more accurate to say that we are currently at the stage of awaiting the official announcement of the implementation date.

Once the system begins, a transition period of at least 6 months is planned.

During this period, applying for ETIAS is recommended, but entry will not be denied solely for the lack of an ETIAS, provided all other entry requirements are met.

Following this, a further grace period of at least 6 months will continue, and exceptions may apply to travelers making their first entry after the transition period ends.

The actual application dates and detailed operational procedures will need to be reconfirmed after the implementation date is announced.

6. Beware of Unofficial Application Websites!

Even though ETIAS is not currently accepting applications, you might come across pages in your search results that mimic the official website.

The official EU information address is europa.eu/etias, and there's no reason to pay an application fee or enter your passport or card details before actual applications open.

While it's not legally prohibited to use official agencies, they might charge additional fees, and you'll have to hand over sensitive personal information.

If possible, it's safest to use the official EU website or app directly.

To summarize, ETIAS isn't an immigration check that happens upon arrival in Europe; it's a pre-travel authorization obtained online before your trip.

It's not yet in the application phase, so there's nothing you need to prepare right now. Once the implementation date is officially announced, you can apply after checking your travel dates and passport validity.
